tophatted: (a true gentleman struggles)

[ Hershel continues his way up the tree in much the same way; he looks around, pulls at branches within his armspan, and pulls himself to the strongest one. He's glad to run into less problems then he might have expected, and he ascends a fair amount before Emily calls up to him. He looks down first at her, and then around, pressing his back against the tree's trunk to stabilize himself.

He scans the forest floor. The forest looks as unnaturally still as ever... and cementing this from such a height runs a strange shiver down the Professor's spine. He hasn't spent any great amount of time in forests, but he's quite certain they're not normally supposed to lie this still. Should there not, at the very least, be more animal life? He doesn't even see any animals or birds from his height. He looks down again, and tries to ignore the pit in his stomach as he realizes just how high he sits.

I'm afraid not, Miss Wyatt! [ He's glad to look up again, and once he wills himself steady, he grabs at a crevice between the thick and upreaching branches above his head. His hand hits dried-out sticks and leaves bundled together, but also something smooth, and a little moist--

He looks, and under his fingers, he sees a reddened bone that he is certain is too large to belong to any forest-dwelling creature.

The Professor inhales sharply and draws back, tipping the thing over and sending it falling.
