1. Post a top level for your character/muselist and link to songs that remind you of them, either in general or specifically in Ryslig! Get as fancy as you like - include lyrics and explanations if you feel like it. (You can have the links in the top level itself or reply to it with them, whatever strikes your fancy).
2. If you're not the playlist-making type, feel free to request other people send you songs they think would fit your character. Crowdsource!
3. Respond to other people to delight in/make fun of their taste in music and suggest songs for their character or your CR.
4. DANCE PARTY

Ink's Dinguses
Jake Chambers | The Dark Tower
So fun story, when Jake Chambers died (the first time) one of his clearest memories of what happened was that a KISS song was playing not too far away. Stephen King never says which one, so I picked the most fitting one that came out before '77.
2. Are You Dead - Rainbows Are Free
It's 2010 but shhhh it sounds like 70s stoner rock and that's what matters. Pretty self-explanatory lyrics-wise.
3. Son + Father - The Dear Hunter
My very favorite Jake song. Fathers and father figures are incredibly important to him and his story, as is the theme of death and rebirth. It's very much a song for him and Roland, and in Ryslig it became a song for him and Ford.
4. Bottom of the River - Delta Rae
Another Jake and Roland song, specifically dealing with book one and Jake's second death (tl;dr long drop into cold water).
5. Ragdoll Physics - Diablo Swing Orchestra
Are you sensing a theme here abt parents and complicated parental relationships and parental betrayal because oh boy here's another one. This is the song I used for his icon keywords as well. 'We were nothing but a waste of your time and space' is such a rad line.
6. Demon Host - Timber Timbre
More death more murder more demons standard Dark Tower tbh
7. White Hidden Fire - Weird Owl
Started out as yet another not-really-from-the-70s-stoner-rock song, and kind of slowly transitioned into a Jake and Ford song. Ford is obviously the weird owl.
8. The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull - Earth
A super rad instrumental that is coincidentally named after a plot-important riddle that Jake happens to be very fond of: "Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness!" To which the answer goes, "Samson and a lion in attack, and Samson climb up on the lion's back. Well, you've read about lions killin' men their paws, but Samson put his hands round the lion's jaws! He rode that lion 'til the beast fell dead, and all the bees made honey in the lion's head."
9. Infinitesimal - Mother Mother
Jake 'literally saw the entirety of all that is in the entire multiverse inside a single rose once' Chambers
10. Heroes - Måns Zelmerlöw
Yeah it's Eurovision what do you want from me. Another Jake and Ford song.
11. The Rifle's Spiral - The Shins
Aaaaaand another Jake and Roland song, though it covers the entirety of Jake's experience in book one.
12. Railroad Track - Willy Moon
Trains are a big thematic thing for Jake, and I did pull him from the middle of a train crash when I brought him to Ryslig, so this feels like an appropriate song to close with.

No More from Into the Woods, in which a man trying to flee the problems in his life at the expense of his newborn son is guilt-tripped by the ghost of his father who did literally the exact same thing.
EDIT: Holy shit I also found something that sums up Justine's feelings about being forced to feel an entire feeling, except minus any enthusiastic embrace of the feeling.
Being Alive from Company, about a guy with an incredibly cynical view of relationships.
Fiddleford Mcgucket | Gravity Falls
1. Country Roads - Pretty Lights
It's dubstep Country Roads get off my back
2. Windows Generations - crocz
I have like five computer sounds remixes on this playlist but I'm gifting you with the best one.
3. Bluebells - Patrick Wolf
Did you want the obligatory memory problems/downward spiral that Ryslig has only made worse song? Here it is.
4. X Amount of Words - Blue October
I'm sorry both my playlists have a lot of songs relating to Ford Pines but in my defense Ford Pines deserves a song here so here's the Troubled Friendship Ballad.
5. Running Out Of Steam - The Cog is Dead
Did you think there wouldn't be at least one steampunk song on this playlist because I mean really. I made sure to pick a sad one.
6. A Nervous Tic Motion Of The Head To The Left - Andrew Bird
'And by all accounts you really should have died' is this man's life in a nutshell at this point honestly
7. Garden of Eden - Rob Cantor
Did you think we could go too much longer without a god cult song? Because oh boy I've got god cult songs up the wazoo. This one is relatively upbeat. The others are not.
8. Patron Saint Hunter - Timber Timbre
What did I tell you about the other cult songs not being as upbeat?
9. A Tap Dancer's Dilemma - Diablo Swing Orchestra
And here we go from 'not upbeat' to 'zealous insanity', which he hasn't hit in-game yet. I'm just getting prepared since lbr it's coming up on us pretty quick.
10. Need You Now - Cut Copy
The last three are going to be Marco songs and you can all fucking fight me. Here's the upbeat 80s-ish sounding one with really sad lyrics.
11. Until The Night Is Over - Timber Timbre
Did you expect cute ship music? I'm sorry. 'It's a miracle babe but it ain't no fun' tbh.
12. Like The Rain - Clint Black
This is the country one don't listen to it it's Too Country. I mean to be fair I could have used the other country ship song, which is about 500 times more country, so really I spared you some grief by not including it.

