TEST DRIVE, MARCH ROUND

TEST DRIVE MEME
Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
  • You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
  • The reserve date has been announced.
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
  • NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together.

SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.

SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

Emi Ibarazaki | Katawa Shoujo

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Scenario One

[ This is all kinds of messed up. By the time she's out of the hospital - stuck in a wheelchair, her prosthetics nowhere in sight dammit - she's pinched herself, tried to dump cold water on herself, pinched herself again, harder, on one of those bruises, and damn did that hurt, and then finally decided that this isn't just a dream, she must be in a coma or something.

On the plus side, her brain is intact enough to up this whole thing with monsters and transformations and people being cautious of a tiny wheelchair bound girl. It's not a bad wheelchair either! Despite muttering to herself as she reads another weirdo pamphlet, she's trying to look at those little positives. ]

Scenario Three

This sure rolled in... pretty quickly...

[ Emi laughs. It isn't that anything's funny, or that she's at all happy, but nervous laughter just feels like the right thing for the moment. She's gotten some legs from Bavan, but they're heavier and stiffer than what she's used to. Making do with them doesn't mean that she'll be able to run away as easily as she might need to. ]
aphasiacartist: (curious)

I couldn't resist (Scenario One)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-02 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Rin is released from the hospital shortly after Emi. She hadn't seen her best friend inside the hospital, but it was somewhat of a relief to see a familiar, friendly face in this strange foreign land.

Not that Rin wouldn't have been perfectly content to wander around this place on her own, of course, but it's still good to have Emi around. And so she approaches her friend, and starts a conversation without so much as a 'hello, i've been kidnapped too'.
]

Did they take your legs when you got here?

[Because her friend's current lack of prostheses is more important than their apparent kidnapping, or the transformations they've been told are going to happen. Clearly.]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Questions That Need Answering)

Things I didn't expect: THIS

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-02 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Rin! Rin, great, sure, they got her too, whoever they is and whyever they brought two girls from Yamaku. Emi brightens up, even though this is bad news for Rin now too.

Frankly, Emi is hard-pressed to disagree about the importance of losing her freaking legs. ]

The doctor said I washed ashore without them. Maybe they'll wash up too?

[ She turns her chair a bit to face Rin more. ]

And have you been reading all of this Rin?
aphasiacartist: (unfocused)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-02 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe.

[Rin sounds sort of doubtful about that. The ocean is a really unpredictable place, full of things that lack legs of their own. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing that gives prosthetic legs back without a fight.]

Not really. Someone tried to give me some, but I didn't want to carry them around.

[The words 'monster' and 'transformation' have been thrown around, Rin knows. She's just not quite sure how she feels right about all this, it's a very strange situation.]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (A Swing and a Miss)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-02 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
...maybe.

[ It's not like it's hard for Emi to bring the pamphlets with her now that she's stuck like this. The streets aren't as conducive to wheelchairing as she'd like, but at least she's mobile, and she can sit on the pamphlets or whatever. ]

They're freaky. I don't buy it, but I don't buy this place existing either, so what do I know?
aphasiacartist: (curious)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-02 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
...maybe something else is using your legs now. Like a fish, or a six tentacle octopus.

[ Hey, if mysterious mass kidnappings are possible, who is Rin to say that a bunch of other stuff isn't possible? It's still probably pretty unlikely, though. ]

I think that, maybe, the transformation stuff was a metaphor for something else.

[ Because even in Rin's mind, the idea of people who urning into monsters seems pretty farfetched. She isn't 100 percent sure what it's a metaphor for, though. ]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Phantom Pain)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-03 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I... think they'd just weigh a fish down.

[ Unless they plan on putting on some kind of reverse-SCUBA gear and walking on land. That doesn't seem even vaguely likely, though. ]

Hopefully, but they all seemed to act like it was a big deal, and these pamphlets are pretty damn literal. It's creeping me out.

