TEST DRIVE MEME: SEPTEMBER

Welcome to the Ryslig Test Drive Meme! Below are a few prompts to get you started, but you may make up any prompt you desire! Please take a look at the navigation page for rules, setting information, and links to reserves and apps. Have fun!

SCENARIO ONE
You wake up on the beach thoroughly drenched with your mouth full of sand. The salt water causes various cuts and scrapes on your skin to sting and the sand isn't helping. The air is slightly humid, ruining any feeling of refreshment you might have gotten from your dip in the ocean. There are lights in the distance but the unfriendly scent of gunpowder fills the air. If you're lucky, you're alone. If not, you might find yourself staring up into a pair of monstrous eyes or down the barrel of a local's shotgun.

SCENARIO TWO
So you've just arrived, and already some of the natives are trying to get on your good side with offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous people who had them saying they are lies, or pointing out good "jokes." Then there's the people who aren't happy to see you at all. Glares and silent, judging stares if you're lucky, torches and pitchforks attempting to drive you out of the town if you're not. You may need a friend to help you.

SCENARIO THREE
"Seek us out," the voice whispers in your head, and before you have time to question it you've found yourself in someplace entirely alien. Maybe it's the Fog God's ghostly town of Dyster, where exultant followers dance around bonfires and sing their praises to the skies above. Maybe it's the Fourth God's arcade, with small robots wheeling about amidst the lights and colors of old pinball machines. Only one thing is certain: you are not alone, in this sacred place.

SCENARIO FOUR
The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

"Mycroft Holmes."

This was the literal strangest thing that's happened to him but that was no excuse for impropriety. Proper introductions were always in order.

"Wonderful." A pause. The monster hunger nonsense was going to hit him too eventually, wouldn't it? And snakes--

--oh, blast.

One thing to worry about at a time.

"Right, thank you, uh, Butters." He moved his arms to link with the vampire. The other man's human half was thinner under his suit, but the snake tail was enormously heavy. "I'm going to try to push." Fighting past his revulsion, he tried to sense what his tail's nerves were telling him. The pressure against the ground, the warmth, the coiled muscles filled with potential energy for quick movements. Appalling, but he had little choice now.

Tentatively, the tail twitched and shuddered again, thrashing back and forth clumsily, but there was an awkward sort of forward motion a bit. Mycroft had no idea how to properly slither, but he could flail.

The name sounds familiar, but Holmes isn't exactly a rare surname.

"Go ahead." He braced himself, feet against the ground, grunting with the effort of trying to be a steady support to a wriggling snake. Eventually, as Mycroft slides forward, he gets pushed back and to one side, feet almost sliding out from under him on a wet leaf.

"Oof! I'm okay! Don't stop!"

[And every time he comes an inch close to rethinking his lot in life, every time he wonders if the thrill of discovery is truly worthwhile and makes up for the all the spent energy and ingratitude — and that's not even getting into the danger — something like this comes along. Something that completely turns his world upside down and inside out.

In situations like that, which is to say the one Medic has found himself in right now, the answer could not be more clear: of course it is. Absolutely one hundred percent without a single doubt, yes, it's worth it. He'd hard-pressed to think of any other lifestyle filled with as much excitement and stimulation as a doctor's; maybe a zookeeper or a street performer (according to Soldier and Scout, those strip-mall Santas seem to have it very rough), but honestly! Show him someone who gets to travel as much as he does — unwillingly and unwittingly just as much as the inverse — while being able to mix business with pleasure. Sure, it can be frustrating, but on the whole?

He considers himself very lucky. The world is so vibrant and mysterious, filled with curiosities waiting to be ripped apart and put back together in new and exciting ways.

And that's not even getting into the people.]

Hallo!

[It's a cheerful enough greeting that will come from above Kaz, and the shadow that blocking out the sun seems to smiling. That's not surprising; it's an expression Medic defaults on more often than not. Besides, etiquette dictates that an effort should be made to appear hospitable and sociable in new company, and he intends on delivering both in equal measure.

Once he's gotten his fill of admiring the younger man's stumps anyway.]

You look like you're in trouble. [—said in a very frank, chipper tone, completely at odds with his words.]

