Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:
Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.
Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.
Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.
SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together.
SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.
SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.
[There's at least one new arrival who is already regretting stepping out of the hospital. While it'd be incorrect to say that Jack wasn't used to people, he certainly doesn't prefer the company of money-grubbing little--
--hang on, they're trying to give him things. Nothing he really wants, but the sooner people try to push things on him, the more willing he is to listen. The whole 'eating people' thing isn't really his bag. Pushing them in the dirt, giving them painful wedgies, feeding them to each other...those things were more his speed.
So yeah, it doesn't quite make sense, but he'll roll with it until the offers turn into shoving pamphlets into his hand. That's when Jack starts to get sour. Having people grovel was much more entertaining.]
Okaaaaay, this is weird. Bored now.
[It doesn't take long before Jack finds ways to entertain himself, like flagging down the poor folks who were trying to coax themselves into his good graces.]
Hey--hey you! Not you, you! With the hair! Actually, scratch that, both of you! Make me a paper crane out of this thing here, or I'll gouge your eyes out!
[Not actually the plan right this second (maybe in like...an hour, after he's settled into this place that wasn't Helios), but fear was always such an excellent motivator.]
[Scenario Two]
[The giggling doesn't bother Jack in the fear department, but damn if it isn't annoying the piss out of him in short order. Pandora lacked trees, and Helios practically had a map tattooed onto the surface of his mind -- without any of that territory, he's completely lost and incredibly cranky.
His pocketwatch hasn't worked properly since arrival -- he attributes it to Helios being out of range, not to mention that this place seemed trapped in the stone age in comparison to where Hyperion was. There's no connection to the ECHOnet, which means no way to make maps and navigate.]
What the hell does a guy have to do to get some freakin' signal out here?!
[That sure is a 40something year old man throwing a rock at a tree.]
[San was on his way home after taking care of some errands for the day, but it was hard to ignore the commotion that Jack was causing. Morbid threats? He's game.]
With what? Your fingers? [He chuckles, clearly amused by the thought as he approaches. It was quite clear he wasn't like most of the normal residents, due to the white glowing white eyes and the dark aura that surrounded him.] Although you probably don't need any help if you attract the attention of any good-doers for threatening the townsfolk.
[Jack straightens just a little after someone has the courage to approach him even after his threads. His eyebrow raises, the smooth lines of the mask adhered to his face following. San's look is...well, he stands out in comparison to the frightened groveling villagers.
Reminds him a little of Zarpedon which, of course, pisses him off just a little. Not enough to let it show. Besides, he was taking pleasure in his threats. Its a start.]
I'm open to suggestions.
[Cordial, with a smooth and almost too-serene smile to go along with it.]
On how to avoid getting attacked by self-proclaimed heroes or ideas on how to torture these people even more?
[It was a rhetorical question, since he assumed that Jack would pick the torture option. The shade tilts his head, taking in Jack's appearance. The face mask was certainly interesting and the fact that it moved so seamlessly when the other man talked.]
[That first line makes him scoff. Self-proclaimed heroes. Boy, did he know plenty of those. How fortunate that not everything would be so different from what he's used to.]
I don't need any help in the first department, kiddo. Promise.
[The smile stays perfectly fixed in place, one blue and one green eye narrowing expectantly.]
You sound like you have some ideas. You...wanna tell me what's with these people first?
I figured as much. [Another chuckle slips out, but it quickly fades.] Don't call me 'kiddo', I'm much older than you even though I don't look it.
[He could definitely match smiles, although his was looking a bit more smug.] As much as I would love to tell you, I doubt we want anyone listening in and warning others. It would certainly take the fun out of things, wouldn't you agree?
[San is going to be disappointed when Jack doesn't cut out the kiddos. However, he also isn't interested in making enemies so soon, so he restrains himself from saying it just to make his point.]
I don't, actually. [He spreads his hands impassively and shrugs his shoulders. Having warning spread meant they could corner and hunt them like fish in a barrel. But Jack is still only human, and his tech is malfunctioning. Better to play by his acquaintance's rules for now.] But whatever floats your boat will float mine all the same. Lead on.
[That certainly earns Jack a raised eyebrow. Here he thought the other man wanted to keep his unruly reputation unknown until he was settled in a bit more. Then again, the shade was trying to keep up his own appearance to the public despite his unusual appearance and hiding the fact he was responsible for several comatose innocents after ripping out their souls while in his more monstrous form.]
Well, I could give you a tour but you've already acquainted yourself with the hospital. [He takes the lead and gestures the masked man to follow him with his hand.] As for your earlier question, they're anxious every time a group of people are fished out of the water with various injuries. Eventually, they transform in to monsters. Hopefully you're not too attached to your human form.
