TEST DRIVE : MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
  • We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
  • Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
  • The reserve date has been announced (it was changed to the 30th to allow a maximum number of people compared to a Friday).
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
  • NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...

SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.

SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.
joylesslove: Of your big city money and buy it (03. So you take a big bag)

But of course you may ask. Before arriving here, I was a doll.

[It makes plenty of sense to her. If someone wished to make her into a beast, they'd have to change her into a human first. Her body of wood and porcelain, while frail, was chosen so that she would not be susceptible to the corruption and infection that plagues so many humans over time.]

It is... strange, being made of flesh and bone. Is this what you always feel like?

That's - fascinating. [There's a scramble of different possible meanings for that - a literal doll like the toy, some other variation, the way it was occasionally used figuratively for humanoid technological devices - but it got the basic idea across, particularly with her other question. He's not even thinking about the breach of courtesy there, either.]

I - well, I suppose so? Most things outside of perception of the world are familiar enough to be taken for granted, and fall out of conscious notice.
joylesslove: (04. But at night when the house is dark)

[personal profile] joylesslove 2015-05-25 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I thought so as well. For as long as I can remember, I have sought only to serve humans as best I could. I did not think that one day, I would become one!

[She brings a hand up to cover her mouth, and gives a small giggle.]

You do not notice it? How odd. I do not think I will ever get used to the feel of this heart beating within my chest.
kaus_australis: (But in all chaos there is calculation)

I think I'm going to need to occasionally apologize to anyone who talks to him for things like this

Then you were created by some manner of sorcery? [It's his first thought, although hypothetically advanced enough technology could also achieve a similar result; most Militesi drones might've only been capable of executing predictable programming patterns, but some of their recent work seemed to be edging towards self-aware and responding more fluidly to surroundings.]

[He does have a pause where he has a hand almost over his heart, thinking before he starts something that's an attempt to explain with a few vague hand gestures through it.] Being continually aware of everything would become distracting and make it difficult to focus on any one thing enough to function; the brain has structures dedicated to filtering input, sorting out what would be relevant and useful immediately for conscious notice, what may not be of immediate note but is worth remembering in the long-term, and what to essentially discard or work around without notice - any sensation that is 'continual background noise' long enough will eventually fall into the last category, only drawing attention when something about it changes unexpectedly.

I... I do not know. There are things that I do not remember.

[She was dreamed, she knows, as all things within the Hunter's Dream are, save for the Messengers. But there are things before that, that give her a vague sense of familiarity, but she can't quite recall. She knows she was created by humans, though, and for that she will always love them. Of that much, the Doll is certain.]

I was created by humans. That is all I need to know.

[She's just going to... stare blankly as he goes into the explanation of neuroscience. She nods politely, as if she understands, but it's all just gibberish to her. Sorry Trey. It seems like it's really important to him, though, so she won't interrupt until he's finished.]

I... see.

[No she doesn't.]

[It almost confuses him for a moment, as if there's something he's used to happening that isn't happening; most of his "siblings" would have cut in somewhere in that tangent, or been...well, obvious about a lack of comprehension and a "No don't keep going". As sharp as he can be for politics and tactics, he's people-dumb enough socially to be unsure of the instinct that something's off there.]

Fair enough - pardon my curiosity; I didn't mean to pry, it's just fascinating. No-one on my world has, to my knowledge, created a sentient being. [He and his siblings were definitely tampered with, but they weren't created from whole cloth; their Mother had found them as small children.] You will likely get used to much of this state as there is time to adjust.

[He's also not sure how to read some of it - is it bothering her or just a curiosity? Should he be offering sympathy?]
joylesslove: Where no one lives. (02. There's a house)

[personal profile] joylesslove 2015-05-29 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[She offers him a kind smile.]

You have done nothing that needs pardoned. I enjoy your curiosity.

[She just doesn't understand his questions, is all.]

Tell me, though: Is that really true? No one where you come from has ever made anything that can think?

[That sounds strange to her, and not quite right. She knows nothing of the world he comes from, though, so she doesn't want to contradict him.]

kaus_australis: (There is no vision that we surrender)

[He shakes his head, although he's running back over things in his head, double-checking history, some of the notes in Sorcery's research archives, what he could go through of intelligence reports from Milites...]

No-one but the gods - the Empire has made some machines that can respond to specific circumstances in their environment, but it's only on pre-set paths; sentry drones that will fire on anyone not of their own people and the like. They are otherwise unaware and unresponsive, unaffected by any magics and lacking the inherent energy of a thinking being.

[At least he was thinking enough to adjust away from terminology that would likely be restricted to his world, even if he wasn't about to say anything of knowing that last part for sure because if they had a soul to gather base magic energy to, then there would've been Phantoma cores on the battlefields gathered from fallen drones.]
joylesslove: That always follows you (11. And there's a creepy doll)

[personal profile] joylesslove 2015-05-30 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[She cocks her head to the side for a moment.]

Ah, so your gods make more of your own kind, then? You do not... give birth to them? How strange.

[Because, in her opinion, that definitely constitutes 'making a thinking being'. Than again, maybe this boy that comes from a species that's mass-produced by their gods? As a created entity herself, she's hardly in a position to judge him for that, if that is the case.]

[Well, as much as the records show his siblings being found, nobody really does know where they came from before Arecia gathered them.]

[Trey has a dawning recognition pause, raising both hands with an awkward wave of denial.] Oh - no, that's not... I doubt there's any difference to how humans are born, at least, if I were to hazard a guess - the Gods made the Great Crystals who are certainly thinking, but humans have not made anything like yourself other than children that I know of - Or well, not in any known era?

[Some of his flounder realizing he's confused things and isn't sure how to un-confuse them is leading to tripping over other ideas that probably aren't helping.]
