TEST DRIVE SEPTEMBER EDITION

TEST DRIVE
Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
  • We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
  • Ryslig's FAQ is located here, so please take a look if you have questions.
  • The reserve date is 9/26.
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
  • Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 6 coins by replying to potential character threads! You cannot use this to go over the bonus 20 coins per month total, but you can use it to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous people who had them saying they are lies, or pointing out good "jokes."

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...

SCENARIO THREE: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

SCENARIO FOUR (New):The claws, the fangs, the pangs of hunger - horrible as they all are, it's manageable given enough time and perseverance. Local monster hunters, though, not so much.

Maybe it started with a few wayward glances on the outskirts of town, critical stares and disapproving whispers, or just the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whatever it was, deserved or entirely unprovoked, you're being hunted: a handful of aggressive, well-armed humans doggedly chase your trail throughout city streets and out into the open, and if you're not careful (if you don't find help soon) you might wind up as the next trophy kill claim on one of those hunter's walls.

scenario i.

[ Although Nanami thought that the pamphlets would be rather useful now that she was in a new world, there was something... off about them. Or rather, there was something that she didn't exactly understand. Which is why she's reading through them nearly absentmindedly - yes, clearly if she can walk and play video games, she can read and walk too. It's genius!

Except no, it's not. But when she peeks up from her papers towards the nearest passerby after sifting through each page, all she can do is blink several times, opening her mouth for a second before closing it.

    Talking to strangers is hard.

    Let's try this again. ]

... Do you know what a "Bunnyipyip" is? [ Because she's not so sure. She's thinking that it might actually be some sort of bunny creature -- monster? -- but she doesn't want to be hasty and assume things. That would be bad. ]

scenario ii.

[ Getting lost? That's not a thing in Nanami's book. But now that she's in a new place where she's not exactly sure where to go, well... She's not going to be lost in here without a game plan! Sure, this world may not be a game, but that doesn't mean that she can't use her gaming skills to her advantage, especially in the woods. Which is the sole reason why she's here in the woods, pen and paper in hand. But what exactly is she doing with it?

It seems that she's drawing a map.

She seems to be taking her time with it too, making sure to mark each step with the walls, traps, and anything else she might find. Though she may not notice you while she's doing this... ]

[ Scoping out the arrivals in the hospital sure is fun! Kou enjoyed watching them as they wandered aimlessly and looked at the pamphlets with either utter confusion or horror. How can he not take the opportunity to make those faces look even worse?

Well, Nanami might be awkward, but Kou's a nice guy so he'll take time out of his day to actually give her some attention despite how most people are walking by her as if she's a ghost. ]

Heeey! You finally spoke! [ Kou chuckles and then flashes Nanami a grin. Okay, so maybe he should answer her question now, huh? ]

Hmm...

I may have heard of it! Did you read about it in one of those weird pamphlets? Show me, show me~.

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-09-26 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ That's fine. She doesn't really mind being ignored by the locals at all in the slightest, since she would probably be in the category of "Most Likely to Ignore Strangers" if that was something you could see in a high school yearbook. ]

...

[ Just give her a few seconds to come up with a viable reply. She's not good at this talking thing, you see. Especially when it's with someone she just met. ]

Here. [ She'll open it up to the page in question. There doesn't seem to be a picture in the article, but there's definitely an article about how to deal with Bunnyipyips. But nothing on what they actually are... ] So, do you know what they are?
koullars: (65)

[personal profile] koullars 2015-09-26 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ So Kou rudely just swipes the pamphlet out of Nanami's hand to inspect the article. He reads over it quickly with his eye, well pretends at least, he could honestly care less about the contents. ]

Huhh... What a boring article. There's no pictures?

[ Pictures are important! ]

Liiike, sure! Learning how to deal with it is important but how do we know how to identify one when the time comes. [ An exaggerated sigh leaves his lips and he drops the pamphlet to the floor. ] How useless!

Looks like you're out of luck. You might find a bunnyipyip in the forest but won't even know that's what it is... And it's going to eat you right up. Or drown you. Sucks to suck I guess?
8bytes: (pic#8395872)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-09-26 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm.

[ Humming to herself, she dips her head a little, mulling everything over. Is the article really useless if there isn't a description of what the creature is, or even pictures? ] I wonder...

[ She muses that aloud, almost under her breath as she picks the pamphlet from the floor. It's still useful! Just not for this topic, it seems. ]

Maybe there's someone else who knows what the creature is.

