Fids is probably the only person Ford truly respects on a personal level. He had Stan's constant companionship when he was a child and lost that pretty quickly when shit went south after high school. Fiddleford was the first and in my opinion the only person he ever considered a "friend". Since he's such a solitary creature who kept himself locked in his dorm 90% of the time, it was a huge change in HIS brain to end up letting anyone in. The fact that someone else was as dedicated to science despite being a hipPIE NERDLORD WITH BAD PANTS AND BELL-SLEEVED SHIRTS, he could be eye-level with him at any time he wanted to be. Remember, he was the person Ford went to when he wanted to make the portal due to his prowess. To me, that means that they still had that connection.
The problem lies in how he kind of used him for a lot of things. It's elaborated upon that Ford conned him into helping him with his WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE research in addition to having him do more technical things with the portal. As much as he considers Fids his only actual "friend" he still sees him as a tool. Whiiiiich honestly is just a Ford Thing. He utilizes people who have potential. It's like the most backhanded compliment ever but deal with him
Jake is a special case. The second he met a kid who seemed street smart and had a way about him that reminded him of himself through the fact that he was not as naïve as a little kid should be, he latched on to him. He is still in that in-between phase where he asks himself if (like Fids) he wants to use him for a higher purpose OR to groom him like he did with Dipper but on a slightly less selfish scale. He really thinks that Jake is more than he appears. He appreciates Jake's thirst for learning-- wanting to learn how to draw and observe things. The paternal figure Ford lacked when he was growing up is shaping up to be the opposite on his end. Jake also lacks a paternal figure he was close to-- and the one he didn't really have growing up if I remember how shitty his real dad was. I think in the beginning when our last Dipper didn't jump in with the Hero Complex made him more prone to favoring Jake as his protégé... When he feels more like a son than a protégé. It's kind of weird.
the long and short of it is that jake needs to be protected and brings out a lot in Ford that he hasn't had the chance to see in himself
