TEST DRIVE MEME: MAY/JUNE

TDM: MAY/JUNE

Welcome to the Ryslig Test Drive Meme! Below are a few prompts to get you started, but you may make up any prompt you desire! Please take a look at the navigation page for rules, setting information, and links to reserves and apps. Have fun!

SCENARIO ONE

You wake up on the beach thoroughly drenched, with your mouth full of sand. The salt water is making all the cuts and scrapes on your skin sting and the sand isn't helping. The air is slightly humid, ruining any feeling of refreshment you might have gotten from your dip in the ocean.

There are lights in the distance, but the unfriendly scent of gunpowder fills the air. If you're lucky, you're alone. If not - you might find yourself staring up into a pair of monstrous eyes or down the barrel of a local's shotgun.

SCENARIO TWO

So you've just arrived, and already some of the natives are trying to get on your good side with offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all on the more informative end of the scale. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous readers saying they're lies, or pointing out good "jokes."

Then there are the people who aren't happy to see you at all. Glares and silent, judging stares if you're lucky, torches and pitchforks attempting to drive you out of the town if you're not. You may need a friend to help you.

SCENARIO THREE

"Seek us out," the voice whispers in your head, and before you have time to question it you've found yourself in someplace entirely alien.

Maybe it's the Fog God's ghostly town of Dyster, where exultant followers dance around bonfires and sing their praises to the skies above. Maybe it's the Fourth God's arcade, with small robots wheeling about amidst the lights and colors of old pinball machines.

Only one thing is certain: you are not alone, in this sacred place.

SCENARIO FOUR

The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

Options.

[The word is spat with derision and indignation. He has never had options and he's done trying to delude himself into thinking he ever could. That's why he left with Danarius without a fight, when Hawke sold him down the river with nothing more than a half shrug. He was never meant to have choice and fighting it is pointless.

He bares his teeth, wider than he'd like, but with the sudden growth of fangs in his mouth that he's unused to he's finding it difficult to close his mouth.]

What do you know? [He's tempted to bash this mirror in too. To take his anger out on something, but that's a step away from taking his anger out on someone, and he knows it. He doesn't want to become that kind of monster no matter what his body is doing right now.] Just get out!

Right now? All I know is that you're more willing to drown yourself in a toilet than anything else.

[ And the disdain in his tone, on his face makes it plain enough what he thinks of it. Pathetic. His own teeth are sharpening as he speaks, though he hardly notices. Not yet. ]

Which— If that's your plan? Then you're goddamn right I'd rather leave. It was already going to be a hassle, explaining away the broken mirrors — never mind a corpse.

[Well yeah it sounds fucking stupid when you put it like that, Rafe.]

Of course it's not my plan.

[He's used to being looked down on like that. So much so that it shouldn't bother him as much as it does. But it does. Maybe because it's coming from some random asshole in a bathroom presuming to know anything about what he's spouting out of his mouth. Or maybe it's because he's starting to see how completely pathetic he's become, deserving of such disdain. Maybe because he was finally getting used to the idea of having choice, only to have it ripped away from him, only to end up here and thus having resigned himself to his inevitable fate for nothing. Maybe because he doesn't want to believe he's being given hope to get away from his master once and for all. He can't stand having it be taken away again.

That look is the only thing stubbornly keeping him from admitting that yeah, he really would rather drown himself in a toilet than become a fucking abomination.]

You obviously have no idea what it means to become a demon. [His claws grip the ledge of the sink, scratches being left in the porcelain.] Your mind is no longer your own. You don't have options.

Then how? Bash your brains out on the sink, what.

[ It sounds fucking stupid because it is fucking stupid. No amount of spin will make it not.

Honestly, that's the only thing he's said so far that makes sense— Rafe should leave. Wash his hands of the room twice over and not look back. So what keeps him? Just the simple fact that being stuck here, he's suddenly found himself bereft of a whole hell of a lot of resources and these other so-called "monsters"? Are unfortunately at the top of any list of potential assets. Assuming they don't go around offing themselves.

So the anger he's finally seeing, the response he seems to finally be getting? Decent sign. Hence he'll keep pushing buttons. Doesn't hurt that he's always had a talent for it.
]

You've become a demon before, then? [ Sarcastic, dry as a bone. ] Since you seem to be such an expert.

[Fenris scoffs and rolls his eyes.]

No, I haven't become a demon before. I've seen it plenty of times already. I've seen people's minds be taken, nothing left of their former selves, completely twisted into a mockery of what they once were. They're a danger to everyone around them.

[That's why he doesn't want to allow himself to become one. Why he would prefer someone to plunge a shard of glass into his throat before he loses himself completely, because that's clearly what's happening here.]

It normally only happens to mages. Those who foolishly traipsed where they shouldn't have. Apparently, the rules are different here.

[Which is a whole other load of things to unpack that he absolutely doesn't want to think about now while his body is twisting into some nightmare creature.]

[ Rafe nods, lips pursed as he makes it clear that he's listening. Listening and ready to rebut yet again. ]

So if the rules are different here, then how do you know how it'll be the same as whatever you've seen before?

[ Never mind what's left unsaid: or are you just being an melodramatic pissant failing to put two logical thoughts together. ]

I don't.

[His hand tightens into a fist on the sink. The anger and defiance he once had is still there, just bubbling underneath the surface, except he keeps pushing it back as hard as he can.]

Have you never had control stripped away from you completely? With a demon, or magic, it's far worse than you could possibly imagine. It's hardly worth the risk.

[At least he would have a choice in the matter.]

Granted, I've no experience with matters such as... [ Guy's popping horns like a Dodge Ram Memorial Day sale but Rafe still isn't comfortable saying the word magic. Evidence to the contrary smack in front of him but it still sounds like bullshit. ] But I don't grant the premise.

[ Control is always an option. Always. It may be occasionally lost but only for those weak enough not to hold onto it, and the weaker-willed not to get it back. ]

Regardless, you still don't know that's happening. Still seem to have plenty enough control to complain about it and yell at strangers in a lavatory.

Perhaps you shouldn't speak of things you know nothing about, human.

[He turns a snarl to Rafe, wondering just why this man hasn't walked away yet? What should his decision, whatever it may be, matter to him anyway? The fact that he's still here arguing — as people seem to love doing with him — only frustrates him further.]

How do you know I am not barely restraining the urge to rip your throat out? [He turns from the sink to face him fully, not moving, but looking as if he's ready to at a moment's notice.] How can you be sure my control isn't a hairline away from slipping?

[He's not quite there yet, as much as he wants to break things, but he doesn't want to get there, either. He doesn't want to lash out at someone (no matter how much of an annoying prick they are) and have that blood on his hands. Which is why he wants this annoyingly brazen asshole to leave.]