Usagi's Muses! (complete with list)
Carbon who plays AM
Gesang der Jünglinge (Song of the Youths) by Karlheinz Stockhausen. It's one of the creepiest pieces I've ever heard, number one. Number two, it's an attempt to create an electronic mass, which highly ties into AM's biblical imagery. Three, it's a biblical story from the Book of Daniel about three youths being thrown into a furnace.
Symphony 1 "Titan", Movement IV: Stürmisch bewegt – Energisch (Stormily agitated – Energetic) by Gustav Mahler. While the entire symphony itself is a programmatic work, it's the last movement that really calls AM to my mind. Mahler's programmatic notes say that it opens with "the sudden outburst of a wounded heart." And if you hear it, it's a very angry outburst. It is also supposed to invoke the torments of hell. However, it has a very triumphant ending, which kind of takes away from how I relate it to AM, but oh well. It's good enough.
Eh that's all I got for now. Every time I try to create a playlist for AM, I get very distracted.

On another music meme, I had linked Creeper by the Islands regarding the shade when he hunts or being vengeful towards someone. I might as well add Holding Your Absence by Hammock since he misses some of his close friends (and I've been listening to it a lot as I work on a log which involves one of those friends who are gone).

Jason Compson | The Sound and the Fury
1. Okkervil River - "Missing Children"
kids grow up and kids get numb
2. Radical Face - "Black Eyes"
my heart will be blacker than your eyes when I'm through with you
"What are you doing here," I says. "I thought you promised here you wouldn't come back. I thought you had more sense than that...I'm not surprised, though. I wouldn't put anything past you. You don't mind anybody. You don't give a damn about anybody." --Jason Compson, The Sound and the Fury (c. 1911)
3. Laura Marling - "You're No God"
you will never leave this place / you will always feel alone / you will never feel quite clean in this new skin that you have grown
4. Torres - "Honey"
I was thinking about telling you what you done to me
"Nothing," Jason said, "Not anything. I wouldn't lay my hand on her. The bitch that cost me a job, the one chance I ever had to get ahead, that killed my father and is shortening my mother's life every day and made my name a laugh stock in the town. I won't do anything to her," he said. "Not anything."
5. Cold Specks - "Old Knives"
every old knife rusting in my back / I'll drive into yours
6. Patty Griffin - "Little God"
they say time is running out and you don't know what to do / and I hear them talk about another place without you
7. Aimee Mann - "Guys Like Me"
guys like me, we all vow to become / clear and free of the fife and the drum / and block the circulation 'til we're all completely numb
Talking about peace on earth good will towards all and not a sparrow can fall to earth. But what does he care how thick they get, he hasn't got anything to do; what does he care what time it is. He pays no taxes, he doesn't have to see his money going every year to have the courthouse clock cleaned to where it'll run. They had to pay a man forty-five dollars to clean it. --Jason Compson (c. 1928)
8. Fleet Foxes - "Helplessness Blues"
I was raised up believing I was somehow unique
You know if I had my way, you'd have an office of your own to go to, and hours that became a Bascomb. Because you are a Bascomb, despite your name. --Caroline Compson (c. 1928)
9. Neko Case - "The Next Time You Say Forever"
it's a dirty fallow feeling to be the dangling ceiling from where the roof came crashing down / peeling in the heat, vanish in the rain / the next time you say forever I will punch you in your face
10. Electric Six - "I Don't Like You"
you really don't seem ready for the drop of the other shoe
11. Porches - "Car"
I pull up the car and I let it run / it takes us away from where we are / oh, what a machine
It's a good thing I dont have any more ties than a pigeon, I'll say that. --Jason Compson, (c. 1928)
12. Matthew Good - "Alert Status Red"
you know I'm jealous of how you can just turn them off / those bad ideas that feel so soft
"Jason, what were you doing with three thousand dollars hid in the house?" --Jefferson Sheriff, (c. 1928)
13. The Mountain Goats - "No Children"
I hope I cut myself shaving / I hope it bleeds all day long
"I wish I were dead. I wish we were all dead." Then she ran. We heard her run up the stairs. Then a door slammed.
"That's the first sensible thing she ever said," I says. --Jason Compson (c. 1928)
14. Natalie Maines - "Mother (Pink Floyd Cover)"
of course Mama's going to help build the wall
Jason he has never given me one moment's sorrow since I first held him in my arms I knew then that he was to be my joy and my salvation...that's it go on criticize Jason accuse me of setting him to watch her as if it were a crime while your own daughter can I know you don't love him that you wish to believe faults against him you never have yes ridicule him as you always have Maury you cannot hurt me any more than your children already have and then I'll be gone and Jason with no one to love him shield him from this I look at him every day dreading to see this Compson blood behinning to show in him at last...let me have Jason and you keep the others they're not my flesh and blood like he is strangers nothing of mine and I am afraid of them I can take Jason and go where we're not known I'll go down on my knees and pray for the absolution of my sins that he may escape this curse try to forget that the others ever were --Caroline Compson (c. 1909)
15. Josh Ritter - "Rattling Locks"
there ain't nothing new about the world that I ain't learned from just standing here in this spot
16. Sharon Van Etten - "Pay My Debts"
I still remain / then you led me to believe that was what you wanted
I don't want to make a killing; save that to suck in the smart gamblers with. I just want an even chance to get my money back. And once I've done that they can bring all Beale Street and all bedlam in here and two of them can sleep in my bed and another one can have my place at the table too. --Jason Compson (c. 1928)
17. Colleen Green - "Grind My Teeth"
everything is a stressor / fragile teeth bear the pressure / of a generation lost and failing / my teeth crumble, my face melting
18. Amanda Palmer - "Runs in the Family"
me? well I'm well, well I mean I'm in hell / well, I still have my health / at least that's what they tell me / if wellness is this, what in hell's name is sickness? / but business is business and business runs in the family / we tend to bruise easily, bad in the blood
because how the hell can I do anything right, with that dam family and her not making any effort to control her nor any of them, like that time when she happened to see one of them kissing Caddy and all the next day she went around the house in a black dress and a veil and even Father couldn't get her to say a word except crying and saying her little daughter was dead and Caddy about fifteen then...Blood, I says, governors and generals. It's a damn good thing we never had any kinds and presidents; we'd all be down there at Jackson chasing butterflies. --Jason Compson, (c. 1928)
19. Grimes - "Kill V. Maim"

"Do you think I need any man's help to stand on my feet?" I says. --Jason Compson (c. 1928)
20. Daughter - "Numbers"

