TEST DRIVE MEME

TEST DRIVE MEME
Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • Manticores have been added to the bestiary!
  • Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
  • For the first app round only, you can app TWO characters.
  • Mod applications are open until Wednesday!
  • Reserve and application dates have been announced.
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: You've just been released from the hospital in Vandare and no one really seems to know what to do with you. The locals offer polite advice but don't seem to want to spend a lot of time with you. You and the other new arrivals stick out like sore thumbs, so perhaps one will spot you wandering about town.

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together.

SCENARIO THREE: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

Jehan had never blushed quite so much in his life, he was certain. If his blushes registered now. He was not quite certain that his new body and form did all of that, considering that he technically would not have blood anymore. Either way, this went beyond being a little shy among some people. No, this was full on, crawl into holes and bury himself there and die embarrassment.

And...Oh God, was she vibrating? Was that a symptom of some other change or other? That was...rather worrisome, quite honestly.

She did sound angrier now, if that were possible, though granted, she'd been nearly victim to a nymph attack, and that could certainly produce it. That and she was a young woman in general. Jehan had kept company with less of those than some of his friends, but enough to know that women's anger was a thing to be greatly, greatly feared when it came out. Trying to repair this seemed to be the best of options but, really.

"This is all rather awkward but I do owe you an apology and introduction, at least." He tried, ducking his head and staring at one of the daisies sprouting from his arms. "I AM quite sorry that I came to bother you. I did not intend to eat you when I felt it. And I still do not, if that might be avoided." There was a beat where he took in the ridiculousness of what he had said and slightly wished for a swift death to spare him all of the awkwardness but it was not exactly to be.

"And I am Jean Prouvaire but call me Jehan if you would, most everyone does. I admit this is hardly a place or situation to develop friendships from, but you should at least know the name of the rampaging french creature who has inconvenienced you."

foolishwren: "no" (to quote hamlet act III scene iii line 9)

Heather wasn't quite wishing for a lightning bolt to drop from the sky and put an end to the parade of schadenfreude, but she could certainly understand the 'swift deathwish' thing.

"Fine, all right, Spinach John."

The subtle inflections of the French language were slightly lost on her, but well, at least Spinach John was probably better than Inconvenient Rampaging French Creature.

And at least she wasn't ripping up the grass anymore.

She wasn't quite ballsy enough to do so right in front of him.

Still keeping a safe distance from the tangle of vine and dude, she lowered herself into a catlike hunker-- her own changes had only just begun a short time before but she'd seen enough other people start to morph that they hadn't completely taken her by surprise.

"So what now? Are you legit compelled to go chomp on anyone who ignores the 'Please Don't Walk on the Grass' signs?"

Spinach John. That made Jehan snort, a lot. And well, it somewhat suited. It was not quite in the realm of the heights of dubious "sophistication" that his friends' puns were, but he liked it well enough, he guessed. It was better than "Marguerite", for the daisies growing on his arms, that was for certain.

"You know, that one is actually not too bad in the scheme of things." He mused, glad that the grass pulling had stopped as well, at least for now. "And not so much compelled to chomp on as it actually hurts when something happens to a plant that I am near. And well, feeding. I've not quite worked myself up to trying it yet. There is something so horrible in the process, but my mind and vines are not of an accord with that. When I cannot, they attempt to take over. Ordinarily, I find grass pulling disgusting but it should not mean I just eat people. It's all rather a bit too rude for my tastes, somehow, if that makes any sense. And allow me to guess, you are changing yourself? In that case, well, it probably is not much consolation, but I will at least not wish,or need to eat you once it has become more evident."

So that was something positive about the situation, wasn't it?

foolishwren: The walls are coated in human skin and stuff's starting to move under it, LET'S JUST LEAVE. (... You know what?)

"It actually hurts you?"

That changed the situation slightly-- being a dirty hippie who thought every algae particle had a soul and deserved rights protected by the government was one thing, but well, she couldn't genuinely argue with actual genuine pain.

"That's-- well. Sucks to be you, I guess. Sorry."

Probably the closest thing to an apology he was going to get. She didn't look quite as wary now, though she still kept her distance.

Lifting an arm, she turned it this way and that, looking at the coating of fur starting to grow on it.

"But yeah. Sort of trying not to think about it."

"It really does, yes. It feels as though, well, like a very well placed gutpunch, and that is before the emotional side of things comes into play." Jehan explains, and maybe he looks a little tired. His sigh certainly sounds that way as he tries to explain that just a little more.

"The physical bits hurt, I cannot say otherwise, but the other factor, the gut churning, horribly awful one, is also something similar to the way I felt when I saw my closest friend die in front of me. It feels like a lesser version of losing Bahorel when a plant is harmed, as though whatever my new body means to do, being even closer to plants than I was in life out there is one of them. It certainly is unusual, but, ...what do you mean by 'sucks'?"

He could not for the life of him think of anything or anyone that would want to suck him , unless it was to suck his energy or blood or something now that they were turning into monsters. And well, he could think of another context for sucking but it was improper even for Jehan to consider voicing.