[There are so many ways an investigation like this could go south. Although Cooper likes to think of himself as a glass half-full kind of guy who can divide his attention equally between the best and worst, there's not a lot of — oh, what's the word — good vibes to be found in a place like this. He has no intention of accepting whatever he's promised or tempted with — he squares that away before he even considers pressing forward, and if he's going to be stubborn and willful about anything here, it might as well be that and it might as well be right now.

Of course the Fog God doesn't have to know that. This isn't quite undercover work, but it may as well be. He feels like he's playing a part as he wanders through the town, soaking up the bizarre sights and chanting around him like he's walking through another one of his dreams. It's surreal and frightening, but at least it's grounded in some sort of reality, not like what he's seen in that red, red room with its dizzying black and white floor and billowing curtains.

Besides, at least this time he isn't completely alone.]

I think that depends on what you're looking for.

[He's still mostly human, but like Max, his body is starting to turn against itself in small yet noticeable ways. His eyes are forest-green instead of hazel now, and his ears are starting to lengthen as a leaf-like pattern of veins start to push themselves up to the surface of his skin. All in all, not unpleasant or horrifying, but still pretty alarming.]

Ohhh, you're from one of those worlds that doesn't have magic, huh?

[She almost sounds sympathetic. Those poor, magic-less humans!]

Well, now you're in a world that's FULL of magic!... It's not very good, magic, though. It's actually kinda evil and it sucks here. So calling it a nightmare isn't too far off!

[personal profile] tastyplasma 2017-09-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh hey, those changes are familiar to Max. The leafy patterns on his ears were different, but they still reminded her of Chloe's nymph changes. The ears, the eyes... but Chloe was pushed farther along than he is now. Should Max warn him about the green skin thing?

Oh. But he's asking her a question. Okay, she can address that first.]

I'm just... looking for someone to talk to. Someone who knows this place. And the Fog God too, I guess.

[The girl's unfamiliar, but her changes aren't. He's seen horns like those on some of the creatures in Bavan, but they're usually accompanied by harsher changes, like wings and talons. He doesn't see anything like that on her at all, which means she must be new like he is. Still human enough to pass for one if she covers her changes up.]

Looks like we're in the same boat. We'll have to form a line if more of us show up.

[Maybe he's not the only one who decided to go fishing for answers. It's a nice enough thought to consider, that maybe there are others on his wavelength who just want to get to the bottom of this nuttiness, but... She is pretty young. So call him concerned, even if his easy tone says otherwise.]

Light's time has come and gone and yet come again when he saw Mycroft dragging his disheveled self into the ally. The timing instantly clues him into the problem, and Light follows behind, keeping a safe distance should the stranger decide to strike out in anger or pain. Once he too reaches the entrance to the ally, he finally makes his presence known.

"I won't ask if you're alright, I wouldn't have come if you were. You're going through the changes, aren't you? I can understand wanting to be alone, I did too, but it's not really safe. I couldn't see from far away, but can you describe what's happening? I could help."

While he wasn't officially trained, he had studied under several doctors now and done his own research.

[Kaz can actually hear his stomach rumble. Louder than usual, ears far too keen. He salivates despite himself.]

[All new experiences, really, when encountering the smell of an average person. Even from this distance it's about the same as being trapped under a box with a particular someone, smelling his breath and those damned onions.]

I guess if they're out here, they have no choice.

Is it possible they came out armed?

[Which means they could be prepared for something like them. He knows if he had to go out into the woods full of potential opposition, he absolutely would be.]

Yeah.

[He tries his best to stand- it's difficult. Slippery dry sand under him, clumsy prosthetic, no crutch. But he doesn't want to be so prone on the beach while someone- something -that looks so reminiscent of someone that badly hurt him is speaking cryptically at him.]

I have no idea where the hell this is.

[His voice is still that same tired gravel that Liquid would have known in his youth. Back when he was the White Mamba, or Eli much against his will. Miller's even wearing the Diamond Dogs insignia on his beret.]

Is Cipher behind you, too? [If only he could quite connect the dots, except one really can't be blamed for perplexed reactions to Time Travel.]

[The wolf slows his saunter, shoulders that had been moving with rounded, muscular ease pausing and his ears perk forward. Nostrils flare (not threateningly, but he is smelling her).]

Wasn't planning on it.

