There's a being here called the "Fog God"; it's apparently in an ongoing conflict with another god, and has seen fit to drag us into it. And... well, despite the names, the gods here are nothing like those in our world. They're capable of quite a lot more, and some seem to be significantly more malicious.
The Fog God is the one responsible for bringing us here and changing us. Unfortunately, as you've been told, the effects are not purely physical.
