Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:
You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins per bonus coin group (so 6 total) by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 20 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.
Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.
Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous people who had them saying they are lies, or pointing out good "jokes."
SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...
SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.
SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.
Waking up soaked and covered in bruises and cuts is a bit startling. Him, of all people, would remember being close to supposedly drowning, but he can't recall a single thing. Just that one moment he was prepared to leave Bilgewater and in the next, he wakes up here in this place. With little explanation and on his own. Twisted Fate venturing into the world solo isn't unusual, but he'd just agreed to work together with Graves again.
Hopefully, he won't take Twisted Fate's sudden disappearance so personally. This time it wasn't by choice.
What upsets him most, admittedly, is that none of his powers work here. The Gate won't open and the cards don't respond to his commands anymore. For the first time in his life, there is no magic, and although he'd never display it on his face it disturbs him to know that he has nothing but the clothes on his back. Even as a child, he could rely on his magic to help him.
Now it's wits and sleight of hand.
Right now, Twisted Fate's located at a less then pleasant looking shack. He's kicked off his wet boots and is attempting to let his clothing dry at this point.
"Well, at least I don't smell like fish guts," the card shark muses to himself as he watches his dripping coat.
SCENARIO TWO
In the past, even if Twisted Fate got lost, he'd find his way. Gate and Destiny would allow him enough vision to find his way around, so in the end it never really mattered.
Here, he has no such luxury. No magic, no Gate, no Destiny.
So that means when he's lost in the woods, he's really lost in the woods. It's an unpleasant conundrum, like many other things here, but he takes it with a swagger and smile like he does everything else, like it's no bother at all.
Despite the eerie laughter echoing all around him. Twisted Fate is uncomfortable, but he's at a real loss if he shows it.
Especially when he comes face to face with someone else.
"I don't suppose you got a clue on how to find our way out of this?" he asks calmly, a smile tugging at the ends of his mouth.
SCENARIO FOUR
It's something he knows that was inevitable. Maybe he'd hoped he'd be different and it simply would never happen to him, that he'd outrun the change long enough, but that's impossible. No one has outrun it. Not even Twisted Fate can avoid the changes that are coming to him.
It starts off with an itch he can really shake. It's been bothering him all day and he quietly bemoans that maybe he's brushed up against some kind of poison ivy or something else. During the day, he idly scratches at his arms and neck.
He scratches at his neck idly, and doesn't expect skin to come away with it. It hurts vaguely, like the area is a bit raw and sensitive and not as much as he was expecting. Inwardly, he's shocked to look at the skin clinging to his fingers. Outwardly, he mutters, "Well, that ain't good."
His throat is dry and he dreads the possibility. Hesitantly, he touches his neck, and feels scales there. Sensitive, but not bleeding at least. He's anxious to know that the change is starting and claiming him, and he knows he'll try not to scratch but it probably doesn't matter.
So he jokes to himself, "I'd better not be bleedin' on my vest. Silk's a pain to wash."
[ if madoka's has been expecting anything during her little hunting expedition, it's not this - a lost newcomer, smiling and acting for all the world like he's got nothing to be afraid of. it almost intimidates her, really - she feels like he's got something up his sleeve.
so she clears her throat out of reflex, keeping a fair distance before speaking up. ]
I... I do, actually. Did you get lost in here?
[ if he's a newcomer, the last she can do is offer a way out. even if he's not a newcomer. anyone deserves that chance. ]
[For a moment when he sees her, he breathes in sharply and he goes still. Any other day, any other location and he wouldn't have been startled, but Twisted Fate is taken off guard here and now, unsure of what to expect.
She's talking. Right. He remembers to breathe, and he cracks a smile her way. Nope, everything is fine here, really.]
'Fraid so. Foolish of me in retrospect, but here I am, all turned around.
Would you do me the kindness of helping me find my way?
[ it's odd, really, but seeing the startle in the other man - it's reassuring. it means that he's not one of the villagers setting a trap, and it means he's probably a newcomer. madoka's demeanor shifts slightly - her shoulders relaxing as she straightens up out of the tense stance from earlier. ]
Of course! I can do that for you... you're new here, right? I mean, one of the newcomers.
[ she turns away from him, sure to keep him in her periphery - not particularly difficult, with her horizontal pupils - and scans around for a moment. she just needs to identify where she came from, and... ]
This way. [ she flashes him a quick, apologetic smile - sure to keep her lips pressed together - and starts retracing her steps. she makes some conversation as she goes. ] You're part of the newest group, right? So... probably today, or yesterday, at least.
[The body language is easy to comprehend, despite her appearance. She's relaxing around him, and that's a good sign. Still, Twisted Fate remains cautious, knowing that despite everything he's still more unarmed than he's ever been in his life.]
