TEST DRIVE SEPTEMBER EDITION

TEST DRIVE
Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
  • We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
  • Ryslig's FAQ is located here, so please take a look if you have questions.
  • The reserve date is 9/26.
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
  • Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 6 coins by replying to potential character threads! You cannot use this to go over the bonus 20 coins per month total, but you can use it to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through. Some of these seem to have been passed down from one monster to the next.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others. Sometimes they have marks on them from previous people who had them saying they are lies, or pointing out good "jokes."

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...

SCENARIO THREE: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

SCENARIO FOUR (New):The claws, the fangs, the pangs of hunger - horrible as they all are, it's manageable given enough time and perseverance. Local monster hunters, though, not so much.

Maybe it started with a few wayward glances on the outskirts of town, critical stares and disapproving whispers, or just the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whatever it was, deserved or entirely unprovoked, you're being hunted: a handful of aggressive, well-armed humans doggedly chase your trail throughout city streets and out into the open, and if you're not careful (if you don't find help soon) you might wind up as the next trophy kill claim on one of those hunter's walls.

[ The first change that Shiemi notices are her eyes. Once bright green, the color has changed into a pale golden color that more resembles the color of her hair and the sight worries her. She tries to shakes off her worry and go about her days but more oddities start to emerge.

Voices that sound as though they are right next to her turn out to be across busy streets and shops. Reaching to help a fallen child up earns her a confused stare and a comment about how cold she feels, a coldness that Shiemi herself cannot feel. She avoids warmth from fire though, unable to shake off her unease and slight fear. Most of all, she realizes just how hungry she is and cannot bring herself to satisfy the sudden craving.

Perhaps coming into town was a mistake then.

Her stomach is a wreck of noises and she pulls the heavy cloak further around herself. It's a safety blanket more than anything but it helps to hide the bony protrusions that have have begun to appear along her neck and back. Most of all, the attached hood can help to hide her now sensitive eyes from the sun when it becomes too much. Still, the sun is nothing compared to the hunger she feels and passing by a bakery, she cannot help but stare longingly. Even though she wants nothing to do with the food on display, craving something far different, Shiemi wishes she could just eat this sort of thing again and be happy. It's only then that she's able to break away from thought of food long enough to realize someone is nearby, tapping on the glass and she looks over with a furrowed brow. In her ears, the sound is so loud that—
]

Yuki... ?

[ Shiemi says the name before really even thinking about it. Her gold eyes blinking, squinting in the sunlight and trying to make sure this wasn't some trick of the light. ]

[personal profile] unignited 2015-09-21 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
[Being called by name (or at least a nickname which works just as effectively) snaps him out of his utter focus on his lack of reflection, eyes snapping away from the glass to lock instead upon Shiemi--

Who shouldn't be here. Shouldn't be trapped in this horrible place as well, never mind changing into some monstrous creature the way she obviously was. Her beautiful green eyes were gone, replaced by a yellow they shouldn't be. He hadn't even known she'd been among the arrivals. Yukio gives a single owlish, almost poleaxed blink before likewise snapping out of that surprise.]

Shiemi! What-

[There's a kid playing peek-a-boo with his legs.

He needs to stop being so distracted in public. Carefully he works on extracting himself from the child, who seems to have decided this is even MORE entertaining as his own reflection winks in and out of existence in time to Yukio's movements, but it doesn't take long to get the little bugger off his leg.]

Pardon me, I really need to pay more attention to my surroundings, how long have you been here for??

[His smile is a little pained but no less genuine for it; Shiemi was both a terrible sight and a welcome one. She shouldn't have to be here at all, and yet he was pleased to see her anyway.

Just.. ignore the lack of reflection he has in the bakery glass, he doesn't understand it either.]

[ Her mouth opens, wishing to comment but her voice dies in her throat as she watches the child. She hadn't noticed him before and her eyes are fixated downwards, watching him as he plays, winking in and out of focus while she watches on confused. Lately, it seems like things have been so strange but this simply throws her off but... it's actually a nice change of pace watching Yukio struggle.