Jack already had a various amount of scars on him, but he had noticed a few new scratches when he had woken up. As a matter of fact, he was quite attached to being...well, him.
You would be too, if you were him.]
Sooooo...you have a freakshow...problem.
[He gestures with both hands, and eyes a scratch on his wrist while frowning.]
[San was a completely different supernatural being before he arrived on the peninsula. He wasn't pleased to adjust to his mortal body's demands and weaknesses, even with the additions of becoming a shade.]
The townsfolk would agree about the monster problem. [He stuffs his hands in to his pants pocks and it was clear that he was annoyed with the subject of his next sentence.] You can thank the multiple gods that they worship for causing this.
[With his focus preoccupied on the various methods of how he'd get back at the deities, he's unaware of the wisps that start to pour out from his skin. His human appearance was starting to fade in to a dark, featureless humanoid.]
[Hopefully he doesn't mind the young lady whose chilling in a tree without much concern. There's a brief flutter of her wings at his yelling. Ugh. She groans and shifts just enough so that she's facing him. Well...at least as much as she can without climbing down.]
Geez, you know if you shout more I'm sure that will make everything work.
[He doesn't necessarily mind, but considering he's annoyed at everything at the moment, its likely unsurprising that the annoyed glare turns to an unimpressed glance upward until he happens to spot said young lady's wings. One blue and one green eye blink a few times in succession. What the hell was with this place?
Still, he can't stay annoyed for long with something like a fairy hovering over him.]
Depends on what you're dealing with, babe. Usually works pretty well, in my experience.
[And just like that, his temper evaporates like it had never been there in the first place, and he's turning to crane his neck upward.]
[She tries so hard not to laugh right away and to her credit, she doesn't. Seth shrugs and swings her legs idly over the branch. At least for her being lost around the place wasn't exactly new and compared to other things she'd dealt with, being lost as a godsend.]
I would think you'd be able to tell what I'm looking at. You can still see, right?
[And judging by his tone, he's pretty impressed by the fact that he's drawn some attention. The vanity practically oozes out of his pores. The smirk is both too sharp and too smooth when carved on the mask.]
But you're out here for a reason, right? Unless you've just been following me this whole time. Wouldn't blame you for that.
[She does chuckle at that. If there was one thing that was funny it was always people. Vain people especially. She slides off the branch and flutters down to the ground.]
I got bored, wanted to go for a walk...turned into a flying 101 lesson review. Don't worry though, you're not my type. I'm not going to stalking you anytime soon.
[Predictably, Jack scoffs at the idea. He steps forward confidently, and stops a few paces short of her. He's not a complete moron after all -- she's clearly more supernatural than he is.
A magical slap across the face probably hurts more than an actual fist. Its been a while.]
Its alright, I'm everyone's type, sweet cheeks.
[His mismatched eyes move to watch her wings move.]
[ She doesn't know what she expected from the proverbial afterlife. But she feels numb, numb in a different way to how it felt when she was flooded with eridium, burning from the inside out with a power that was uncontainable, surged out through a whole companies system and even further. All cracked open to her and it's all -- gone.
Dead as his signal apparently.
It was a hell of a trade off to be able to come up behind him and walk, as herself, fingers curled at her side and the long, long lines of her tattoos were just that. Flat lines that meant nothing. She breathed even, she moved with nothing to inhibit her and there was nothing he could do to control her right now.
But she wasn't a fool, wasn't an idiot, there was a very deliberate and careful distance between them. She refused to be within a foot of him if she didn't have to. ]
[Since the accident, Jack had been running on pure adrenaline high -- a fear reaction no doubt from nearly being killed not once, not twice, but three times. It wasn't hard to recognize in the way he smirked and laughed his way through his days, hollow and yet still so very loud with blatant disregard for the world around him.
But here is where the laughter stops.
He can't feel one emotion more than he feels another when he hears Angel reply to his frustration. Too much information hits him all at once, short-circuiting his thought process and pulling him into silence as he tries to figure out how to react. Anger wins out over everything else -- a strange mix of anger and a deep-seated fear as he turns in Angel's direction. It has to be the damned forest playing tricks on him.
Nobody. Nothing could have gotten Angel out of crisis core. He'd dedicated his money and his blood to making damn sure nobody would touch his prize -- his little girl.
"Dad". Informal.
Jack's face forces itself smooth, and regardless of the careful distance between them, he moves to immediately close it. He looms over her like an angered (and frightened) viper, unable to decide where it should strike first. Misplaced anger.]
Sorry -- sorry kiddo, I didn't quite catch that, so let's start over.
