TEST DRIVE MEME: SEPTEMBER

Welcome to the Ryslig Test Drive Meme! Below are a few prompts to get you started, but you may make up any prompt you desire! Please take a look at the navigation page for rules, setting information, and links to reserves and apps. Have fun!

SCENARIO ONE

You wake up on the beach thoroughly drenched with your mouth full of sand. The salt water causes various cuts and scrapes on your skin to sting and the sand isn't helping. The air is slightly humid, ruining any feeling of refreshment you might have gotten from your dip in the ocean. There are lights in the distance but the unfriendly scent of gunpowder fills the air. If you're lucky, you're alone. If not, you might find yourself staring up into a pair of monstrous eyes or down the barrel of a local's shotgun.

SCENARIO TWO

So you've just arrived, and already SOME the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous people who had them saying they are lies, or pointing out good "jokes." Then there's the people who aren't happy to see you at all. Glares and silent, judging stares if you're lucky. Torches and pitchforks attempting to drive you out of the town if you're not. You may need a friend to help you.

SCENARIO THREE

"Seek us out," the voice whispers in your head, and before you have time to question it you've found yourself in someplace entirely alien. Maybe it's the Fog God's ghostly town of Dyster, where exultant followers dance around bonfires and sing their praises to the skies above. Maybe it's the Fourth God's arcade, with small robots wheeling about amidst the lights and colors of old pinball machines. Only one thing is certain: you are not alone, in this sacred place.

SCENARIO FOUR

The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

[ When you come from a future where plants and animals are extinct, you don't expect to come face to face with so much nature all at once. This might not be the first time he's nearly drowned, because the sea still exists, but that time he'd been saved thanks to a block of ice he had passed out on. Sand wasn't what he expected.

He coughs, and can suddenly hear the click of a gun's safety being removed. He stares up, right into the barrel. ]

I swear, I din't take any pictures of ya, don' shoot me!

[ That's usually why people try to kill him (not the only reason buuut). ]

[ He's freaking out. He's very much freaking out right now. Trees? Flowers? Grass? Animals? What the heck is this talk about dealing with becoming a monster?

And here's this weirdo getting freaked out by regular flowers when he stumbles and falls face first into someone's flowerbed. ]

Ah! Git off git off I can'-- flowers aren'-- why would ya have somethin' so dangerous like this--

[ And then there's the issue of food. He stares suspiciously at the food that looks like it would come out of some food history pdf.

It's perfectly normal food, but... ]

How- how do I know is safe to eat this...?

[ Shiiiiit shit shit shit.

He had heard about this 'turning into monsters' thing, but he hadn't been able to really believe it. It's a bit hard to grasp after all.

But now? He's turning into something, and he has no idea what it is. It's a nymph, but he doesn't know what that is, really. What he knows is that he's growing flowers. And that's the worst possible thing that could ever happen, what with the only flower in his world that exists is the Shinigami flower; a parasite that kills its host and transforms them into something that spreads death and pollution. ]

No no no, this can' be happenin', I can' become Shinigami, I'm not a doctor, I'm gunna die--

[ It totally is weird to find all of these plants and animals just everywhere, and at first Kanata was freaking out to - it was only natural - but then he realized that none of the plants actually was the Shinigami, and now he needs to tell his distressed senpai about it, since he's spotted him.

So he plops down into a crouch, and picks one of the flowers off of Ayumu, and holds it in front of the older man's face. ]

Senpai, senpai, it's fine, this ain't the shinigami. Look, it looks like the illustration I saw of what the ajisai wagashi was inspired by. It's a hydrangea, Kajiwara-han.

[ He's a doctor, trust him; he's seen lots of Shinigami flowers. And he loves wagashi, and knows a fair share about them, even the ones that he's been unable to eat. ]

[ He might not know this particular doctor as well as he knows Souma, but he certainly knows him to some degree. He does trust him to know if it's a shinigami though, as he's a doctor and he really respects their work (and then there's that dumbass who's his close friend). ]

Ugh.