[ Emphasis on maybe. ]
koullars: (71)

[personal profile] koullars 2015-09-26 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Why are you picking up the pamphlet Nanami... It's useless. The best ones have pictures in them? Who actually reads these days... ]

Maybe? [ Kou shrugs. He decides to lean over and take a look at the pamphlet again, pointing out interesting marks of what other people may have scribbled on the article. ]

It says this article might be lying... [ Points to another mark. ] 'Do you really carrot all about this?'

Haha! Is that suppose to be a joke? I like it.
8bytes: (pic#8395871)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-09-26 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe.

[ That's her answer, it seems; she doesn't seem to hold any sense of urgency or affirmation towards her own statement. Not really, anyway... it doesn't seem to be that important. ]

But why would it be lying? [ What's the point, is what she seems to be asking. ]

ii!!

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-09-26 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ humans being lost in the woods is not an uncommon occurrence, followed with the fact that most of them don't usually make it back, having run into some starving monster here and there.

personally, he's more interested in whatever she's doodling out in the middle of the forest, and figuring out why in the forest, to begin with. although he tries to peer at the paper from far away, with her back turned towards him, the marks are too small for him to see.

so with no other way to sate his curiosity, he moves quietly until he's right behind her — and suddenly sets his hands on her shoulders. ]

Boo!

Don't worry, I'm not going to eat you. [ a laugh, and then he points at the paper. ] What are you drawing?

Ah...!

[ Nanami feigns surprise, if only because that's the proper response to someone saying "boo!" to her, right? Yes, clearly. Though it's not that hard for anybody to tell that she isn't actually surprised. Especially with her near monotonous voice.

She Tried. As for his question, she answers simply, ]
A map. I thought it would be useful in case I get lost.

[ when he looks closer, the markings are far more intricate than he'd thought, as if it could have been done by a professional, or just an incredibly dedicated, detail-oriented girl. ] In town, I bet someone would probably pay good money for this. It's not as if they just hand out maps of this forest.

[ but once he's stared at it for long enough, the parts of the map that've already been drawn begin to look familiar. having being here for a month means that while he doesn't know the entire forest like the back of his hand, for the most part... he generally knows what goes where. ]

You know, for your first time in these woods, that's a pretty accurate map. This path here... [ his fingertip hovers over the parchment as he speaks. ] ...turns like this, actually, but other than that, you're good so far.

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-09-26 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ LOOK, she's not called the Super High School Level Gamer for nothing. After all, she's dealt with Etridan Odyssey hell, and a bunch of other games that requires the player to draw their own maps, so this... while only slightly more difficult since she's doing it in reality, isn't too difficult for her.

So yes, she's dedicated. ]

Hm. I see. [ Thankfully, all the markings so far were done in pencil, so it's easier for her to adjust the map accordingly. Okay, there. That should be better. ] Has nobody made a map of the forest before?

[ Out of curiosity. If nobody has, then she might have to copy her findings for her friends. It might (read as: will) be important to them, since the forest might be dangerous... ]
gravesite: dns (huh)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-09-28 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he'll watch her make the adjustment with a pleased nod, scanning the rest of the page in interest, if not admiration, at how easy it is to read. take this from someone who's gotten lost in the forest far more than just once, possibly. ]

Not that I know of, but then again, I haven't checked — and even if they exist... you know what old maps made back in the day look like, don't you?

[ —frayed and yellow, the edges curling inwards from age. the markings left on it are usually faded out and nearly impossible to decipher. either way, her map is a great improvement above all the other maps, unprecedented in readability and detail!!

and, just to check: ]
You're going to finish this map, right?
8bytes: (pic#8349844)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-09-28 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
...

[ She hasn't seen old maps in real life, but she knows what they look like, based on old games that she's played. Thank you, horror games! ] I will.

Do you want a copy?
gravesite: dns (▶ hang my head about)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-09-29 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ and he'll instantly take her up on that offer, because he's about it! his housemates would thank him for it, too — especially someone in particular. ]

Sure, if you don't mind. Once you make a copy, I'll gladly take it.

From what I've seen... people who usually grow wings come to this forest to practice — like, for instance, this one guy I live with. But then they fall out of the sky, and then they don't know where they are.