[A deep exhale, a clearing of his throat, and a batting of eyelashes. She's out of the core. She's out of the core where people can reach her and he's going to kill them all--]
[ She doesn't know what she's expecting, really, that he would be different now that they weren't on Pandora. That she wasn't in a core and he wasn't in control of Hyperion, no robots and it didn't matter because there was no way she could interface with them as it was.
But she didn't expect him to get worse. ( should have, she'd heard him, heard him begging and pleading and tell her that he'd forgive her. Like she ever needed forgiveness from him for the things he'd done. )
It's hard not to shrink back from him when he was like this, it always had been, when he took things from her and punished her in his tempers and that collar tightened so badly on her throat in a way that yes -- yes she had a planet of a brain, but it didn't mean anything right now.
Stands her ground, but she can't help the cringe that comes out of a knee jerk reaction. ]
I said, [ no, no he couldn't do anything to her anymore, not here, not ever, she had made sure of that the only way she could ] Dad, we're all cut off here.
[ Her shoulders hunched up, at odds with her stubborn tone and she learned it from him.
[He reaches out to grab her, but hesitates in the form of a near flinch -- like he forgets all at once that she had just told him that she was cut off. But she was cut off, which is the most concerning thing. Hovering, torn between finishing his motion and his own fury, his hands shake between them and slowly curl into fists.
Cut off? Cut off???]
They--you're not interfaced, are you?
[He scoffs and relaxes all at once, like the euphoria of solving the riddle that wasn't really there had managed to calm him down. Its quite the opposite of course. He's realizing that being cut off from ECHOnet means more than just losing control on Pandora.
It means his siren charging station is kaputz. It means no vault keys, no vaults.
It means he's royally screwed.]
You gotta be fricken' kidding me!
[He raises his fists over Angel's head, wrists trembling in resistance. They come down, but they open to grip her shoulders in a vice as opposed to striking her. The impoliteness is secondary to the revelation that not only was Angel out of her core, but that she couldn't even defend herself if she wanted to.
She was practically useless.]
Ok -- ok, its fine. Everything's fine. We'll be fine. So incredibly...fine.
[Its an exhale mixed with a growl, but the composure comes across his body like the mask he wears daily, like water over stone.]
[ It should make her feel powerful, that he flinches from touching her.
It doesn't.
It stings, it always stung. It shouldn't not right now, how frustrated he is with it all, after all she finally, finally turned her back on him, after all these years.
But it's the same thing it always is, he's going to hear one thing, he doesn't have his vault, he doesn't have her charging his vault key and the thing that made him so... afraid for her, was gone.
Stands to reason he would take it in the worst possible way, and it filters back into her voice regardless of so long trying to keep one face up to him. Head turned away from the worst of his anger, because she doesn't have her powers anymore and that opens up a whole new problem. ]
No, I'm not. It's just me. [ Her arms lift to cross across her chest, and it's defensive. Arms locked, all elbows and sharp angles in some attempt to hug herself, shoulders tense and stiff where he grips her and his hands are solid and she was going to have an impossible time to get him off her. ]
[He's squeezing tight enough to hurt, despite the fact that he isn't angry with her. He has no reason to be, as far as he knows. None of them made a conscious choice to show up here, and he can't imagine Angel would willingly forfeit her powers.
Jack goes quiet and reaches for her arms, checking for the scratches he and others had arrived with, closely examining the siren markings on her arm with an ever increasing frown.]
Alright, ok, new plan. Haven't quite got it hammered down one-hundred-percent, but fifty works for now. You're gonna stick with me, and we're gonna get the hell out of the pinies here, and we're gonna go find somewhere to take care of this crap.
[Angel's out of the core. Angel is out of the core. Jack spends most of their exchange looking down at her tattoos and at her neck where the collar had been. She's not lethargic or even remotely sick...had this place cured her of eridium poisoning?
Too many questions and not enough answers makes for an angry Handsome bastard.]
[ He thinks he knows her, but he doesn't, he has no idea what she'll do, and she's not sure if it's luck anymore, that she found him in the depths of this forest where it could have been so many others. Her fingers curling around her elbows, and she doesn't have anything else to say to what he's said.
That is the same as it always is, it's his mad rambling, his insanity, his desperate need to be in control of everything, and when he couldn't do that, be in control of her.
They've been here before after all, not this place, but -- ]
[ It's only ever about what he wants and that's expected to, what like being ripped from one world to another was ever going to make him relent? Yeah right. She knew better than that, knew that his grip was a vise even when she was sick and squirming to get out of it where he's latched on and he may as well be dragging her.
Doesn't have, doesn't have to do anything he wants her to. But he's stronger, even if she's not sick off eridium, she's still small, still been locked up her whole life. ]
No -- [ what did it matter right then? She's leaning against his grip, trying to twist out of it. Vault hunters always made this sort of thing look so easy. ] Let me go, you don't need to march me around.