I wonder what gave it away. [It's spoken as a joke, and he chuckles to himself.] Just a couple of days ago. Still getting my bearings.
[Twisted Fate follows her, placing his hands into his pockets.] How long have you been here?
How long, hmm... [ it's mostly idle noise, a way of buying time as she thinks. ] This would be - a year and two months, now? I was one of the very first arrivals, so...
[ her gaze flickers backwards for just a moment, gauging the man's reaction. he's been here for a few days, so surely he's aware on some level what awaits, but - people have ignored the warnings for longer. ]
...you probably shouldn't go near the woods for a while, if you can help it. A lot of the monsters come out here to hunt. [ it's politely worded, as best as she can - there are animals aplenty out here, at least. the fact that someone who isn't a monster yet can get lost so easily... well, she doesn't want to make any implications here. ]
Shame to hear. [If that's the case, it sounds like he has a long stay. It's bad news, but he'll have to roll with it. Such is the way of things. If he's disappointed, Twisted Fate does not show it.]
It wasn't the best choice, I'll admit. [He had his intentions out here. Easy picks in the forest was an old fashioned decision, but Twisted Fate made an error in determining how he'd know his way around. Instead of looking ashamed, he smiles almost sheepishly, his body language still maintaining the usual swagger with a hint of an honest mistake.] I suppose I'm just used t'being able to take what's thrown my way. Not so much used to being as cautious as I need to these days.
for all this time, death felt... not comforting, no, but relieving in its finality. a conclusion to her tragedy - the end of the miserable existence named "sayo yasuda." all this time she'd thought that the roulette would be the final game she'd be locked into, and instead she finds herself miraculously alive in a hospital bed.
she doesn't even feel angry. why should she? george is dead, and with him shannon's future. jessica is dead, and with her kanon's redemption. beatrice is dead, hidden away the catbox of 1986. all that remains by this point is a husk, a cursed body fit only to be furniture. so she nods and signs papers, not even bothering to listen to the whispers flitting by around her, and the moment she is released she heads back to the ocean.
can anything come of trying to defy fate, here?
she finally notices the shack in her peripheral vision, the young man hanging clothes in front, and for a moment she considers fleeing. she can't even imagine what she must look like right now - her brine-soaked dress, her still-bloodied shoulder, her unkempt hair...
but by this point, she reasons, she has nothing remaining that to lose. instead, she just speaks out to him, her soft voice an odd contrast to her disheveled appearance. ]
You're one of the others, aren't you? The ones fate dragged here.
[When Twisted Fate looks at the girl, he isn't without his sympathies. She looks as sorry as he's felt before, soaked to the bone and bleeding from a shoulder. Matter of fact, she looks worse yet, and that's unfortunate.
He isn't one to usually put himself out there for others. No need to, really, not when he's very self-reliant, but in a strange place like this without knowing entirely what he's in for, some relationships would be wise. Connections.
At her words, Twisted Fate chuckles and tucks some of his drying hair behind an ear.]
Kind of an unfortunate choice of words, on account of my name. But I reckon you ain't wrong.
You look cold. Haven't had to do it in awhile, but I can probably make a fire. [Twisted Fate pauses, then cracks a lop-sided grin, playing into a sense of friendliness.] Maybe.
[ the question slips out before she even has time to think about it. she shakes her head, trying to distance herself from that sense of curiosity. she's not fit to talk with someone like this as an equal... is she?
what is there to stop her? all the others must be dead, save for battler. and if this tainted family has been wiped off the board, if the evidence of their sins is truly gone...
she doesn't deserve happiness - she knows that much. countless sins over countless fragments guarantee that. she's not even sure she deserves a clean death at this point. but maybe she can pretend at it, make-believe that this is a chance at redemption, for just a little while. ]
...mm. It's more than I deserve, but I won't stop you.
Twisted Fate is what I go by. [His hat is drying, so at best right now he can give a little bow instead of a tip of his hat.] No worries, little lady.
[That's a bit of a depressing response, isn't it. He's vaguely curious, but it's hardly appropriate to get around to prying questions and he does legitimately have better things to be doing right now.
Like trying to make a fire.
He remembers as a boy trying to figure out how to make one. On the river, he didn't have to worry about it, and was cared for, but after the exile, he had to learn everything else on his own. For a time, he's been able to, but in the past several years he's gotten used to indulging himself with money and charm instead of the more old-fashioned ways.]
Have a seat. Let's see if I still got it.
[Despite his uncertainty, he acts confident and grins regardless as he arranges some of the logs and sticks he's found, trying to keep them as dry as possible. Twisted Fate frowns to himself at a splinter that stabs his palm, but it's more of an annoyance than anything else.]
And whose company do I have the pleasure of being in today?
