Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:
You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
The reserve date has been announced (it was changed to the 30th to allow a maximum number of people compared to a Friday).
Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.
Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.
Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.
SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...
SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.
SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.
["Surgeon" at least seems to count for something, if his pause is anything to go by.] I think I would trust you over any of these, even with something as unfamiliar as the transformations they're afraid of.
[Staying calm and rational? Much better than the way they're handling things.] You - wouldn't happen to be from somewhere in Orience as well, would you? This does not seem to be a restricted facility, exactly, and I don't believe I've seen the town outside before...
[With how paranoid everyone is, he wouldn't have been surprised by some kind of prison, and "civilian hospital" wasn't his first thought for where to put "potentially dangerous" individuals, if he were the locals.]
[His face drops at that; even if he was half-expecting it, getting it confirmed is still somehow disappointing.] Then I am at least on another continent. [That was a quiet mumble, but he's not very good at not being overheard before he looks back up.] If this town of "Vandare" is known in neither Orience nor New York, then there's no telling how far from home we both are.
It's beginning to look more and more like some strange kidnapping. The chances of ending up somewhere English speaking that I've never even heard of are pretty slim.
[Joan isn't quite ready to believe the multiple worlds thing yet. She wishes briefly for Sherlock.]
English? [That sure is a blank look of no recognition of that language; he has a pause with almost visible gears turning in his head.]
[And then asks something in some kind of odd language that has little to nothing in common with anything that'd be familiar that seems to go between smoother rolling sounds with occasional sharp consonants. Technically he's got a lousy accent and it's hesitant in a couple spots, not that anyone present but him would know to realize that.]
((And then I ran to the FAQ to check that you could intentionally switch languages >w>; ))
Concordian. I admit, my pronunciation is probably off; of the older languages besides my own, I'm far better with Militesi for tactical reasons. [But it doesn't seem like badly accented speech was the problem there.]
This is fascinating, however - I've never heard of English, and to my perception, everyone was speaking the trade language of the four Crystal-States. Apparently there is either some sort of ambient effect across this place, or whatever brought us here also included some component that allows us to comprehend each other and the locals in our own languages. I know of some theories but they would all hinge on forms of perception not normally functioning in mortal humans...
[he's stopping to think. She might want to interrupt him, or he might keep going.]
Hold on. You say you've never heard of English, yet you're speaking it perfectly. And you just spoke to me in a completely unfamiliar language that I've never heard of.
What exactly do you think is happening here?
...I apologize for him not speaking English anymore. Feel free to WTF at him as much as you want.
That's precisely the point. To my ears, you're speaking the bastard-child language used as a trade tongue in Orience; apparently attempting to speak a language other than the one most familiar to us functions normally, yet otherwise, we're hearing each other - and the local residents - in our own languages. [He's gesturing lightly as he speaks, and unfortunately, has been handed something to figure out.]
Some of the existing theories for something superficially similar that exist in my nation would be unwieldly and not fit all of the factors here, but if whatever brought us here forged some sort of stronger-than-normal ties phantomically between us and this place, the connections alone would likely be enough to translate for us without us even being aware of it.
[This is a lot to take in. Joan's going to need a moment.]
Okay, so you're saying we're just hearing whichever our first language is, no matter what the other person is speaking? And what do you mean by 'phantomically'?
I certainly couldn't speak a language I've never heard of from a place I am also completely unfamiliar with. [he shrugs, hands raised for a moment.]
Ah - "Phantoma" is the term used in Orience for the metaphysical energetic core of a living thing; magic and some other abilities draw on it as a resource, while some effects such as healing magic or any mind-affecting spells act partly upon it. I'm afraid I wouldn't know what word would be used in your language for it, if the effect translating left that word alone.
Well, a purely mechanical interface would be far more obvious, likely less functionally smooth and subtle, and probably include odd surgical scars. [That strayed into mildly offended sarcasm - of course he's talking about magic, magic is accepted scientific fact! But another thought seems to come through.]
...Although - does "New York" have a Crystal - [He pauses, hand raised punctuating words occasionally.] ah, a sort of divine presence manifested as a crystallized spire, or awareness of any such extant in whatever lands you're familiar with?
[He rubs the back of his head and neck, partly just as a double-check for any odd scars or marks indicating possible brain surgery.] If they had done some form of operation, there'd be some sort of scars or marks - at least as far as I could tell with myself, all of the scratches and cuts are superficial bites and clawmarks from animals.
[It's...delivered very dry and cynically for someone that's all of seventeen.]
Your skepticism aside, that raises some further problems. I had thought it was possible this was simply across one of the ocean stretches we have yet to explore, but if your homeland is as you say... [He has an uncomfortable frown pondering phrasing.] From what we do know of the rest of our world so far, there would be at least some degree of surface energetic structure capable of supporting obvious effects for at least some nonhuman beings. A lack of at least some occurrences would mean a dramatic difference in the world itself, and if you and I are not from the same world, then there is no guarantee that this place is on either of our worlds.
As far as I know, the world I come from is entirely mapped out. The way this place could exist is if it's... some weird cult or religious sect hidden away in the mountains.
I'm not quite ready to believe in dimension hopping just yet.
Then what explanation do you have for a complete mutual lack of any recognition of things from our respective points of origin?
[he leans his chin on his hands for a moment before that turns into a punctuation-gesture.] If your world is entirely mapped, then I imagine an entire unfamiliar continent with multiple nations would be an impossibility.
Would you be referencing solely the local people, or is that explanation also being applied to me?
[He rests his chin on one hand, and is ...starting to look unimpressed.] Because at the moment, you are attempting to explain this place and my home nation and world, which are very separate things.
[Trey lets out a slow breath; it's a couple moments of thinking with the irritation defusing.]
I suppose it is understandable - particularly if you've never had experience with anything for even a vague frame of reference. Perhaps I've arrived with something of an unfair advantage on the subject; travel of this sort may only be theoretical, but we have studied some gateways. To learn of such things by finding oneself in a completely foreign environment...
[Well, his tone is sympathetic and there's a small, quiet headshake, even if he's bad at being comforting. There was a valiant effort made?]

[Not that Joan would ever admit to seeing any schlocky sci-fi films.]

You think we were taken here, and can now understand each other because of magic.

New York doesn't have anything like that. Because there's no such thing as magic where I'm from.