[ Assuming this isn't all in her head after all. ]
aphasiacartist: (bored)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-03 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
You're probably right. Fish wouldn't know what to do with legs.

[Probably. She's not conceding the impossibility of the situation, though.]

Yeah. Even if they aren't literal, it'd be pretty bizarre if they were trying to tell us about puberty or something.

[Somehow, that option seems almost creepier than the idea of her actually turning into a were-cat or something. For a moment, Rin sort of hopes that they're all serious.

There's sort of an awkward pause after that, and then:
]

...so what do you want to do now?

[Because she's sort of at a loss. There's no place she knows of that she could hide away and paint, no place here to call home, and no real direction given to them by the doctors here. Rin's got no ideas, so anything Emi wants to do, Rin will gladly follow.]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Second Time's the Worst)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-03 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
[ Fish don't know what to do with much of anything. There isn't much of a brain for knowing things with, even if blah blah smarter than people think or whatever she's heard about them. ]

...we already know way more than enough about that.

[ Having been through it and all. Emi leans back, shifting a bit in her wheelchair, head tilted thoughtfully as she thought it over. They were stuck here until someone launched a rescue party of some kind. ]

I guess we find a place to stay, or break out those little laptops and see if we can get some internet to look stuff up.
aphasiacartist: (gRin)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-03 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing.

[About puberty, she means. A smirk appears on her face. Rin's had enough of those talks to last a lifetime, and she can only assume that Emi got even more, what with making friends with the nurse and all.]

Sounds good to me.

[Meaning either is fine with her. Fortunately, the medical staff in the hospital was kind enough to give her a bag to put the laptop in, otherwise Rin would've just abandoned it immediately.

You may be wondering why she didn't put the pamphlets in the bag with the laptop. That is a good question. Unfortunately, it is not a question Rin has a proper answer to.
]

Do you think I can find a tablet for this thing? It seems kind of old.
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (You made Emi Ibarazaki pout...)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-03 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He had some sense of boundaries about puberty talks with young girls, but not quite as much as she might have liked. One or both of them might need to end up giving them someday too - not that she can really see either of them as mothers any time soon. ]

I don't... really know how to just go from nothing to having somewhere to live. I'd be a terrible hobo.

[ There's no home for her to go to here, and she sighs, head drooping. ]

I dunno. We should just... just find... somewhere to sit down and... [ Make really frustrated noises?

Yeah she's doing that. ]
aphasiacartist: (focused)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-03 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we could be hobos. You'd have to carry my hobo stick for me, though.

[ Individually, yeah, they'd be crappy hobos. But Rin has faith in Emi, and in their combined ability to ride the rails and live a life of vagrancy. It might even be sort of fun, for a little while.

Rin is snapped out of that train of thought by the frustrated sounds coming from Emi. It's not the sort of sound she heats often - Emi always seems so strong - bur she supposes it makes sense. This is a bizarre and stressful situation they've found themselves in. It's a lot to handle.

Rin isn't great with interpersonal stuff like this, but she knows enough to make an effort. She leans over her friend, and just sort of... places her chin on the top of Emi's head as a show of affection.
]

We're going to be okay.

chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Default)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ Their combined ability to cross flat ground and gentle slopes! This is a coastal town, but Emi's not sure how hilly it gets as they move inland - it seems like a pain in the ass, frankly, to get around like this. They could really use a third member of their team.

It sucks. This sucks. It all sucks so much, and now the fact that she's helpless is sinking in - she's used to getting funny looks, that's nothing new, but now she can't even do anything about anything.

Busy stewing in frustration, she almost jumps at Rin's chin on her head, as unfortunate as jumping would be, and sort of... turns her eyes up. She smiles, and takes a deep breath. ]

Yeah. Between the two of us, what can't we do?

[ A lot. ]
aphasiacartist: (gRin)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-04 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of things. We can't fly. [Not unless one of them gets turned into a monster that can fly, of course.] But I don't think we'll need to do that.