It gives her a chance to smile and one that sticks as she glances back up, pondering the question. It's something she's missed and she's grateful for the moment, grateful to have found Yukio and even though it worries her more there's an unmistakable sense of ease that settles over her.
]

It's been a little while now. A few days or a week... maybe a little more? [ But she's been so hungry, everything has blurred together and left her losing track of time as she tried to sleep the hunger pains away. ] It feels a lot longer.

[ Thankfully, that sort of change isn't as noticeable as most so she can happily ignore the lack of a reflection in turn. The less Shiemi dwells on these changes the better. ]

I should have paid more attention too though. I had no idea you were here but... I'm just glad that I found you, Yuki.

[personal profile] unignited 2015-09-21 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Really the kid should know better than to be playing with strangers. Around here, the stranger may well eat him. Perhaps eventually even Yukio would be that threat, once the blood-hunger set in. It hadn't yet, and he's more intent on seeing the kid off than doing any sort of harm. This isn't the time or place for games!

Granted when it's Yukio, there's rarely a time or place for games.

With the boy finally shooed off he can focus entirely on this instead, gaze scrutinizing, searching for other signs of change, anything that might pin down what this place was forcing her to become. He'd been told the pamphlets weren't entirely accurate, but it was better than nothing.

Unfortunately there's no choice but to dwell on it. Reunions are important ... knowing what sort of savage beast they were becoming was much moreso.]

I'm glad too, Shiemi. Your eyes look different. [Some of his smile fades; the instructor's still there after all, as is the worried friend.] Has anything else changed, do you know? Have you felt different at all?

[Possession is inevitably what his mind tries to insert even if he KNOWS it's not what's going on here. This world created its monsters in a very different way. But why did it have to be her?]

[ Shiemi watches as the kid is shooed away before a noticeable flinch goes through her when Yukio comments on her eyes. Carefully, she glances to her side and looks at the bakery window. Right, her eyes are more golden now and there isn't a trace of green left to be found. It's a small change compare to some but...

How much of her would still be the same when this was over? Would it ever be over?
]

I, um... my eyes are really sensitive now. It's really hard for me to be out here in the light because of it and it's making it harder for me to see clearly. [ Nervously, she folds her hands in front of her and squeezes. ] But I see a lot better in the dark. It could be pitch black and I can still tell what I'm doing.

[ What else... ] My hearing is better too. People whispering across a room sound like they're right beside me.

[ When it comes to how she feels, there is harder to answer and she doesn't want to tell her friend about how her stomach has twisted itself into knots with carving. She doesn't want him to know that her body wants nothing more than to rip the throat out of one of these people passing by. Instead, she swallows hard and pulls at the heavy cloak to show her neck and the odd bony protrusions beginning to appear at the base. ]

These showed up just recently. [ She says weakly, finally looking up and back at him. ] Are you okay? Your eyes are different too...

[personal profile] unignited 2015-09-21 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
[There's nobody standing beside her when she looks in the window. She doesn't comment on it and perhaps didn't notice, something he is suddenly and intensely grateful for. It was strangely important to remain some sort of stable, unchanging cornerstone.. but how long would that last?

He could get used to eyes the color of the noonday sun. He'd gotten used to Rin's tail and fire and alarming habits of throwing himself directly into the jaws of danger, how much more minor was this? But it shouldn't be happening. Poor Shiemi. She must be frightened, but she was good at brave faces too, wasn't she.]

We'll have to see about finding you some sunglasses then. I'm sure a shop around here will sell some.

[Light sensitivity, better night vision... and vastly improved hearing. He couldn't pin that to just any one species. The bony ridges she reluctantly shows him doesn't help either. Troll, perhaps? But those were stone, and this isn't rock. He reaches one hand as if to touch, then thinks better of it. She might not want her personal space so invaded with something as alarming as this going on.

