Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:
Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.
Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.
Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.
SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together.
SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.
SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.
[Washing up on a shoreline, unconscious? Not that far out of the realm of possibility. Sometimes things happen when you battle, and...if that were all, the most concerning part would be that she can't remember the battle that knocked her out in the ocean, which is a glaring red sign that it was something important that she needs to remember.
If that were all, of course. But it's not all, because this is not Hoenn. Sapphire knows Hoenn down to its foundations (literally), west to east, mountain top to sea basin, the plants that grow and the weather patterns that move over the island and the way the air and the soil smell. This is not Hoenn, because it's cold, and the air tastes like grime, and the streets are full of humans but, eerily, there is not a single Pokemon in sight.
This is the kind of situation that calls for immediate investigation. Sapphire is pretty sure that the pamphlets being pushed into her hands count as things to investigate, and she's pushing them into her bag as fast as she's being given them (and she's hearing all kinds of things about "monsters", which just doesn't make sense), but nobody seems to want to pay attention to the question she's trying to ask.]
-hey, 'scuse me-!
[They push and bustle and pat her on the head and shoo her away nervously. Sapphire is small and indignant, and she grabs any wrist or shirt she can.]
-hey, I'm lookin' fer my Pokemon! Have ya seen some lost Pokemon?
[Scenario two, Part 2]
[Sapphire Birch is not a girl to be daunted by the unhelpfulness of other humans. Taking things into her own hands has been her way for a very long time.
That's why there's a twelve-year-old girl perched on the church spire, hands to her mouth, yelling across town.]
PILO! PIIIILOOOOOOOOOO!! [Then she whistles, loud and piercing.] TORO! ROOOONOOOO!!
[Hearing people he knows from home isn't a new experience. If you've been in Ryslig as long as he has: you learn not to trust things at face value. If you do those things are bound to try and eat you. - Still, why would you try and lure people to a high vantage point where every monster and their brother can see you? What is this, amateur hour?]
Listen, I know you're hungry but that is not the best place to be standing- how do you even expect to catch me if you're all the way up there? You're going to be a snack rather than get one. I'm doing you a favor here. [You're being critiqued by a giant red sableye, how does that make you feel?]
[The voice is unmistakeably Ruby, and brings a rush of mixed worry and relief.
What Sapphire sees when she looks down at the street below, though, reverses the relief. At first, she's too confused to take stock of the situation. Her eyesight is good, and she doesn't just mistake what she sees - but under the clothes that are all one-of-a-kind Ruby, there is something red and oddly shaped, pointy-eared and....just pointy in general.
And then what he'd said with that familiar voice registers, and her jaw drops soundlessly. "I know you're hungry"? "Catch me"? What on...earth-]
Wh- [Her brow furrows. She leans forward, and yells back.] How many times will I hafta say it?! I ain't no Pokemon!
[She lets go of the spire and lets herself tumble, catching herself against the wall of the church and jumping off of it to land deftly on a lightpole. The bug-eyed stares of passersby go ignored, and Sapphire turns on Ruby, looking baffled, indignant, and...a bit rattled.]
[To this person's credit, that was a pretty spot on impression. If only this were like home- where he'd have the pokedex to tell how they have the powers that they do, so he can find a way to stop them. But. It's not that simple. He balks.]
Oh-ho and you actually know what a pokemon is too! Acting skills and the aipom acrobatics of the real thing! Ha-
.. Why else would you be up there looking like that? [Or looking down here like this? That's not exactly the look of someone who wants to kill you, you know. Ruby gives her a puzzled look, his ears flattening back ever so slightly.]
[It's like the secret base all over again, and he falls into the old steps quite easily- punctuated with a screech.]
How come you're always trying to grab me you bar- You're not turning into a monster?! Why..
[His hands are defensively placed on top of hers where she'd grabbed him. The realization makes him relax his grip a bit though. If it's the real thing - really really the real thing - then scratching wouldn't be a good idea. He hasn't filed down the tips of his claws in awhile.]
[No sooner does Sapphire grab the collar of his shirt (and has her hands grabbed in return) than she freezes and lets go, eyes widening in shock.]
...I-it's th' same material. [The same stuff he uses to make his outfits - she doesn't know what it's called, but seeing as he's used it on hers for the past year, she'd know it anywhere.
...He's red. He has scales. He has claws. (He's not pitching a fit about this.)]
[Well now he knows for sure that the pact he made with whoever was in that weirdo-arcade was a stupid idea. Protect from what? Save them from what? She's.still.here.]
Of course it is! I always use jersey for that. It's stretchy, and different blends are pretty versatile.
[He's babbling a bit, but really- where does he even start? He exhales through his nose.]
..Did anyone try to give you pamphlets with pictures of weird looking pokemon on them?
They did, I've got a whole bunch right here! [But she forgoes pulling them out in favor of maintaining her dumbstruck stare.] ...Ya can't be sayin' you turned into a Pokemon? [So what's with all the accusations towards her - but she's not in a joking mood, and this is serious. She reaches up and carefully pokes his shoulder spines with her gloveless hand, wide eyes somehow going even wider.]
[He shies away from her touch. It's bad enough that they're there to begin with. Being reminded by watching her fuss makes it worse.]
There's things that look like pokemon called 'animals' here, and then there's what people are calling monsters now- that's what those papers are about. When I got here there wasn't any papers to warn us. We had to figure it out on our own.
[8( That's not any less worrying. His reluctance to let her check him over makes something pang in her chest, low and dreadful. Whatever this is, it's bad. Like, end of last August bad. Not mid-September bad yet, but who knows where it's going.]
Hey...whaddaya mean, "when I got here"? [Her eyes drift back up to his face, careful and searching.]
[With some attention gotten, Sapphire lets him go and claps her hands apologetically.] But my Pokemon have gone missin'. If they've been wanderin' around, ya couldn't miss 'em - have ya seen any big Pokemon around?
...really, really not funny.] Hey, I'm serious! I got washed up on the beach or somethin' and they're missin' - I can show you the bandages they gave me at the hospital if ya don't believe me!

There is one way to find out its true identity, or at least whether or not it is who it roughly appears to be.
Sapphire takes off one glove and sticks it in her pocket, then crouches, jumps down, and rushes him, reaching out to grab the front of his shirt.]

What's so important about them, anyway?