[The limbs are still new to him, not only regrown with the transformation but so utterly bizarre in shape and motion it seems doubtful he'd be able to chase anyone down anyway. She doesn't smell like everyone else, though. Not like the other scents of people in the woods.]

[She's not exactly human, is she?]

What are you?

[Chloe freezes, giving a vaguely frustrated sigh. Maybe Max is right, but you know what? When you're trying real hard to just go with it and follow your instinct, it's way too easy to just blindly go.

She's gotta get better at that.]

Right ye are, captain.

[Her tone is sarcastic, but by the time she finishes she's having to fight a smile forming- luckily Max is behind her, so she can't really see it. Either way, Chloe turns around and starts heading in the direction of the town.

Can you tell she really doesn't want to stop and talk right now?]

[personal profile] warandpeace 2017-09-12 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
[His trenchcoat sleeve hangs loose around his right arm when he tries to move it, fabric pulling around where his bicep had been cut short. It's a reflex, trying to reach with a non-existent limb as he pulls himself to his "feet". One a prosthetic, barely functional on its own as it's basically a false foot attached by thin metal (betrayed in shape by the half-sea-salt-wet pants that cling to it).]

[He hates asking for help, or accepting it. But the man is... offering? Maybe? It's hard to tell.]

I don't know where I am.

I've gotta get to a phone. Anywhere off the beach.

[Kaz's tone is rough, general life exhaustion seeping into it as well as this... place.]

[Then there's that nasty word. One he hates using because it's usually attached to moments of weakness, memories he has contempt for.] Please.

[personal profile] saveyourserpent 2017-09-12 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Cipher? Ahaha, is it really not obvious?

[It's pretty obvious to Liquid it's Miller, but he's known him like this. This Miller's obviously picked up something on what he is, but it's a long stretch from the angry child he once was.]

No, I suppose it wouldn't be. It has been a long time, after all. Behind me... yes, unfortunately. With me? Certainly not.

[He lifts a hand to gesture to the sand.]

This is my beach. The entire peninsula itself is called Ryslig, not that a name's much help to anyone. Don't expect to be making it back to Mother Base anytime soon.

[It's weird... some part of her wants to cover as much as she could up - and she could, if she wanted to. Throw on a turtleneck sweater and she could hide most of her scales, maybe get a big hoodie with a hood big enough to throw over her horns... but she has to admit, they're kind of cool. For now, at least.

She's trying very hard not to think of what's going to happen down the line. She's refusing to acknowledge that just yet.]

Yeah? What are you in here for?

[The way she ended up here, she knows that this other guy could just be here by accident. She'd been meaning to start poking around this Fog God stuff, but to say that she meant to wind up in Dyster now would... kind of be a lie.]
tastyplasma: (pic#11500507)

[personal profile] tastyplasma 2017-09-12 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
[It's cool Chloe, Max is kind of the master about Not Talking About Shit, remember? She can totally not talk about shit if Chloe doesn't want to. So instead she'll just kind of... focus on moving her grip, so she's holding Chloe's hand instead of her wrist. T-This is okay, right?]

So we're switching titles now? Not sure if I'm ready to handle that kind of responsibility...

[Which is kind of funny considering the safety of their entire town is her responsibility right now. But joking or not, Chloe was always the captain, and Max was her First Mate. It seems weird to talk about it any other way.]
hellablue: (54)

[personal profile] hellablue 2017-09-12 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
[It's fine, it's fine.

Chloe even gives her hand a squeeze back, letting her know it's okay. It's all she can muster right now. What is going on? Where the hell are they? It's all a lot to take in. Maybe she's still just running on pure adrenaline from everything they'd been through.

She slows down after a second, so she seems a little more chill.]

No, I just have a lot on my mind. It's been years- you forget the stupid words and shit.

[Maybe stupid is a harsh word to use, but she's not exactly thinking everything through right now. She's really talented at making everything she says seem way worse than she intends it.]

[personal profile] holmesice 2017-09-12 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Mycroft, a bit coldly probably, didn't bother to ask him if he was truly all right. A shrug, and he kept going. His movements were ungainly and very clumsy, but it didn't take him that long at all, maybe a few more movements in, to figure a sort of slithering motion. He was grateful for the support, however, it helped him focus on his tail.

