TEST DRIVE MEME: NOVEMBER

Welcome to the Ryslig Test Drive Meme! Below are a few prompts to get you started, but you may make up any prompt you desire! Please take a look at the navigation page for rules, setting information, and links to reserves and apps. Have fun!

SCENARIO ONE
You wake up on the beach thoroughly drenched with your mouth full of sand. The salt water causes various cuts and scrapes on your skin to sting and the sand isn't helping. The air is slightly humid, ruining any feeling of refreshment you might have gotten from your dip in the ocean. There are lights in the distance but the unfriendly scent of gunpowder fills the air. If you're lucky, you're alone. If not, you might find yourself staring up into a pair of monstrous eyes or down the barrel of a local's shotgun.

SCENARIO TWO
So you've just arrived, and already some of the natives are trying to get on your good side with offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous people who had them saying they are lies, or pointing out good "jokes." Then there's the people who aren't happy to see you at all. Glares and silent, judging stares if you're lucky, torches and pitchforks attempting to drive you out of the town if you're not. You may need a friend to help you.

SCENARIO THREE
"Seek us out," the voice whispers in your head, and before you have time to question it you've found yourself in someplace entirely alien. Maybe it's the Fog God's ghostly town of Dyster, where exultant followers dance around bonfires and sing their praises to the skies above. Maybe it's the Fourth God's arcade, with small robots wheeling about amidst the lights and colors of old pinball machines. Only one thing is certain: you are not alone, in this sacred place.

SCENARIO FOUR
The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

[OOC: Warning - these prompts contain spoilers for Danganronpa V3! If you would like to thread regardless, let me know if you'd like to avoid further spoilery content!]

A. Arrival.

[He's... whole again. Terribly cold, from hot to warm to cold -- on his knees, trembling in sand, his hands clawing at his face through wet wrappings, breath shuddering and catching and snagging in his lungs, the last thing he saw -- !]

Wh -- why -- !

[Feverish, feverish, abraded whispering. Rocking, slow, back heaving nothing but thin, thin flutters -- ]

Why, why, why, how -- how could she -- ! [An upward, sobbing hitch.] Why would she -- wh-why would you -- why... why, why, why, why why -- !

[A gasp in. With its draw, a finger comes trembling down his cheek to pull his mask down -- and there it is. A calm, warm voice...]

Try to be still, sweet Korekiyo. Collect yourself.

I would never abandon you.
[A... gentle lilting note.] You know this!

You are frightened, but I am here.

I love you.

[Her... He's beginning to still.

She... is. She's still here, she's still here she's still here she's still here she wouldn't leave, she wouldn't -- ...

He did it all for her.

But -- ...

A choking sigh in, and out. Thin.]

O-okay...

...Okay...

[And then...

Swallows, shakes out -- ]

-- I-it -- I-I... i-it must have been... b -- because I disappointed you... Sister... I-I didn't... I didn't reach my goal. But why -- ...

Hush... I am sorry for the pain I caused you. Please... please, forgive me. But it is done. Now, you are alive again. If you wish, you can continue your work. Korekiyo... I cannot tell you how precious you are to me...

[He begins to... reach up the side of his face. Smoothing what of his hair from where it starts to come down from under his hat, down and along to the side of his face, other hand kept close to mask.

A young, slim man crouched on the beach, maintaining a whispered dialogue with himself. Steadying. Steadying...

Steadying...]

B. Pamphlets.

[Curious.

He's gotten the... essentials of what's going on here. Mutation of humans into monsters and mythological creatures - from one trial to another, it seems, and he's... already stepping up to the observation of this one with a unique intrigue. This isn't a thing one would ever think they would get to observe - there ought to be new shades and stripes of beauty, points of human nature, to be seen and highlighted here, in the contrast and on the dividing line between human and not. In coping with change that bends humanity and its boundaries...!

He's emitting a little chuckle to himself, a soft, dry-hiss "khh-hh-hh...!" as he's... been taking things in, between the greetings of the locals, taking his first notes - there's quite a bit of respect or reverence for monsters-to-be, then? Or is it more of a matter of wanting to equip them to keep out of the way quickly? - and between politely receiving greetings and supplies. It's... exciting! A whole new land and culture to discover - and a whole new lens and frame through which to view human nature, what with...

Well, again, what's afoot here.

Sifting through the items he's been passed, meanwhile, he takes a... good look at the pamphlets.

Well. Some of these seem a bit... overly-specific, don't they?

And... a twinge of wry amusement in his head.

Not especially well-researched...

He flicks his eyes over to another apparent non-local. Likely the easiest sort of person to speak to, at the moment!

And he approaches, a hand raised, a soft, polite smile on his face behind the zipper.]

Pardon me.

May I trouble you for a moment of your time?

[His voice, too, is soft. Clear and articulate, but not terribly obtrusive.

He folds his arms, eyes shutting thoughtfully. Speaking fluently.]

In my studies as an anthropologist, I have endeavored to familiarize myself intimately with many of the world's myths... folktales... legends...