[ He relaxes again, falling back on the grass. ]

'tis weird to see these thin's in real life.

[ Kanata had been tasked with fetching Ichinose-senpai and Kajiwara-han after he purposefully let them go after all. He'd hope that he at least knew his face even if he didn't know his name. He didn't know Kajiwara's name until very recently either anyway, just that he was from PR. ]

I know, it's super weird. But they're also really pretty, don't ya think?

[ He spins the stem slowly between his fingers. ]

I haven't seen any Shinigami this far by the way, if I do I'll let you and everyone know. Ah, I haven't seen any other Doctors either.

[ Please, don't underestimate the PR department. He knows all the names of the doctors. Especially those who joined Gokurakuen way after he did. It was pretty unavoidable to know his face after all that's happened recently. ]

Yah, I haven't looked at'em tha' much yet.

[ He picks another flower to look at it more closely. ]

Me eitha, 've seen lotsa creature's tha' def'nitely got somethin' weird goin' on with'em.

[Sand. Salt. It clings to his cheek as he lifts his face from the bank and spits, as he coughs with some fraction of his usual might. His body aches all over and the air stings scratches he didn't even know he had.

Nekomaru freezes, then pushes himself to his feet in one mad scramble. His geta sink into the sand, but it's nothing he's not used to. Nothing is what he's not used to. He stares at his callused, thick, battle-scarred hands.

He's human again.

Never mind that this beach lacks Jabberwock Island's refreshing breeze. Never mind the smell of saltpeter or the complaints of his weary, abraded body. Never mind his last memories of where he ought to be.

Like the unstoppable rise of the sun, the smile breaks across Nekomaru's face, widens, brightens, and then breaks into full, booming laughter. He clenches his fists and roars to the distant sky.]

Gwaaaaaaaahahahahaha! Take that, Monokuma! Nidai Nekomaru HAS RETURRRRRNEDDD FROM HELLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

[He pauses to think about it, then pumps both fists high above his head.]

...AGAIN!

Ngh...Gnnnggh...

[Apparently unaware of the passersby swerving to give his groaning a wide berth, Nekomaru paces up and down one of Vandare's piers, nose buried in a pamphlet someone handed him. Normally, one might expect him to be running for the nearest bathroom, but for once, Nekomaru's bowels aren't foremost on his mind. He shakes his head and smacks the pamphlet with the back of his hand.]

These people...do they have any idea what they're doing? No, this is no good at all...! Who do they think they're kidding with THIS SHIT?!

[He holds the pamphlet up in his shaking fist, then sighs and returns to studying its contents, scarred brow deeply furrowed.]

This diet...no one would receive the nutrients they need from a single food group, let alone high schoolers still completing their final stages of growth...Rrrrgh, what fools...

[...Oh. Looks like he's reading "Alternatives to Human Flesh."

Charming.]

1 SLAMS INTO but gently

[That was a voice he knew. The recognition was immediate, more immediate than the voice of any other classmate for him. And it hits him so hard, he doesn't fully process what the man says at first. He just freezes, turning from his spot a ways away to stare in Nekomaru's direction.

Ah, but wait-- "Returned from hell again."

Of course he would have a much brighter outlook on arriving in a place like this than he had. Where he thought he'd surely arrived at Hell's door, his classmate saw it as the complete opposite. Somehow...that makes this situation a little easier. It's still difficult and somewhat jarring, with a lingering feeling of guilt, but...

Is this similar to how Fuyuhiko felt, coming face to face with Mahiru for the first time? (And, maybe, the second time as well?) No sense in hanging back, he guesses...they'd meet eventually anyway. Don't mind his appearance too much. He's still the same chuuni loser you know. Mostly.]

Kehehe...so even you have arrived on this plane of existence now, have you?