[ the name comes as a surprise, even with the man's earlier comments, and she has to (barely) stifle a laugh. "twisted fate?" maybe it's no coincidence that they've met in a place like this, then. she can almost see the witch's smug grin now. ohoho, what did you expect? to be rescued from certain peril as you were, it must be the work of magic! only the golden witch herself could have done so, and she has sent her familiar to mock you, kiiihihihii!
but beatrice is dead, sinking to the bottom of the sea, and only sayo is left. she can't help but smile at the man's demeanor - he really does have the demeanor of a warlock, doesn't he? - and obey his words, dropping down and sweeping the dress underneath her as a makeshift towel. ]
I'm... Sayo. [ she could give any number of names here - but what good would it do? and besides, even if her confessions are found, she resigned herself to her fate when she spun the roulette. she has nothing to lose. ] My name is Sayo Yasuda.
[ she watches as he puts the fire together. this would be so easy if beatrice were here, wouldn't it...? a snap of her fingers, a stray thought, and a golden pyre would rise over everything. but his technique, human though it is, is good enough - they shouldn't be cold for too much longer. ]
Sayo. [It sounds vaguely Ionian, but he remembers: he's in another world now, so to remark upon such a thing would be pointless. Where she's from is irrelevant right now, and unfortunately so are his origins. He has no magic to speak of, and he's just another man who has quick hands and his wits.
So instead, he says:] That's a lovely name. Pleasure's all mine.
[At her question, he allows a wry chuckle as he works. A dagger against a flint, trying earn himself that spark that'll give them warmth.] Sometime ago, I used t'do it frequently, actually. Before I could afford better.
Suppose I can't afford much now, though. What about you, little lady? You don't look the campin' type. [And he's allowing himself plenty of room for error on that remark. People are not always what they seem.]
[ she flashes a small smile at his words - if only because a compliment is a compliment, whether offered sincerely or not, right? - before frowning. after all, she doesn't particularly want to describe herself right now. doing so either relies on a lie or lets this person know the kind of waste she really is. ]
Ah... [ he's only asking about her experience with this sort of thing, right? so there's no need to go too far in depth. just pick and choose the parts you want to be truth, and... ] I worked as a servant for a wealthy family, before I washed up here. I'm... not fully experienced with outdoorsmanship like this, but I least know the basics.
[ it's all true - just how much it leaves out is irrelevant, right? ]
[Words without details. That's a game he's played before, and he catches on quickly enough. Sayo owes him no further explanation, but he's aware of the limited truth as well.]
Must be quite the switch up for you, then. [An easy laugh slips from him.] 'Fraid that this is as far as cozy as it gets, Sayo.
In any case, I suppose I could show you a thing or two if y'need. [He sees no reason why not. Thus far, Sayo hasn't given him any reason to refuse assistance of any kind.
Briefly, he allows himself to be distracted as the right sparks finally light up the dry leaves he's arranged. Patiently, Twisted Fate blows air onto the leaves, encouraging life into the fire. It'll take plenty of tending to, but at least they have some warmth now.]
[ she chuckles back a bit with him, trying to ignore the familiarity in using her name. he certainly doesn't look japanese, after all - despite his apparent fluency. maybe it's magic? or maybe... it's just not worth thinking about right now. ]
...if you wish. [ the sparks flare, and suddenly her body remembers warmth. she can't stop the shiver that hits her - her dress is soaked, after all. how long has she been chilled to the bone...? she scoots in after a moment's hesitation, taking what heat she can get. ] There's a village nearby, isn't there? Why hide away out here?
[ she doesn't offer comment on why she's come out this far. truth be told, she's not even all that curious as to his reasoning. whether he's a woodsman or a convict makes no difference; indeed, perhaps a criminal would be easier to talk with. ]
It's up to you. Knowin' how to make a fire can be generally helpful.
[He has no need to teach her, but he can. In any case, making a positive relationship with a stranger could be helpful in the future.]
Heh, what a fine question. [Twisted Fate grins sharp and carefully watches the fire. If he didn't know better, he'd say that was almost a perceptive question, but he supposes that it's fair to ask. Why would a wet, cold man be away from the village?] I don't know these people. Suppose it's just overly cautious of yours truly, but I'm gonna take my time before I know for sure I can trust the people in there.
[That's a fraction of the truth, but it sounds pretty to say.]
"Not yet," A slightly croaked kids voice spoke up from nearby."Bu' word ta the wise, tha' doesn' guarantee it won'." By the looks of it the kid knows at least a little about what he was talking about. Smeared from attempts to wipe them away, trails of blood run down his forehead from the sharp beginnings of antlers poking out of his hair. More flaking and drying blood stains his chin, the large fangs catching on his lower lip, and slightly slurring his speech, where (hopefully) the likely culprit.
"Kind'a looks like you're shedding." The nosy observation comes out sounding a bit distant and out of it. He sounds like someone in shock, and if he's trying to hide it he's doing a very poor job of it.