21. Destroyer - "Midnight Meets the Rain"
you make a plea for me to come to my senses / just like the time before / and the time before that
I'm glad I haven't got the sort of conscience I've got to nurse like a sick puppy all the time. --Jason Compson, (c. 1928)
22. Patrick Wolf - "The Bachelor"
I will never marry / marry at all / no one will wear my silver ring
Like I say if I was to get married you'd go up like a balloon and you know it and she says I want you to be happy and have a family of your own not to slave away your life for us. But I'll be gone soon and you'll never find a woman who is worthy of you and I says yes I could. You'd get right up out of your grave you know you would. I says no thank you I have all the women I can take care of now if I married a wife she'd probably turn out to be a hophead or something. That's all we lack in this family, I says. --Jason Compson, (c. 1928)
23. Deerhunter - "Snakeskin"
I was born already nailed to the cross
[Jason's irrationality] is a significant, usually ignored, side of this pathetic man who spends his Good Friday crucifying himself to crosses he alone provides. --Donald M. Kartinganer, "The Meaning of Form in The Sound and the Fury"
24. Hop Along - "Texas Funeral"
I followed all the rules. I wasn't the one to turn the screw so hard.
...to him all the rest of the town and the world and the human race too except himself were Compsons, inexplicable yet quite predictable in that they were in no sense whatsoever to be trusted... --William Faulkner, The Compson Appendix (1945)
Wendy Corduroy | Gravity Falls
While I'm on this bus... feel free to look at that playlist and go 'Why is x on there?' And I will explain, or 'Why isn't y on there?' And I will fix that haha.
Jotaro Kujo | Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
And if you get knocked down you must begin again,
So pull the wool off your eyes, close your mouth, cover your cries,
They'll be so fucking surprised when you're still breathing alive.
Honestly, if you listen to only one song on this entire list, listen to this one. For me it's kind of the quintessential Stardust Crusaders Jotaro song, and frankly I could've quoted the entirety of the lyrics as my reasoning for why because all of them are all hells of on point.
2. The Phoenix (Fast Version) → Fall Out Boy
One maniac at a time we will take it back
You know time crawls on when you're waiting for the song to start
So dance alone to the beat of your heart
Hey, young blood, doesn't it feel like our time is running out?
How many "time" jokes can I make on a single playlist? A LOT OF TIME JOKES. I like this song in particular as a nod to Jotaro's fight against the big bad of Stardust Crusaders — it's a battle he fights pretty much entirely alone, with a lot of orange-yellow color and fire imagery, that involves a lot of very literal "time running out", and at least one instance where rather like a phoenix, Jotaro is assumed to be dead and, well...take a wild guess.
3. Invincible → Pat Benatar
We've got the right to be angry,
What are we running for?
When there's nowhere we can run to anymore,
We can't afford to be innocent,
Stand up and face the enemy,
It's a do or die situation,
We will be invincible
A song for the Stardust Crusaders generally, which consisted of an old man, a fortune-teller, a boisterous French guy, two Japanese high school students, and a dog. "We can't afford to be innocent", indeed.
4. Sophia → The Cruxshadows
You shall be a star unto the night
You will find hope alive among the hopeless
That is your purpose to this life
//
Do not injustice to another
Defend the weak and innocent
Let truth and honor always guide you
Let courage find a life within
Stand up when no one else is willing
Act not in hatred or in spite
Be to this world as a perfect knight
Even if it means your life
Here I am, alive among the injured and the dead
HOW MUCH STAR IMAGERY CAN I CRAM INTO A SINGLE PLAYLIST. But no, really I like this song a lot for a couple of reasons, one being that the Star in the tarot is supposed to signify renewed hope and inspiration, and in a way Jotaro ends up being kind of the one person that everyone stakes all of their hopes on, leaving him to singlehandedly pull through for all of them. Thus is the nature of the shounen protagonist.
"Here I am, alive among the injured and the dead" is an incredibly poignant and standout line in terms of his canonpoint, as well — because literally all of his friends (and most of his enemies) are one of the latter two things by the time the big bad is defeated.