[That voice--that's the last voice he heard, before waking upside-down in that unfathomable death trap. And even that can't diminish Nidai's joy. It only takes it in a different direction.

He turns toward Gundam as well, lowering his arms so he can crack his knuckles.]

Tanaka! It's good to see you! I hope you're doing well, because we have yet to finish our fi--

[Oh. Okay, wait. That's...different. That's, uh, not exactly what he expected! He stares at Gundam's impressive wingspan for a moment, then jumps back in the sand, eyes wide.]

UWAAAHHHH?! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUUUU?!?

[If it were most other classmates, he'd be trying to reassure them right now. His form is nothing, don't worry about it. But with the manager, especially after he was clearly about to suggest finishing the battle he'd had to cut short before, he can't help but let his ego show a little.]

Fuahahahaha! Are you impressed, fiend? Scared? I should hope it would be the former rather than the latter, as it would not sit well with me to battle a foe who finds himself quivering at the mere sight of my power.

[Wait-- No, he shouldn't be thinking about fighting right now. He raises a hand in more of a greeting and non-threatening gesture, to show he has no intention of actually following through on the idea of challenging him. At least not yet, anyway.]

The overseer of this land - the despicable woman who brought us both here - has deemed it necessary to reveal my true form. Those that arrive here thanks to her powers are soon transformed into beasts of legend. That is the short explanation of what this is. If you desire the long one, that will have to wait.

[As Tanaka begins to explain, Nidai's ramping confusion quickly outstrips his shock.]

Woman? Beasts of legend?

[A long career of working with some of the most talented--and most volatile--young athletic heroes of their generation has taught Nidai how to roll with the punches, but these are a lot of punches to roll with, even for him. Isn't this Tanaka's usual incomprehensible babbling? Nekomaru has no idea where to even begin translating.

Still, it seems, whatever it is Tanaka's trying to convey, the situation at least isn't the same sort of crisis that the Fun House was. He senses no killing intent from Tanaka, even in this...weird...form of his.]

Then...this isn't Jabberwock Island? Well, the weather's different enough...

[He looks around once, rubbing his chin, then crosses his arms and nods firmly.]

Hmmm. All right. As long as you swear as a man to explain the rest later... Are you well, like that? And the rest of our class, how were they when you left them? Are they here?

[I.e. What the fuck happened after you murdered the shit out of my shit, bruh?]

[As the big guy is groaning, he's getting a sympathetic look from the naga across the street. Looks like a newcomer who's taking it pretty hard.

- And then he starts talking about food groups. If this were a 90s anime, he'd fall over.]

So that's what you're worried about...?

[He might have to write this comedic misunderstanding down for a manzai sketch.]

[Nidai turns to the newcomer and seems to accept the random comment as genuine intent to discuss, from the way he strides right up and holds the pamphlet in the naga's face.]

It's preposterous! It's one thing to accept the physiological changes that make such a diet necessary for survival, but not to consider the risks...!

[He raises his voice to a level that's really not appropriate, even outdoors.]

Without any plant fiber, how are people supposed to take a decent shit?!

[And now it's about constipation?! The hits keep coming. More importantly, this guy is super intense...! Yuya's half-covering his ears at that shout. He can't help it, he's a weenie. But he takes a breath, since it seems he's misunderstanding something.]

It's okay! You can eat your veggies, no one's going to stop you!

[In fact, let's just take this pamphlet that's been shoved in his face with a frustrated look and a sigh. He really wishes those guys would stop touting it.]

This thing is... not very accurate. What we go through here isn't about a diet... Though it should be about keeping as many alive as we can, we can agree on that much.

[YOU CAN'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING A STRANGER HANDS YOU ON THE STREET, NIDAI!!!!]

Hahaha, I see! So I was mistaken. Still, any knowledge gleaned is a worthwhile investment! While I may not have the full truth about what my classmates and I should be eating, I have, at least, learned something about the local culture around it.

