Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:
You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
The reserve date has been announced (it was changed to the 30th to allow a maximum number of people compared to a Friday).
Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.
Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.
Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.
SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...
SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.
SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.
[ It sounds a little wry, like there's an accusation there of way to assume that goes unsaid. But he does dutifully look over that drawing, and makes a cursory attempt to commit it to memory. ]
Much obliged, though! Now I'll be able to happily, knowingly correct people when they liken my eyes to cat eyes.
What do people keep for pets on your planet, then?
[He stays seated, legs braced against the sand, arms resting against his knees. It means the other man is standing over him, but hopefully he'll follow suit.]
[ He's happy to follow suit, and drops to a crouch next to him. He reaches a gloved hand to draw another picture next to the cat: something with six legs and a long, slinky body. ]
Rapposi, that's the most popular one to my race. Green eyes, and all four of them with round pupils.
No fur, but they're not slimy. [ He offers a shrug, and withdraws his hand to bat dirt off of the fingertip. ] Just skin. Charming things, if a bit spiteful. And cats, what about them?
We never had one, but, uh, furry, yeah. Kinda do their own things. If you want loyalty, go for a dog. They're kinda built the same, but they'll love you if you feed em.
[It occurs to him he doesn't know this man's name. Wiping his hand on his trousers, Jack offers it.]
Well there's some appeal, I always appreciate appreciation.
[ He finishes dusting himself off, and happily offers out a hand. He knows what to do with handshakes, he's been around enough humans. ]
Charmed, Jack! Vanadi de Vadarta, happily at your service. [ He cocks his head, a grin edging into place. ] At your... winged, possibly land-bound service.
[It's the first time he's met a de before. It seems worth noting, though he doesn't mention it out loud. Jack pulls a wry face as Vanadi grins and glances behind him, his wings fluttering again.]
[He did set himself up for that, he thinks, and stands much more slowly. Glancing behind him, he pulls a bit of a face.]
Just don't expect much, all right . . .
[But his wings begin fluttering again. It's a far more rapid fluttering, intense enough that the sand around him begins whirling. Still, he stays on the ground-- it isn't helped by the fact he keeps twisting around, trying to see.
Finally, slowly, he begins to rise-- just half an inch or so, but it still sparks a loud and joyful laugh.]
[The question breaks his concentration, which means his wings falter and he falls to the ground-- but it doesn't matter. He flew, even if it was only for half a minute, even if it was only an inch or so.]
Friggin' fantastic, that's how! Jesus, they actually work!
[He shouldn't be so quick to turn his back to someone he doesn't know, especially in a city like this. But Vanadi has been so nice, and anyway, if he does try to stab him, Jack's pretty sure he could take the guy on. He's so short, after all.
So he turns, showing off his wings, so terribly pleased that he forgets his embarrassment of them.]
[ If Vanadi thinks anything of this readiness to oblige him, it goes unremarked on. He just leans in closer, to trail one hand lightly down the closest edge of one of those wings. ]
Beautiful, really! I rather think you lucked out with your change.
[He suppress a shiver. What an odd feeling, both there and removed. Beneath Vanadi's fingers, Jack's wing stirs slightly, but he stays still.]
Yeah, could be worse. At least I don't eat nobody. 'S kinda girlish, but, you know, you're right, could be worse. You too, you know? Cat eyes ain't so bad, for all that.
Hm. [ His smile fades, going thoughtful. ] And fish don't have these eyes, do they?
[ He shifts, pulling up at the bottom hem of his shirt. It exposes a few things: scarred skin, an edge of metal, and a flourish of small, red gleaming scales. He watches Jack's face closely, despite his head tilted down toward himself, intent to see what the reaction will be. ]
Just wondering what the animal I'm meant to be equated with will be.
[His eyebrows raise, though it's more for the metal than anything else. Those scars look nasty, and he wonders what happened to Vanadi that he'd earned them. But he bites his tongue and focuses on the scales instead, two fingers brushing lightly against them.]
Huh.
[He tries to remember what creatures he's heard of.]
Maybe a mermaid. Or, you know, merman. Mer . . . elf? What are you, anyway?
[ No comment on the other sights shown off along with the scales. Vanadi appreciates that approach. He pushes his shirt back down and tugs it straight, casual and unbothered. Anyone familiar with the moods shown by his long ears would know pleased by the way they sweep back, though. ]
Kitrite. Merkitrite then, I suppose... and what is a mer, exactly?
[ Fish doesn't mean much to him, but there's a definite light of familiarity in his eyes when Jack moves onto the description. That doesn't sound so monstrous. ]
Webbing, yes — [ He points to his upper forearm, near to the elbow. ] And fins here, does that sound familiar?
Apparently! [ He smiles, genuinely pleased by the connection. ] They're attals to us — my best friend was one. Now that would be a bit awkward, to find myself suddenly a neighboring species!

Yeah, we'll see. I almost got it before.

Well, by all means, try it again! Don't let me detract from any experimentation.

Now, that is something! A land-based someone managing to fly all by themselves. Consider me duly impressed! How does it feel, my dear?

Certainly! Although — tell me, do cats come with scales?

[He says it because here, who knows?]
Mostly just fluff. What, you got scales goin' on?

[This is the guy who didn't know what a cat was, though, so he adds:]
They live in water, mostly, and I'm pretty sure they don't eat people. I think they get, you know, webbing--