Something about the muscles closest to the ground pulling and pushing in a pattern. It was uncomfortable, a completey inhuman action that revolted him, but there was nothing else for it but to keep going.

Now he figures he probably should check on his assistance.

"Holding up?"

Chloe, I--

[She wants to apologize. Again. She'll say it over and over and over again until it sticks, but she's starting to realize that no matter how many times she say it, it won't really mean much. And she isn't mad at Chloe for that; she's mad at herself. Because there's really nobody else to blame, is there? She was the one that left Chloe's texts hanging, she was the one that was always making excuses...

She feels like shit, even years after their last string of texts. But she knows she deserves it.]

I get it. [She's not even going with "it's okay" because they're about as far from okay as can possibly be right now.] And we don't even have to talk about it or anything, if you don't want to. Just...

[She squeezes Chloe's hand.]

We have to stick together, okay?
hellablue: (53)

[personal profile] hellablue 2017-09-12 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, Max.

You really make it hard to stay mad.

It's not like she even is really mad, mad, deep inside. It's more that she just hasn't really been able to talk about it, to give her side of things- not in depth. They'd gotten too wrapped up in everything that was happening that it's not like they could have a heart-to-heart about it.

She lets out a quiet sigh]

Max-

[She squeezes back instinctively.]

Yeah. We do.

[Chloe hesitates, carefully deliberating her next words.]

We'll talk, just... let's focus on figuring out where the hell we are first. Water, food, shelter... then- we'll see.

[Because even then she can't bring herself to commit to that solidly.]

We're cool Max, don't let it eat you up.

[They're getting closer to the town, she really hopes they'll be able to find some water soon. Is her mouth dry from the sand, or the stress of dancing around a lot of things?]

[What are you in here for. She makes it sound like they're in prison. Appropriate, honestly.]

I was told to come. I heard a voice and I followed it. [It's better to be forthright than evasive, especially in such a unique situation where he might need all the help he can get.] Probably the Fog God's. I don't think I've gone crazy.

[Yet goes unspoken, but there's a very clear implication that the word is on the tip of his tongue as he regards her with a wry, somewhat self-deprecating little smile. Maybe he's not ready to bust out the jokes and can-do boy scout optimism just yet, but he can still make an effort to lighten up the mood and take that first step no matter how shaky it is. He is the adult here. Gotta set a good example.]

[What a sorry sight. He does look the worse for wear, there's no denying that. Of course it doesn't faze Medic one bit. He's reached the point in his career where amputations are quaint and routine compared to some of the other things he's witnessed; at the very least, this man still has half of each pair left, so as far as Medic's concerned, he's lucky. It would disappoint him to hear whining in spite of that good fortune, doubly so when missing limbs are so...inconsequential. They're so easy to replace it's ridiculous.

Besides, he's not one of those bleeding heart doctors, those sappy types who let their better judgment and character become clouded by sentiment. A combo of the above perspective followed by this is what allows him to take in the sight before him so candidly, as if there's nothing wrong with Kaz at all.]

This may surprise you, but— Neither do I! [He clicks his tongue, holding back a full chuckle as he leans down to match Kaz's unsteady level.] You'd think I'd be used to that by now, but every so often...

[Something like this happens and it leaves him breathless and spun around and totally excited. But! Business now, pleasure later.]

Try not to struggle so hard, Herr. It's not the end of the— Well. [And here come his hands, popping that personal space bubble without any shame or second thought as he helps steady Kaz, hauling him up with one arm wrapped around his back. His stance is very practiced, very formal. If that doesn't indicate where his strengths lie, the red cross patch on his uniform's arm will.] I'd say it isn't the end of the world, but I'm not sure if I should make that promise.

Probably. They've gotta know what's out here. Might even be hunting monsters.

[He pulls out his rifle from across his back, and crouches down. Doesn't do much considering his size, but it's a habit.]

It's a good thing Mycroft didn't ask if he was alright, because he was too busy trying not to get knocked out of the way to answer. He periodically called out "Whoops" or "Watch it" or "okay."

Waldo, panting, gave him a thumbs up. "'s good. You seem to be moving now." Which was a good thing because he knew for certain now he couldn't drag the snake man anywhere.

"I didn't get you with my claws, did I?"