[He gives Yuya a once-over, and is apparently satisfied with what he sees.]

So! What's your name? I have to thank you properly for your advice.

[Ah. Now there's a voice he doesn't even need super hearing to make out. Though Fuyuhiko can't say he's pleased to hear it. As much as he likes his classmates, this is the last place he'd want any of them to end up. And Nekomaru was definitely near the top of his "deserves this the least" list.]

[But even so, at the loud proclamation of the team manager's favorite four-letter word, the little werewolf stalks his way over towards the too-familiar voice, hands shoved in his pockets as per the norm. He's a little furrier than the last time Nekomaru saw him, but he's definitely still Fuyuhiko.]

...really? [Okay, he was gonna say hi, but he reached his classmate just in time to hear what "THIS SHIT" was referring to. And a different, more exasperated and utterly disbelieving response leaves his mouth instead.] Someone hands you Intro to Cannibalism and that's the part that bothers you?

[Man, he knows you're an optimist and all but come on.]

Kuzuryuu!!

[He'd recognize that eyepatch anywhere.

Bemoaning the state of nutrition education can wait, Nekomaru's got a buddy to greet. He closes the distance and thumps Kuzuryuu soundly on the back, bellowing out a laugh.]

It's good to see a classmate alive and well, if a bit changed from the last time I saw you! Tell me, have you already transformed into one of those "beasts of legend" Tanaka was telling me about? Doesn't that get hot in the summer?

[Fuyuhiko may be stronger now than he was when he was wholly human, but a clap on the back from Nekomaru Nidai is still no laughing matter. His knees buckle slightly and a wheeze escapes his lungs, though he luckily manages to stay on his feet.]

I-- what? [Maybe it's because he got the wind slightly knocked out of him, but the disparity between the two questions Nekomaru just asked throws Fuyuhiko for something of a loop. What the hell, dude. One thing at a time, please!]

It...sorta? I've only got it once the sun goes down though so it's not that bad. Plus, I'm used to the heat. [He's from Osaka, after all. It's the cold he can't deal with. He'll actually be pretty thankful for the fur once winter rolls around.] But no shit I have, why else would I look like this?

[He's glad to see you too, Nekomaru. Sort of. Would be more glad if they were both back home but whatever.]

[Saionji is just standing as far away as she can from the groaning giant. Even if she's nearly a foot taller than before, he still towers over her...and it looks like he's angry.

Then she hears him.]

How ironic... the meathead is angry about being a carnivore...

...Saionji! Hm.

[With a surprised grunt, he blinks and takes in her changed appearance.]

Perhaps such a dramatic increase in proteins has been beneficial for your development, at least...

I got plenty of proteins before that! I just finally hit my growth spurt.

[No, Saionji, no you didn't. 'All candy' is not a good diet even if you have a high metabolism.]

[So, Nidai, you haven't met Koizumi yet! Allow me to change this for you - because the moment her sharp, Minotaur hearing picks up the sound of a classmate, this muscular beast of a girl just has to check it out and make sure he's alright.

And true to form, it's exactly who she expects, which means Nidai is being met with... most of a smile. It's a little hard to smile when you've got three foot tusks jutting out of your mouth.]

Nidai! ... You're not really putting stock in those phony pamphlets, are you?

[That's asked as she slows to a stop about a foot away from him, looking at the titles of the goofy brochures in his arms...
Please don't make her worry about you, Nidai. She gets that enough from the rest of the class that's here.]

[It takes Nidai a second or two, but, oh--the camera. Of course!]

[Aaaaah, his classmates are all alive once more. For all this world's strangeness, it is good to see them walking around, going about their business, just like they tried to keep their spirits up on the island.]

You're looking well! I hope you've been taking care of your body properly, with muscles like that!

[- Well, she was going to greet him just as cheerfully, but then he had to go and mention The Minotaur Thing.]
