Rosa's conclusion was not an inaccurate one; he would have likely stood and taken any blows dealt his way, doing very little to actually defend himself against the impact. After all, it could easily have been argued that he deserved as much, and the fact that said blow never came was almost a surprise to him on some level. Almost.