That's why this kind of thing is useful, you know?
8bytes: (pic#8395871)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-09-29 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
... Okay. [ Duly noted! Both the fact that she will have to make another copy once she's done drawing the map of the area as well as the fact that people usually get lost once they grow wings. Hm. ]

Since you helped a little, you can get yours for free.
gravesite: dns (▶ as if we never had the time)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-09-30 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you're the best! [ +1 map, (to be) acquired!! but, he'll also point out something else, because who knows, she just might know who he's talking about... ] You know... you're a lot less weirded out about this than I thought you'd be.

There was this boy I saw earlier — pretty tall, pretty average-looking, had a piece of hair sticking out of his head that looked as if it could kill someone — anyway. He didn't look too pleased when he learned about the whole idea of eating people, but those are normal humans for you.
8bytes: (pic#8395871)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-10-01 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Really? [ Tilting her head to the side, Nanami just blinks at Kuninaga as if he said something absurd. She was absolutely certain that she had worn an expression that fit the situation. Guess not. ]

You met Hinata-kun? [ Because who else would have that description? ] His hair can't kill anybody, though. ...Probably.

[ Her voice sounds rather distant, as if none of it is any of her concern. Though now she's curious. Can hair really kill someone? Maybe she'll ask the person in question later. ] Mm, but eating other people isn't good.
Edited 2015-10-01 04:12 (UTC)
gravesite: dns (▶ there was an echo)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-10-01 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, that's the guy. [ because there's no one else whose hair can quite make an impression the way that hinata's can. he hopes that she'll find out for him, because it seems as if she recognizes who he's talking about. maybe he'll give her something in return, for that knowledge.

because if his hair can hurt people, then... attaching him to a long, wooden pole would make for a half-decent spear? stay tuned... ]

You'll have to do it one day, unless you want to starve. I mean, if you want to starve, go ahead. I have no problems with that — but, I personally don't recommend it. It's kind of painful.
8bytes: (pic#8349840)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-10-01 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...

[ Hearing those words just causes her to pout somewhat, knitting her brow a little bit. ]

Hm. I saw a pamphlet that gave alternatives. [ She nods to herself, seemingly affirming something to herself. ] So even if it's painful... I won't do it. I won't hurt people.
gravesite: dns (▶ i saw the thunder roll over black)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-10-01 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's assuming that all of those pamphlets are true — which, who knows? Do you think a place like this would tell you the truth, and nothing but the truth? [ still, he doesn't expect her to take his advice to heart; eating people isn't the easiest concept to get used to. ]

Plus, they aren't even humans that you'd recognize. [ and..... to put it in a way that he'd seen someone on the network say.... ]

They're renewable resources.
8bytes: (pic#8400925)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-10-01 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
...

[ And that's when her lips press together, a serious look reaching her eyes as she clutches her chest, fingers tightening around the fabric. ]

You've got that wrong. [ Somewhere out there, a protagonist sneezes from having his line quoted... ] Humans aren't like that.
gravesite: dns (▶ oh i would say)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-10-03 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ he blinks at the immediate contradiction, but while he's been alive for far longer, he can't say that he acknowledges the good side of humanity — not that he's ever been exposed to it, exactly. ]

Aren't they? [ a tilt of his head to the side accompanies that, curious to see how she'd word it. ]

Then, tell me — what are they like?
8bytes: (pic#8349836)

[personal profile] 8bytes 2015-10-03 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not. [ Unlike the last few times where she had paused before speaking, this answer is immediate. ]

People aren't renewable resources. Each and every person is an individual with their own life, their own purpose. They can't be grouped together like game consoles or cartridges. Because while those can be replaced, people can't be. You can't "fix" them once they're "broken".

And you can't make a new one, either. There isn't a single person that is exactly the same from the next. Even though there are good people and there are bad people, it doesn't mean that we should use them as a resource for personal gain. I want to trust in everybody. [ It may be a naive way of thinking, but that's the philosophy that she's run by since day one. She's not about to change that now. ]

... That's what I think.
gravesite: dns (▶ what's all the trouble)

[personal profile] gravesite 2015-10-04 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ throughout her entire speech, he listens quietly, despite the small gaps in his knowledge — what are consoles? what are cartridges? — because while he doesn't think much of the first half, it's the second half that he understands more than he wants to.

so he smiles, just a little. ]
You know, that way of thinking isn't bad.

[ he's actually a bit impressed! but then, there's also the reality of the situation. ] You'll get by like that for what, four months?

Ask anyone else that's been here long enough — that's about how long people last, without trying to eat humans. It's almost like we have to, after that point. What will you do? Eat people that are already dead?