[And opens them. Flicks 'em down under heavy lashes to the basket looped onto a forearm. Adjusts his hat at the brim before reaching in for one of the pamphlets.]

This includes the creatures of which they tell, and the seeds of human fear and wonder from which they've bloomed as embodiments.

[And he holds it up.]

However... my sphere of knowledge contains nothing regarding the existence of supposed "Axe Thief Axehounds".

[With a soft lifting, rippling note of amusement. A little offer of a joke, be it at his own expense or not. He wouldn't be... skeptical - that certainly does sound like fodder for a story - if it wasn't for the fact that it's a bit of a not-fit with some of the other types of creature he's caught mentioned so far. Harpies, minotaurs, werewolves...]

C. Wildcard!

[Would you like another prompt or scenario, or do you have an idea for a thread? Feel free to hit me with anything!]

[Zack stares dumbly at the pamphlet before him.]

[He can't read, but the stranger's description was all the info he needed.]

Uh... How the hell should I know? Sounds like some shit out of a B Movie to me.

[personal profile] fauxlore 2017-11-10 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ha...

He'd... pegged this particular stranger with the idea that he looks about as not from around here as he does in mind!

But... he doesn't make a thing of that initial response - this fellow can't read, very well, then, wherever he's from people just aren't taught to rigorously or obligatorily - but...

He still knows what a B-Movie is -- some faint, additional cackle, at the thought of the disconnect - whatever it is, the man came from a setup he wasn't expecting to run into -- but still, at the same time, he doesn't mean for it to seem... unkind!

He re-crosses his arms. Lets his eyes lower again, not as an expression of dismissal but as, well... thought.]

There are times at which folklore crosses into the realm of what one would call -- "B-Horror".

However graceful or graceless it is, humankind fears what it fears.

[Less than a second's worth of pointed pause.]

Tell me -- how familiar are you with the Japanese kappa?

[He says this like he is about to tell a great joke.]

zackthekiller: (There's lead inside my belly)

[personal profile] zackthekiller 2017-11-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[The truth behind his illiteracy is much worse than that, but who really cares right now?]

[There's a weirdo in a mask asking about intellectual bullshit. Zack was gonna reply to that fear comment with a snippy "No shit, Sherlock," but the guy posed a question before he could respond.]

... No? What the hell is a Kappa?

[personal profile] fauxlore 2017-11-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
[And, ha...

He had picked this one in particular on the thought that they both looked like they weren't, ah, exactly from around here.

And... who knows? He can't know the "I can't read" bit without further detail, but beyond that?

Well. He has just been invited to explain a bit of lore.

And he is not going to say no to something such as that!

He... bows his head, for a moment, to acknowledge this fellow's invitation to... let him explain, before he speaks up, arms re-crossing...]

The kappa is often said to resemble a cross between a human, a monkey, and a turtle. It frequently dwells in waterways.

[He angles his head... slightly lower...]

And should anyone relieve themselves in those waterways, a kappa may appear to turn the individual inside-out from within their bowels to the interior of their skin.

[His eyes flicker up again. With a smile, under the mask, nothing more than a "what do you think about that?" kind of thouht...!'
zackthekiller: (It is far beyond dry)

[personal profile] zackthekiller 2017-11-11 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
[.......]

... Why the hell did you want to tell me about some creepy-ass shit like that?!

[Congrats, you are officially a weirdo.]

[It wouldn't be the first time he's gotten that verdict!

But nonetheless, he laughs that soft, hissing little laugh to himself again. Running a hand up the opposite arm to the shoulder, as if to physically suppress his own amusement a little.

Looks like he's... kind of made his point, at least?

Which is...]

My intention was only to demonstrate...

Many of humankind's myths do contain the kind of absurdity you might expect from a "B-movie".

[A pause. That amusement starts to settle into... simple attempt to sell thoughtfulness. That hand starts to run down and back up, repeatedly, softly and slowly...]

What is this a sign of, however, other than that humanity's fears are not all rational?

[He cocks his head a bit.]

Personally... I can understand being frightened by the thought of a weapon-wielding dog that has stolen my axe.

[You sure don't sound uncomfortable, boyo.]
zackthekiller: (Watch the fire rise)

[personal profile] zackthekiller 2017-11-11 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Zack looks kind of unnerved... Offended, really. He's pretty sure this guy is one of those sick creeps who probably gets off on this junk.]

Yeah, who wouldn't? But what the hell would a dog do with an axe?! Who even owns those anymore?

[Getting to the more important questions then.]

[personal profile] fauxlore 2017-11-13 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, that's a little strong...

A little.

But in any case! Korekiyo is unfazed! He isn't being told to stop, now, is he...]

Those in rural communities.

[Without a beat missed. Almost casual. A quick pinch and fidget at the chain on his coat before he lets his arms fall folded.]

People such as farmers and woodcutters...

[Eyes shutting again - focus as the thoughts wind out.]

Perhaps they would do it to cause mischief - a tale told in frustration by those people when they would misplace their axes, in the spirit of tales of creatures that steal the oil out of lamps or fish from fishermen's nets; these, too exist in lore, as examples.