Her return question draws a smile that's a touch distant and never quite reaches his eyes. There's no fangs either - not yet.]

Yes, I'm alright. I suppose we're both going to have different eyes then, mm?

[Maybe it'll be reassuring to her. He has no idea what had changed with his own, he couldn't see it. That he had no control over, and didn't want to ask about. What he could do, however, was something about Shiemi's problem. And the fact that the passing people were now giving them side-eyes.]

Let's see if we can find somewhere for sunglasses, then locate a good pharmacist or greenhouse. I've heard the later stages of all of this can be ... a little unpleasant, so it's probably a good idea to stock up now.

[It's deliberate. Yes things are going bad, but why not focus on things they both understood very well, such as plants! And preventative measures for pending unpleasantness!]

[personal profile] blushfully 2015-09-21 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Sunglasses are a really good idea. It'll be a lot easier to wear them instead of wearing a hood all the time.

[ Maybe if Shiemi's changes had given her antlers or brought about the death of her body then things might be easier to figure out. Though, if that was the case, her current secret wouldn't be so easy to hide away from Yukio. Either way, even she's not even completely sure just what she's becoming yet. Whatever it is, it's nothing good but... were any of them better than another?

Her eyes glance back to the window with a sigh. She figures it best not to comment on the fact. It was hard not to notice his lack of a reflection, after all but Shiemi figures that if he wants to say something then Yukio will say something. Perhaps. Her worry from home over him has not faded even now, standing close enough that she could reach out and touch him but there still feels like there is a chasm between filled with things she does not understand.

So she smiles and her eyes close for a moment, her own way of briefly resting her eyes from the light.
]

Yeah, I guess so even it's a little strange to look at myself now...

[ His words do help even though she wishes neither of them were having to go through this. Her attentions turns away from the window and to the passing crowd, feeling small under their gazes. Her own gaze falters, turning to the ground and she nods.

Right, they could both hurt people. She wants to hurt people so this could be a good thing. This is something to help and honestly? Plants are a great distraction for her.
]

Mm, okay... that does sound like a good idea. I'd like to try and be as best prepared as I can.

[Antlers would really cinch what she's becoming.. but yellow eyes and photophobia didn't, not even a little. That didn't prevent him from mulling it over, thinking of what he'd observed since arriving, found out from Rin or read in those questionable pamphlets.

It keeps him busy while he steers her away from the bakery and down the street, keeping an eye out for anywhere that looks like they might sell sunglasses. Pharmacies did usually, and as a bonus might have some other useful things!]

Don't think like that. You're still the same Shiemi, even if your eyes are a little different.

[Plus the bony plates..]

People might be afraid now, but they don't know you like I do. All they see is these .. changes. But that's not going to change everything.

[He knows, which might be why he sounds particularly confident of this fact. His brother might be a scorpion-tailed blue CAT right now, but he was still absolutely, undeniably Rin. Maybe it would help her to know that. Rin would certainly be both thrilled and alarmed to find out she was here.

It's always best to focus on the things they could change, instead of the ones they couldn't. Like becoming monsters. He has no idea about the wendigo hunger though..]

..Oh, here's some. Let's try here. It'll get us out of the sunlight a bit too.

[The door he diverts towards seems to be more of an 'accessories' shop for all MANNER of things, from keychains to teeshirts, but it did indeed have at least some sunglasses..]

[ She follows along without a fuss. In a way, it's good for her to keep moving and to focus on her friend alone. She knows she could never hurt him and it helps her block out everything else, it helps her to ignore the pain in her stomach and the settle the worry in her heart.

It's why she listens quietly and intently, glancing up to Yukio as they walk before her gaze falls forward again. Shiemi isn't sure what's going to happen to her, if all of this would get worse before it got better or if it would even get better but she had to hope, right?