5. Four Minutes → Madonna Feat. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland
But if I die tonight, at least I can say I did what I wanted to do
Tell me, how 'bout you?
//
Time is waiting
(We only got four minutes to save the world)
No hesitating
TAKE A SHOT, IT'S ANOTHER TIME JOKE. As far as Jotaro's future is concerned, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" is a pretty apt way of putting it; a lot of the choices he makes are rooted in a willingness to trade empathy and emotional availability to the people he cares about in exchange for doing what he thinks will practically keep those people safe. Funny thing about fixating on saving the world, though — it sometimes makes you miss out on those other important things, like REMEMBERING YOU'RE SOMEBODY'S HUSBAND AND SOMEBODY ELSE'S FATHER YOU COMPLETE DISASTER.
6. Waiting For Superman → Daughtry
He got stuck at the Five and Dime saving the day.”
//
She’s talking to angels, counting the stars
Making a wish on a passing car
She’s dancing with strangers, she’s falling apart
Waiting for Superman to pick her up in his arms, yeah,
In his arms, yeah,
She’s waiting for Superman...
...to lift her up and take her anywhere
Show her love and flying through the air
Save her now before it’s too late tonight
Oh, at the speed of light
Speaking of which, here's a song for Jolyne, who had to put up with a hell of a lot of waiting around for her dad to show up for her (and often he never did), because he was off somewhere else, saving the day.
7. My Own Worst Enemy → Robert Pettersson feat. Helena Josefsson
Am I starting to become what I was sent here to destroy
In the mirror I see you staring back at me
//
I am my own worst enemy
Somebody save me from myself
I am my own worst enemy
It's like I'm fighting someone else
As Ryslig's Rohan so aptly put it in one thread of theirs, Jotaro himself is "the only enemy he ever seems to lose to". He has a lot of potential to be self-destructive and act in really unhealthy ways because his experiences often drive him to prioritize the safety of the people he cares about above and beyond anything else, and many of his traumas have left him with a lot of...not great implications about himself. Namely, without getting into overt spoilers, there's something that occurs in Stardust Crusaders that has left Jotaro wondering whether or not he's more similar to the canon's big bad than he's really comfortable with accepting.
8. Parachute → Ingrid Michaelson
You are your own worst enemy, you'll never win the fight
Just hold onto me, I'll hold onto you
It's you and me up against the world, it's you and me
I don't believe anything, don't trust anyone any more
But I believe you when you say we're never gonna fall
Hand behind my neck, arm around my waist
Never let me hit the ground, you'll never let me crash (Down)
I don't need a parachute, baby, if I've got you
A song for the people who care about him; this is pretty much the talk he needs in order to start letting himself connect with another person on an emotional level, and what the relationship that grows out of that connection is likely to look like.
9. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been → Relient K
I'm sorry that it took so long for me to change.
I'm ready to be sure I never become that way again
'cause who I am hates who I've been.
Who I am hates who I've been.
I talk to absolutely no one.
Couldn't keep to myself enough.
And the things bottled inside have finally begun
To create so much pressure that I'll soon blow up.
I heard the reverberating footsteps
Synching up to the beating of my heart,
And I was positive that unless I got myself together,
I would watch me fall apart.
And I can't let that happen again
A SONG FOR MY RP GOALS, ALWAYS. How about let's try averting the disaster that is everything Jotaro ends up being in later installments of canon and maybe actually address some of his shit and find healthier ways of coping with it. HOW ABOUT THAT.
10. Lucky Strike → Maroon 5
So sick of saying yes sir, yes sir
You're such an instigator, you wanna play the game
Take it or leave it, that's her, that's her
And I can't wait another minute
I have no explanation for this one other than that I wanted to end this soundtrack on a fun note and this is a song that makes me think of Jotaro every time I hear it, so. Enjoy!

