TEST DRIVE : MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
  • We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
  • Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
  • The reserve date has been announced (it was changed to the 30th to allow a maximum number of people compared to a Friday).
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
  • NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...

SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.

SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

[ Hershel scarcely breathes as the laughter echoes about them. He strains to keep his ears open, follows the sound as it moves from place to place. If he can just get a bead on it...

The sound fades before long, taken by the rustle of the trees. Hershel exhales tensely, staring carefully in the direction he'd last heard the sound - over a steep ridge, climbing further into darkness. Perhaps it wasn't the most solid bet, and perhaps it was all a waste of time - it was as likely as anything else that's happened here, anyway - but they could at least try. He doesn't turn to face Emily when he speaks next.
]

Perhaps so, Miss Wyatt... but I am sure you understand my reluctance. If someone is out there, I believe that it would be best that they're brought back to town.

[ His nose wrinkles as he peers into the gloom. A prank is possible, but it's... not something that he's betting on. If this is all constructed for something, the pamphlets he'd received upon leaving the hospital tell him it's not amusement. ]

However, we are not having a terrible amount of luck in getting to the bottom of all of this. [ He turns around and looks to Emily. ] I'm rather at a loss, unfortunately, on how we ought proceed. I've not found any trace of children anywhere in the forest.

Right, of course. [With a nod, too.]

[If. If's... not good. Greenvale was pretty small. If someone went missing or got lost in the woods, well, usually people knew about it. Who knows who's out here? Not her. The laughter just keeps coming, like if someone was playing it on a tape deck. Maybe it's less of a prank and more of a... more of a trap.

But... who'd do a thing like that?

She thinks for a bit, tapping at her necklace. What they need is a new point of view, or a way to cover more ground, or-- she opens her eyes and sees the forest around her. And that's when she gets an idea.]

Are you any good at climbing trees? [A shaky look, as she explains.] We might be able to see more of the forest that way. [And if nobody else is here--

They'll cross that bridge later.]

[ Hershel is beginning to fear the same... he'd been sure to read what material he'd had the time to when he'd first arrived, but then, he'd chalked it up to mere superstition. Now... he isn't so sure. Even if what he'd read about was impossible, that wasn't to say the belief had to be completely unfounded, and the Professor is starting to suspect that something more is behind it all - be it mundane, or supernatural. There had been no physical evidence of anyone in the woods that he had seen, and he could reasonably assume that Emily would answer the same. So how, then, could they be assured that anyone was truly out there? Layton presses his knuckles to his mouth as he thinks, as stories of forest spirits luring travelers from dirt paths and into forests cross his mind...

He looks to Emily when she speaks.
] I can't say that I have a terrible amount of experience, but it is certainly worth attempting.

[ A higher vantage point would allow them to pinpoint their location, if Hershel could push through the canopy in his climb, and if they don't escape now, then certainly their whereabouts in relation to the forest's edge would be useful later. He could also see any significant movement in the area from the top of one of the trees.

Hershel looks at the trees surrounding them, and quietly singles out any with branches low enough for him to reach. He walks about, testing them with a brief pull downward, and eventually settles on one that feels strong enough to support his weight. He braces both hands on the branch and, with a grunt, pulls himself up.

[At heart, Emily would prefer to think there was a reasonable explanation for everything. Forests aren't haunted just because someone says they are. Monsters are things from... bedtime stories. Folklore, urban legends. But preferring to think that way doesn't make it true. Not all the time. Maybe... maybe not this one, too. Monsters might be real. Forests might be haunted.

But kids might be stuck out here, all the same. And taking the easy solution--- well, she's not going to do that, either.

She would've climbed the thing herself, if it turned out he wouldn't. If he needs a boost, well, she can do that too. Helping hands, and all that. Just like looking for lost cats at home. Nothing to it. After a suitable tree climbing induced pause, she'll ask:]

See anything yet? [The ground floor of a forest like this-- it's no place to stay.]

[ Hershel continues his way up the tree in much the same way; he looks around, pulls at branches within his armspan, and pulls himself to the strongest one. He's glad to run into less problems then he might have expected, and he ascends a fair amount before Emily calls up to him. He looks down first at her, and then around, pressing his back against the tree's trunk to stabilize himself.

He scans the forest floor. The forest looks as unnaturally still as ever... and cementing this from such a height runs a strange shiver down the Professor's spine. He hasn't spent any great amount of time in forests, but he's quite certain they're not normally supposed to lie this still. Should there not, at the very least, be more animal life? He doesn't even see any animals or birds from his height. He looks down again, and tries to ignore the pit in his stomach as he realizes just how high he sits.
]

I'm afraid not, Miss Wyatt! [ He's glad to look up again, and once he wills himself steady, he grabs at a crevice between the thick and upreaching branches above his head. His hand hits dried-out sticks and leaves bundled together, but also something smooth, and a little moist--

He looks, and under his fingers, he sees a reddened bone that he is certain is too large to belong to any forest-dwelling creature.

The Professor inhales sharply and draws back, tipping the thing over and sending it falling.