[Rin cracks that goofy, spacey grin of hers once more - as if to state that, for the record, was an intentional joke - and looks back at Emi.]

We'll find a place where we can stay. Then we'll find you some new legs. Then we'll... [She's drawing a blank as for what to do next. An ability to prioritize has never really been one of Rin's strongest traits. She's sort of focused right now, if only because she wants to be helpful to her distressed friend, but it's hard.] ...figure out something else to do.
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Down That Medicine Now)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, we could put that to good use.

[ Like flying the hell home. Or stealing food until they figure out how to get it the honest way. There are probably a few other options too, but no, there's no flying to be had here. They aren't superheroes.

Just two lost girls who could use a little help. ]

Right. Gotta... prioritize, I guess? I just hope I can get some health insurance or something or else getting legs is gonna eat up every penny we can save for a while.

[ And what kind of medical technology do they even have here? ]
aphasiacartist: (eyes closed)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-04 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[That's true. Honestly, Rin wouldn't mind being able to fly, for a lot of reasons. The idea of being so weightless, drifting among the clouds appeals to her in a really interesting way - No, stop. Gotta stay focused right now, this is important.

The idea of how much new legs for Emi would actually cost is a disheartening thought. Rin's never worked a real job in her life, and she doesn't think Emi has either. Saving up that much money isn't going to be easy for the two of them by themselves.

There's one thing Rin can offer, though.
]

We could always sell things.

[She's talking about her paintings, for the record, but she's having a hard time saying as much. It's the only idea she's got for herself - her only marketable skill is art, after all - and it isn't really that bad of one. Nomiya thought her work was good enough to deserve its own exhibit, after all.

The idea of that much pressure on her artwork was sort of terrifying for Rin, though, and that's when it was just an exhibit. The thought of Emi depending on her artworks success - or even just depending on it herself - was sort of petrifying in a way that Rin found especially difficult to articulate. She's never shared those thoughts with Emi, of course. Or anyone else. She's not entirely sure how to express them in such a way that she can share them. But that hardly matters, now, when it seems like she's got no choice in the matter.
]

Like my paintings. That could help, right?

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ They can probably learn jobs, but it's not like Emi could even be a physical trainer like this. She knows exercises she can do to stay in decent shape, thankfully, but she can't actually offer what is, in her mind, her one really noteworthy talent to anyone.

...well she has one other thing she's sorta good at, but she isn't doing that for money.

Emi thinks on it for a moment, tilting her head one way, then the other, at the thought of Rin sharing her art. Even now, she really doesn't know just how conflicted Rin is over there being pressure on her art, or just how bad a place it put her in, so it largely just comes off as the first decent option they've got. ]

As long as there's a market for art, yeah, that's probably our best bet for a start.
aphasiacartist: (can't hug)

Okay, it's settled. This is heartbreaking and we need to app these girls ASAP.

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-04 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Rin swallows hard and takes a deep breath. She doesn't resent Emi for putting her in this position, for the record (although it does, in fact, hurt to be put there). They both need money to survive, after all, and she's the one who can paint. Really, it doesn't make any sense to be upset over this particular aspect of their situation - not when so much else is happening.

So then why is she?
]

...I'll need some paints...

[Because that's important, if one intends to paint things.]

...let's find somewhere to stay first, though.

[Procrastination is a valid way to handle discomfort, right? It's best to put off thinking about this sort of thing until there's absolutely no time at all left to wait. Let them find a place to stay, and then find a place to eat and then find any number of things before Rin is forced to confront her anxiety.]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: All but two keywords are names of scenes from Emi's route (Morning Run)

I was so leaning towards my other character in the test run but this. Yes.

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ For Emi, it's a bright spot too; she doesn't really catch Rin's nerves over the matter at all, even if being responsible for their survival has to be stressful all on its own. Somehow she'll find a way to contribute, even if it's just by helping Rin at first, because goodness knows artists have a hard time living off of that.

