ryunosuke naruhodo | the great ace attorney

i. hold it!
[With a loud gasp, Ryunosuke's eyes flutter open to greet the fog-ridden sky above. Big mistake. A large clump of dirt enters his throat, and he chokes, coughing violently. His head swims as he sits up abruptly, his senses overwhelming him with information. Dampness. The chill of autumn. The smell of dirt and moss, and the promise of rain in the air.

A tombstone--no, many tombstones line the rows before him. His vision swims as he hacks up the last bit of soil, and dread suddenly grips his chest as he realizes where he is. His head twists around to confirm that--yes, that is a gravestone with his name on it.]

What the--?

[CLANG! The sound of a shovel striking the tombstone next to him can be heard, and Naruhodo nearly jumps out of his skin. He scrambles back, heart hammering in his chest as his eyes settle on a rather annoyed looking groundskeeper. No--not just annoyed, positively wrathful.]

H-Hey! I'm going, I'm going, I just woke up here! (Wherever here is.)
ii. adventures in magical translation
[This place was strange, to say the least, but perhaps the oddest thing Ryunosuke had encountered so far wasn't the advanced technology, nor the monsters that roamed the streets--though they are very terrifying. Rather, the signage that seems to populate this world is...confusing.

Upon entering town, he'd spotted a street sign written in what he thought was Japanese. The sight struck him as odd, as the surrounding architecture suggested a European town of some sort. As soon as the thought entered his mind and he blinked, the Japanese characters suddenly warped to become English words.

But that was impossible. Words don't change simply because your expectations shift. Perhaps he was seeing things. After all, he had just woken up in a grave, and who knows what happened to him before that?

As he continues to doubt himself, things become less and less consistent. Subsequently, Ryunosuke finds himself standing outside a cafe in Bavan, staring at a chalkboard that is currently advertising a lunch deal for ten solars. He's not quite sure what a 'solar' is, but regardless of the way he thinks about it, he's certain he understands what the Japanese equivalent of that word would be. His eyes seem to bulge out of his head as they dart around, trying to make sense of it all.

He doesn't realize he's standing right in the middle of the road until someone nearly bumps into him. Ryunosuke jumps, his attention brought back to reality.]

Ah--sorry! [He says, explicitly in English, inclining his head in apologies.] Um, this is probably a silly question, but...do you mind telling me what language that sign is in?

[He points towards the chalkboard, a sheepish expression on his face.]