She had to be strong like the weeds just like Kamiki has said.
]

You're right. [ She finally says, looking back up and nodding. ] It's going to be rough but we can figure something out and I'm sure it'll somehow work out. I shouldn't be so hard on myself either...

[ She smiles again but this time, it resembles her familiar smiles from home and she laughs. ] Thank you, Yuki.

[ And she truly does mean it. Still, her focus changes again as she steers them toward a store that is filled with all sorts of things like the tourist shops back in Inari. Shiemi is mostly just happy to be out of the sun, the store offering her eyes a chance to relax and adjust to the low light. Carefully, she lowers her hood and glances around with a little bit of wonderment.

Her focus is on the sunglasses though and slips on a pair, turning back to Yukio with another smile.
]

Yuki, look at these! [ Shiemi, no. Even if they are utterly cute. ]

[It's easier to not be concerned over what minor changes he'd experienced if he could focus on someone else's problems. Later on, when he was alone, he could worry about all of it as much as he wanted, but putting on a more confident bearing might be helpful to Shiemi ... and that's all the reason he really needed to do it.

The smile, and the laughter closer to the sound he preferred than anxiety and fear, made it worthwhile enough. Sooner or later he'd have to tell her Rin was there, and then he'd get out of the way, but until then he could pretend for a little while.]

Ah. I'm glad it helps. [That may be a brief flush of pink across his cheeks, but it's paler than usual even for him, as he turns away to suddenly take way more interest in a set of custom made Zippos than he ever has before.]

..do you think--[Yuki, look at these!

Immediately he cuts himself off, turning to see what it is she might have found, and for several moments just stares. They MAKE heart-shaped glasses? They look incredibly silly but there's no way in hell he's going to say so!

They were a bit cute, he supposed... After a few moments he allows himself a cautious smile.]

Those would work I suppose! Do you like them?
blushfully: (Default)

[personal profile] blushfully 2015-09-24 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
[ Needless to say, she is absolutely delighted by her find. Her smile growing as she turns, finding a reflective surface and glancing at how they look on her. How had she never seen these before? Really, it such a shame that she had never seen a pair back home.

Sunglasses weren't even something Shiemi wore but these were just too cute!

His question gets her question and she looks back to her reflection thoughtfully. They would work, sure but...
]

They're really cute. [ She says, pulling them downwards and peeking over the top of the rims at him. Again, Shiemi can't help but laugh now that she had begun to feel better. ] I should probably pick something more practical, huh?

[personal profile] unignited 2015-09-24 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Yes. Absolutely. Yukio is all about practicality.

Golden eyes really weren't that hard to get used to, he supposed. He might always miss the green, but it was still definitely Shiemi.]

You should pick whatever you like best, you're going to be the one wearing them after all.

[Which is diplomatic practicality right here ladies and gents. If she wanted to wear pink heart shaped sunglasses then he wasn't going to tell her no!]

Then again there's no reason to just get one pair, is there? [He gestures to the rack; there's probably even sillier ones if she looked for them.] If you remain photophobic you'll probably want more than a few so you don't get tired of the same thing all the time.

[He had a certain fondness for ordinary square framed ones himself.]
blushfully: (Default)

[personal profile] blushfully 2015-09-24 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's true... [ Carefully, she removes the heart shaped sunglasses and sets them nearby for safe keeping. Glancing back to the rack, there are certainly a lot to choose from with some standing out to her more than others. ] I guess it wouldn't hurt to get two pair for now. Just so I have options and in case I accidentally break a pair.

[ Because it was something that could happen. Besides, she thinks that maybe something more subdue would benefit her in the long run. There might be days were she wouldn't want to draw attention to herself in town and wherever else she might go. Honestly, she just hopes that it doesn't become so bad that she's utterly unable to be out in the sunlight. ]

They really have a lot to choose from though.

[ Shiemi vanishes behind the rack as she circles it and looks over all the different styles. Finally, she spots a pair and slides them on with a grin. Speaking of ordinary square framed ones... ]

We could even match!