Maybe she can just find a retail job. Just enough to get by. It's a task, and focusing on a task makes it a lot easier to gloss over the big picture of being where they are. ]

I wish I knew where to start. Think we should just... ask around about that?

[ At least they can both talk to people well enough. ]
aphasiacartist: (focused)

Oh? Who else were you thinking of apping?

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-04 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Emi finding a job would take a load off of Rin's mind. The pressure of supporting them would still eat at her, of course, but less so if she has some help in handling the situation.]

Okay, let's find someone, then.

[Well... Emi can talk to people well enough, at least. Rin has a lot more trouble with that, although she can manage from time to time.

In any case, Rin is already wandering off in a random direction, in hopes of finding someone. She isn't the type to wait for Emi to take the lead, after all, and she knows for a fact that her friend won't have trouble keeping up - even without her legs.
]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (You made Emi Ibarazaki pout...)

Guila from The Seven Deadly Sins, right below this post.

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ They'll both find ways to get a job, and get by, and figure out what all this 'transformation' talk actually means. For a given value of fine, the two of them will be fine, Emi's sure of it.

Rin can talk to people, of course, there's more a matter of what she talks about. Still, that too can be figured out. ]

Someone who looks smart.

[ Emi doesn't have the best eye for that, but it'll amount to guessing either way. Rin doesn't run around too quickly, thankfully, so it's little effort to get herself rolling along at her friend's pace. ]

And uh, I guess we could keep an eye out for anyone else we know.
aphasiacartist: (huh?)

I'm not familiar, but she looks cool! I'm definitely biased toward Emi, though.

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-04 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
[It's good that one of them is so optimistic, because the inside of Rin's head became a big ball of anxiety the moment they started talking about the logistics of living here.

If Emi thinks they're fine, though, that counts for something. At the very least, it means that Rin can put her stress on hold, until it becomes more urgent.
]

Right. Smart.

[Neither of them is exactly the bookish sort, so it might be tough to sniff out someone they both deem as 'smart,' but Rin is more than willing to give it a shot.

Until they find such a person, however, Rin's mind us going to wander.
]

...so if you had to transform into something, what would you want to be?
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Piracy on the High Seas)

She's pretty neat. Totally minor character though.

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 'Fine' in that she can currently pretend it's fine at least. Moving around, doing things, talking about getting things done, that's all well and good, even if she'll lose all that optimism again at some point.

Even looking around for help is something she puts a little too much obvious effort into, distracting herself. ]

...like a monster?

[ Like what people are implying they might turn into. ]

I dunno, all the weaknesses kinda suck. Maybe a weresomething.
aphasiacartist: (eyes closed)

[personal profile] aphasiacartist 2015-03-04 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Like anything.

[Rin isn't picky. Also, a lot of the 'monsters' that people in the hospital talked about didn't sound very monster-like. Fur Bearing Trouts don't seem like the sort of thing someone might be intimidated by.

She nods sagely at Emi's answer. Weresomethings are an idea Rin can get behind.
]

I'd be a werecloud.

[She says it 100% seriously, that would be her ideal monster transformation. Being a cloud sometimes would be really fun, she imagines, and she'd still be human sometimes too. That's would allow her to paint, whenever she's not drifting aimlessly in the skies above.]
chariotsofcarbonfiber: (Clean Teeth)

[personal profile] chariotsofcarbonfiber 2015-03-04 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ True. Furry trout don't sound scary, just gross. Wouldn't that make swimming way too difficult anyways? Frankly, a werewolf sounds way more realistic than a furry trout and she's not even a zoologist or anything of the sort. If you're a werething you get to be a person a lot of the time, and then hopefully something cool the rest of it.

Rin's answer doesn't surprise Emi. ]

Drifting along during a full moon, and you wouldn't even hurt anyone, probably.

[ Unless she was low-lying enough to be fog or something. ]

Way better than being a werewolf.
