TEST DRIVE MEME

TEST DRIVE MEME
Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: You've just been released from the hospital in Vandare and no one really seems to know what to do with you. The locals offer polite advice but don't seem to want to spend a lot of time with you. You and the other new arrivals stick out like sore thumbs, so perhaps one will spot you wandering about town.

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together.

SCENARIO THREE: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

Air travel. That's enough to evoke an odd, thoughtful pause of recognition, and a very hesitant test. "Air travel? Airships?"

It was one of those things he was still trying to get used to; nobody else he'd run into seemed familiar with air travel on any real level, even as "something that other country does", and the locals definitely didn't deal in it.

Unfortunately, it's a test that Astrid fails, looking at Kain has grown a second head in the last few seconds. "Ships...go in the water," she explains, speaking slightly slower than before from a mix of confusion and caution. She's also realizing that she's fucked up a bit -- her mode of transport was seen as a thing of terror for plenty of people.

"Some of us -- my people, I mean -- ride dragons. They've become our friends." And now she misses having Stormfly greet her in the mornings, or even just getting to feed her chicken. She loved chicken.

So he knows the Red Wings are a recent invention, that airships are something new to his world even, and that it was an adaptation of ocean-going ships.

That's less important right now, since there's something a lot more personal dinged, enough for the calm sort of mostly-neutral to crack wistful. "Dragons." Something his nation hadn't had in too long. "We - my order used to; my father's might've been the last one in the nation. I was the first of my family in generations to not grow up alongside a hatchling."

That's not an object of terror, that's getting adopted into camp as practically family.

"You -- "

Astrid holds her breath, not quite able to believe it. Until Hiccup, she'd never heard of anyone riding dragons. But this man claimed that it had happened for generations, where he was from... She eases, shoulders sagging a little as it all sinks in.

"I'm sorry... That must have been hard on you."

He watched the fire distantly; it was strange, for something that important to've been out of his mind for so long with everything else going on between there and here. "We'll manage. They're not gone from the world, even if it takes years to find them again." Decades, or searching other continents entirely, it was starting to look like. "We were the only ones on our world to work with them that closely."

The spirits called by summoners weren't the same thing, even if the lines blurred sometimes. He glanced up sideways; there was an odd comfort knowing there was somewhere else out there that not only wouldn't call him crazy for referring to dragons as real, but had been working with them. "Could you tell me about your home?"

The thought still makes her heart ache. Now that she's got Stormfly, she can't imagine not seeing dragons for years. She'd been devastated at Snoggletog, when they'd left, but even that hadn't lasted long.

Astrid takes a deep breath, absently fumbling with the cord around her arms. "It's called Berk," she allows. "It's an island, and except for a few other tribes, we don't see very many people. That might change -- it's easier to get places, with dragons." She pauses a moment before continuing in a more exasperated tone. "The forest there is way better than this one."

A taunting giggle replies.

"I don't think it's hard to be better than here." He rolled his eyes with a glare at the fog. "But it doesn't sound bad at all." The island villages always did seem pretty quiet; like it took longer for whatever plagued the continents to get there. "Give it a few generations and you'll have half the world mapped, I bet."

Which was both encouraging and vaguely distant; he half expected that if they weren't on his world, they probably weren't anywhere that would be found on hers, either.
