NAME: Ket CHARACTERS: Toshizou Hijikata (Peacemaker Kurogane edition) TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHARACTERS: Hijikata is from 1864. He's a big, scowly, chain-smoking, intimidating not-actually-a-samurai who clawed his way to the top with a combination of ruthless pragmatism and a plotty, scheme-y sort of intelligence, and he's not about to let the circumstances in Ryslig keep him from his goals if he can help it... But don't be fooled. Under all that, he's kind of a teddy bear. He wants to keep people safe (by whatever means necessary), and enjoys tea, writing terrible poetry, and spending time with his boo and his friends. WHAT YOUR CHARACTER(S) WILL BE DOING: Hijikata owns a 24-hour general store in Bavan, but he's leaving that to his employees a lot for the moment. The main thing he's doing right now is working on shoring up the defenses of the fortress he got from Tikbalang, and scoping out who has what loyalties, god-wise. He's actively (if very carefully) seeking neutrals to form alliances with. He has two spies reporting to him on Fourth God follower goings-on, and would love to get a set of eyes inside the Fog God's camp as well... Basically, the plotting-and-scheming habit dies hard. SCENARIOS YOU'RE INTERESTED IN: -Young and/or energetic and/or obnoxious people: Bother him! He will glare and grump and make increasingly distraught "why me?" faces, it's fun. -Other quiet intellectual types: quiet bonding time with tea and books? -Avowedly neutral parties: HIJIKATA WANTS YOU to secretly build up resources for protecting and providing for other neutrals and/or plot against the gods! He's not getting too aggressive yet, focusing for now on defense and trying to create a coordinated, communicative, more efficient group of those who refuse to join the gods than on offense. -Fourth God followers: if you want Yamato or Horikawa to doxx you to Hijikata, let their players or me know! I will not assume he knows anything about anyone without their explicit permission, and nothing is likely to come of it too soon, since he's just gathering intelligence for now. -Fellow plotty, schemey, intelligence-focused types: A lot of possibilities here! Sharing information and collaborating on plans? Talking careful, half-coded circles around each other? Weird, mutually suspicious mind games? Some combination of the above? Hit me up! -I'm always a slut for fight scenes. (Note that while I'm okay with Hijikata losing and/or getting badly hurt, he is a trained, highly-skilled fighter who's comfortable with his monster powers and has a canonical tendency to do really well in no-holds-barred, to-the-death sorts of fights, so I'm unlikely to have him killed unless it involves being outnumbered, fighting someone very skilled, and/or a very clever trap. Talk to me, though, and we can always see!) -Conversely, I'm always a slut for weird friendship-focused slice of life. Souji's habit of adopting weird teenagers seems to have finally rubbed off on him. So I guess if you have a weird, probably-young person who could benefit from a grumpy mentor type or a couple of adoptive samurai-dads, Hijikata's your man! -People who are wrong on the internet. His lack of tolerance for fools and newness to computers can combine in some fun ways, negative-CR-wise. ANYTHING ELSE: Occasional trigger warnings for depression, terminal illness (tuberculosis), poorly-handled grief / survivor's guilt, violence, signs of PTSD, passing internal-monologue references to torture (just the once) and sexual violence (not against him personally), the slightly misogynistic dickery of his teenage years, and probably some other stuff. Most of it can be avoided if you let me know to, pretty much! Also, does smoking trigger anyone? He... he does that a lot.
The only trigger I'd ask people to avoid when threading with me is animal abuse. I can handle the rest.
EST time zone (New York time), and a fairly normal sleep schedule! No job right now, so tagging gets done fairly randomly throughout the day and evening.
If you want to plot anything or just chat, I'm always happy to add people at cognitiveleague.

Yes, absolutely! A lot of Hijikata's role back in Japan involved coordinating the spies working for his faction and leading the group's strategic development, so he has a really good appreciation of the importance of good intelligence-gathering strategies. I know we've got them talking in the Advent log, but I definitely think there's some potential there for future CR :D
Sorry we ended up dropping the ball on the cleanup thread, Gundam's player wasn't getting notifs even with the thread tracked, and I got super busy with work. orz BUT I am down for continuing cr with these two if you are? Kuzuryuu is not only team neutral 4lyfe, but he's also kind of a weird teenager who could probably use a mentor or two. And while he's not exactly the intellectual type, he is the ruthless, pragmatic, occasionally scheme-y type.
Oh, it's ok! We can just handwave that, these things happen.
And Hijikata's more interested in Team Neutral-loyalty and schemey, pragmatic intelligence than he is in book-smarts (as much as he likes bad poetry books), and seriously has a habit of accidentally becoming weird teenagers' mentor, so I'd love to see how their CR could turn out :)
IV and Hijikata have talked some on the network, but when IV isn't using his "heavenstrings" persona, he definitely falls into the young/obnoxious type. Would you be interested in them having that as another side to their CR? I think it would be pretty amusing to reveal the teenager that seems to have taken to trying to irritate him is the same guy who is frequently found information fishing on the network.
Alternatively, he is a Fog God follower specifically only for the strength perk and has no real loyalty there. If Hijikata wants a spy there, IV is up to the task.
On the one hand, he'd be cautious trusting someone he doesn't know well with something that big, especially considering that he doesn't want his cover blown and the god followers to know he's spying on them.
...On the other, he really wants to get someone spying on the Fog God.
Perhaps we can start with IV bugging him in person, and see if it moves towards that direction eventually?
Completely understandable. If it doesn't work out to make sense ICly, that's fine with me; there's no sense angling for something and forcing it through when it seems threads aren't going that way naturally.
I'm fine with starting with that, and seeing if it makes sense from there.
We already have a thread at Advent but I'd definitely be interested in getting Athelstan in on neutral things! He's very firmly #teamjesus and uninterested in siding with either god (he kind of thinks they're both devils OOPS). While he's not super important or anything, he's very persuasive and a lot of people like him / respect his opinion, so. Maybe an asset? :'D I'm sure the conversation could steer toward allegiances at some point.
Hijikata isn't even really sure what people's deal with Jesus even is -- Christianity was only recently even legalized in Japan, for him -- but he's firmly against both of the gods on grounds of "they're clearly both manipulative, bloodthirsty, controlling us for their own purposes, and questionably sane at best", so they can at least agree on being avowedly neutral!
And hey, a likable person that people listen to is definitely a good asset to have!
LOL yes I love the differences in historical characters, he's from like 8th century England/Scandinavia and hadn't even heard of Japan before Ryslig. #teamjesus is totally still #teamneutral tho because yes they can definitely agree there. He would totally help try to talk people into un-aligning.
Excellent on all counts! I do love contrasting different historical contexts. And Hijikata absolutely needs someone for that job who's a little better at... being persuasive gently than he is.
Neutrality, you say. Fang's 110% done with deities of all kinds, and would be all over this concept. She's even spent the last decade or so being as big of a thorn in a religious order's side as possible.
He was not convinced gods even existed back home, and didn't much care, but now there are gods and they are the worst and he hates them so much. So yes, I think they'd probably get along well if that came up!

I'm also enjoying their thread so far. Just. Immediately playing spy games.
Expect me to bug you more in the future.