"And I accept that apology." he said to the sort of apology. "I am sorry too, for that matter, that I was compelled to come over here to yell at you with little explanation, and that my roots decided it was time to feed."

Suddenly, the insanity of their situations settled in, and in spite of everything else, Jehan DID have to laugh, at least a little.

foolishwren: and brother, i'm grinding that shit like tony hawk (the horror vs comedy line is razor thin)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2014-07-10 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, gee, this conversation sure took a depressing turn.

Heather listened, expression briefly turning unreadable-- the request for clarification on the sucking (which she would have been all too happy to explain, in delightfully vulgar I'M A BIG BAD TEENAGER LISTEN TO ME TALK ABOUT DICKS detail) went in one year and out the other under the pall of melancholy that surrounded the rest of Jehan's explanation.

The talk of friends and death wouldn't have been something that hit home had she been brought here even a week before she actually had been-- not that she'd been completely carefree or anything (quite the opposite, in fact), but no one in her immediate vicinity had died in quite some time.

And then her entire life had been ripped from its roots and re-potted upside-down, and a gopher had come over and started chewing on the exposed under-bits. You know, in keeping with the plant-themes going on here.

A painful twinge pinched in Heather's chest at the unwelcome memories of home. She wondered if Douglas had ever made it out of there alive.

Then she pushed the thought from her head, mouth quirking upwards into an automatic grin when he started to chuckle. It didn't have a WHOLE lot of mirth in it, but Heather had always been the sort to laugh the bad feelings away.

"This place is nuts."

Jehan, having come from his death to here, and knowing that his other friends had probably died there, would have understood her feelings.  And melancholia, for that matter. It was an emotion that he knew very well indeed, as it kept coming up for him.  The good thing about it was that he managed to produce more lines of poetry like that.  Not that it helped either of them right now though.

The grin, at least the fact that she was trying was pleasantly surprising and all, but, still, it was doing them both about as much good as Jehan's attempts to fight his new biology. Even so, he laughed at her assessment.

"It really IS." He agreed, having picked up that slang earlier on. "And I do hope, that once we are both fully monsterified, we can get through things without my body wanting to eat you. " Then he thought about that statement, and he blushed.  "I ah...sorry. That sounds rather...well, not what I had intended, certainly."
foolishwren: I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!! (ohmygod danny devito!!!)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2014-07-12 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
"It's... okay. Honestly, if I wasn't really craving a burger right now, maybe I'd have tried to chomp on you, too."

She could joke about it now, because the hunger pangs hadn't fully set in.

She's still at the stage where she can deny it and push it to the back of her head where it seems more like some funky thing that may or may not be a hallucination.

Not something that's going to make her start daydreaming about how nice it would be to feel fresh blood burst in her mouth as she snaps something's neck with her jaws alone.

[personal profile] yetintrepid 2014-07-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)

"Burgers are one of the surprisingly nice things I've found here." Jehan mused. "Which makes this whole plant thing kind of sad, I guess. I do not THINK I am the venus flytrap type of plant, after all. Although if I was going to feed on humans, it MAY not be that unheard of to eat burgers."

He was joking too, mostly because he hadn't a clue what to do when things really set in, and and when he could not stop himself at all. It's easier to make light of some things when they are upon you than to tell the truth. It's not something he subscribed to at home, but it IS a truth he's found here. And anything to stave off his own daydreams and urges, right?

foolishwren: and i never will. i've already forgotten what you said, good bye forever (Wow ive never thought about it like that)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2014-07-15 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
"That's actually kinda cool. ... I mean, awful, but cool. Very 'Little Shop of Horrors', you know?"

Better watch out, Jehan, or she'll start calling you Audrey II instead of Spinach John.

"I am not sure of your reference, really..." Jehan shakes his head, not quite getting the reference. While his world has its share of nasty dentists, particularly one named Babet, it does not contain plants with any sort of taste for them, so he can only shake his head when it comes to that. It's a thing he's not been exposed to here, though if it exists that ought to change. As for 'cool', well, his first thought is temperature, naturally, even though he knows perfectly well it is a slang term now. At least he takes that statement for what t is.

"I suppose as things like this go, it might have been much worse, true. I did rather love plants at home, but this is, well, a stretch from my windowsill violets."

foolishwren: Im highly fucked up. Ive been known to say rude things and watch the carnage brutally unfold (ill tell u this right now: im from hell)

"... Oh. Uh. It's a musical."

Maybe they didn't have it in France.

She's just... sort of assuming he's from modern France, because Heather is, to be honest, rather sheltered. She may have slain a god and seen worlds most people couldn't even dream of, but she'd done all that in good old Maine.

[personal profile] yetintrepid 2014-07-16 01:24 am (UTC)(link)

"Ah..."

Jehan decides to just go with this. It seems to be another of the mysteries of the world that happened in a later time, like the burgers he's found out about here. He's content to leave that as it is. He might be making modern France seem a little more backwards, but even so, it works for him now.

"Well, in any case, you are right about it being worse. I would hate to be one of those other species people are becoming here. Those almost confined to the water and such. Much as I like swimming, that would get quite old, very fast."