Perhaps they would use them to kill, in excuses made for unexplained deaths or unsolved murders.

[His head falls cocked again. A little smile under his mask, as his eyes open again. Holds a hand out - not quite a shrug, but at least a "then again..." after that last note.]

Or... perhaps they would use them simply as humans would, in countries where trees were found left with gashes made by animals.

It isn't impossible that they would do all three of these things -- allowing for such a story to run deeper, and receive more perceived credence.
zackthekiller: (The fuck is that?)

Good job, you broke him.

[personal profile] zackthekiller 2017-11-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[... Holy crap this guy is smart.]

[Then again, by the look of confusion on Zack's face, it seems that a lot of people might be smarter than him.]

[But gezus, who the hell can just ramble on about this kinda stuff for ages? Does this guy have no other hobbies than to learn about why stories exist? Does he even have a life?]

[Zack attempts to rationalize all that info in his brain, but he only fustrates himself trying to do that.]

.... So, why should we be caring about this again?

[When Aramat washed up on shore she expected to be alone but nearby she spots a young man on the beach with her... very young and slim with what looks to be long silky hair. He's just huddled there in the sand and water whispering to himself.]

Excuse me?

[She says it gently, because who knows where the man came from and she doesn't feel like fighting for her life on this beach. He looks... interesting.]

[personal profile] fauxlore 2017-11-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Definitely not too soft for him to hear - he seizes for a moment, hugs himself tightly, I'm not ready yet, Sister, help me, I need you...

And then her voice again, and those arms become hers...]

Don't be afraid. This woman wishes to speak with you. I know that you can collect yourself...

Be
strong, my love. My little brother... I will be here forever...

[...And then they're both his again. His hold on each of his arms starts to... loosen...

As he whispers...]

I know...

I know...

[A long, shivering breath in. And then out, as his arms fall into his lap...

Opens his eyes.

Turns them up to the woman. Tension in his brow and his tone, eyes wet and glassy, sweating bullets through the seawater sticking to his face, but manages -- ]

... -- Yes -- ...?

[He -- knows he still doesn't sound entirely gathered, but... that'll change... that'll change, he'll get ahold of himself...]
scalpedsociety: (or are songs of earth your choice)

[personal profile] scalpedsociety 2017-11-14 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Aramat hesitates to speak again, because the boy wraps his arms around himself, and she hears murmurs. Whatever he's going through, it's not a wise idea to disturb it.

But he speaks out loud to her, and that a good sign at least.]

Yes, do you need any help?

[With walking, she means. With the smell and the atmosphere, it's best that she go to the nearby town not alone. Who knows what they would find?]
neigh_sayer: (hey hey you you)

HEY HEY

[personal profile] neigh_sayer 2017-11-12 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, something Kiyo doesn't know about? Color me surprised!

[Not the person he was addressing, but Kokichi pops up behind Kiyo to interrupt, grinning his liar's grin wide.]

I've seen them, you know. But of course I would have, running an evil organization means I keep all the tabs on all the hot new monsters!

YO, YO, PINOCCHIO

[personal profile] fauxlore 2017-11-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ -- And that voice hits him with a jolt of tension like a shock to the back, he freezes and turns and --

There's a momentary faraway yet deep-burning look in his eyes, like he's just seen the ghost of a rival who beat him in a duel, but then he --

No, his brain re-fixes itself first.

...Stay calm, Korekiyo. You said you'd be with your friends after death, didn't you? Well, here one of them is...!

Face the music.

His arms... wrap tight around him. His eyebrows knit together, what the heck is he even bracing himself for, with the... smile unseen behind his mask half-polite and half-wry.]

Ah?

How interesting.

A "new" monster... This would explain why I have neither read nor heard of them.

In the interest of academic curiosity, Kokichi... Would you care to regale my companion and I with what you know of them?

[RRRRELUCTANTLY letting go of himself to extend an arm out to the lady who he approached with his comment, turning to more clearly indicate her, fidgets a couple of times with the brim of his cap.]

She seems just as intrigued as I.

[What the hell is happening all of a sudden is more like it, with 'er throwing a couple of looks somewhere between taken aback and stunned and suddenly gravely suspicious between the two fellas...]
neigh_sayer: (DO U LIKE ME Y/N)

EEEEY

[personal profile] neigh_sayer 2017-11-14 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
[they are besties, clearly!! zero lowkey disgust here, no way. but Kokichi is certainly not one to turn away from an audience, and he happily slides himself between the two, as if they were a trio of acquaintances, eyes sparkling up at the woman.]

You betcha! You see, the name is a lie itself. Axehounds have nothing to do with dogs, but more the slobbering, lumbering oafs that wield the blade. They roam the woods, posing as friendly lumberjacks who'll happily lead any lost travelers in the woods to safety. But once a person turns their back?

WHAM!

[He makes an exaggerated chopping motion, and grins a bit too wide at both of them.]

It's off with your heads!

Neeheehee, pretty scary, huh? It's always unsettling when a person doesn't turn out to be the helpful person you think they are under that friendly mask. Right, Kiyo?