The dreamwidth page will include a link to a youtube playlist once I set it up!
I am always interested in new music, so feel free to throw songs at me for either of my boys. :D
+Ryslig-specific bonus tracks
1. Breath Of Life | Florence + The Machine
whose side am I on? Whose side am I--? / and the fever began to spread / from my heart down to my legs / but the room is so quiet, oh / and although I wasn't losing my mind / it was a chorus so sublime / and the room is too quiet, oh
2. Gasoline | Halsey
you can't wake up / this is not a dream / you're part of a machine / you are not a human being / with your face all made up / living on a screen / low on self-esteem / so you run on gasoline / I think there's a flaw in my code / these voices won't leave me alone / my heart is gold and my hands are cold.
3. Help, I'm Alive | Metric
I tremble / they're gonna eat me alive / if I stumble / they're gonna eat me alive / can you hear my heart beating like a hammer / beating like a hammer? / help, I'm alive / my heart keeps beating like a hammer / hard to be soft / tough to be tender.

The walls are humming
with a soft suspicious song,
suggesting that I've been mistaken all along,
but the words become deformed
while the notes fall and distort.

Sometimes I slide away silently
I slowly lose myself over and over

5. Cruel Reminder - Heatmiser
Sick of having my heart right all over my face and the backseat drivers taking my place
Got me staring at you eyes dropped like lead, it's a cruel reminder it's all in my head
You may also have noticed I haven't bothered to put these in any kind of coherent order. SORRY.
6. Painless - Mae
Striking the chords for only me
There was a coursing all through my veins
Another chance to get away, oh
What I have noticed is that like half of my Marco playlist works for Ryslig Marco specifically anyway, because there are just certain universal truths about this guy.
7. Lilium - Nadia Carolina Castillo
Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam
Et lingua eius loquetur indicium
AND THAT'S ALL FOR NOW, FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST THINGS
im so sorry to everyone who has to witness this

Cain Hargreaves | Earl Cain Series
It does have spoilers for the end of the series, but I'm playing Cain from a canonpoint where he's essentially a walking spoiler himself, so if you've got CR with him you probably already know them. Haha.
Nothing Ryslig-specific yet, but I would welcome any suggestions!
