TEST DRIVE : MAY EDITION

TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to Ryslig's test drive meme! If you're considering apping here, this is where you can try your characters out in the game's setting. A few things to note:

  • You can only app ONE character per round so choose wisely.
  • We now have a Quick Game Facts that simplifies the basic information about the game. Good if you want to see what the game is at a glance!
  • Lots of people have asked good questions on the FAQ, so do take a look.
  • The reserve date has been announced (it was changed to the 30th to allow a maximum number of people compared to a Friday).
  • Test drive meme threads can be used for your roleplay sample!
  • NEW! Players with characters already in the game can earn up to a maximum of 3 coins by replying to potential character threads! You will need to have your normal 20 comment AC in the game. You cannot use this to go over the bonus 10 coins per month total, but you can use it if you are missing some threads to reach that coin total. Same rules as normal bonuses apply.

Sample scenarios:
SCENARIO ONE: So you've just arrived, fresh out of the hospital, and already the natives are trying to get on your good side. Offers of food, shelter and other luxuries in return for hoping you don't eat them. They even have some helpful pamphlets to share with you. "How To Deal With Changes", "Alternatives to Human Flesh", "What to Expect When You're Expecting (to turn into a monster)" are all great pamphlets. There's even some detailing certain monsters, and the changes they go through.

Among these however, are some... not so helpful ones. "Bunnyipyips And You", "Axe Thief Axehounds," and "So you're becoming a Fur Bearing Trout" among others.

SCENARIO TWO: You've become hopelessly lost in Lager Woods. Paths don't seem to lead where you remember them leading, and you feel as if you're going around in circles. Childlike giggling can be heard from no direction in particular. Suddenly, you stumble upon another character, who seems to be just as lost as you! Perhaps you can find a way out together. Or maybe they want you for lunch...

SCENARIO THREE: You've heard about the fog, but you've never seen it before. Now, the mist surrounds you. Barely able to see before you, you need to get home - and fast. It's far too dangerous in this situation.

SCENARIO FOUR: The time has come and you've found yourself becoming a monster. Is the change instant, or gradual? Are you familiar enough with monsters to know what's happening, or is it a complete shock? NOTE: Feel free to pick any monster type for this prompt, but note that you may not get the same one in game.

-CAVES TO TEMPTATION- welp. Have a 7 year old japanese kid orz

[Nearest passerby happens to be very very small, this time. Though certainly not fae-sized.

Actually, Reira looks rather alarmed at the fact that he's seemingly been addressed at all, and after jumping, does little more than cling to his sweater and swallow...Nodding nervously, despite not actually understanding much, if any, of what this man's even said.

What do fairies have to do with Chicago? ...What does pizza have to do with it? why did the hospital force him out the door in the first place??
]
windycitywizard: (I got this)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-29 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oops. Sorry for scaring you kiddo. Harry sometimes forgets he's a towering 6'9" monstrosity.]

Well, they've been pretty helpful in my work as a PI and Wizard for Hire. And at the price of a large pie every week or so, they're some of the best contract workers I've ever hired. [Harry smiles and lets out a quiet laugh, hoping to make himself seem at leas ta little less intimidating.]
soft_focus: (-bites lip-)

Reira's family is scary tall and I will never understand //why//

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-29 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[S'all good Harry, you're probably only slightly taller than his mother in heels. Reira's just afraid of everything short his own shadow really.

Smiles and laughs do, if anything, bring down intimidation levels for sure. Actually this particular smile and laugh makes him think of someone else who tried that tactic of reassurance...

they failed, but it's a point of familiarity, and that's all that matters.

For the most part though, he's just staring and blinking at 'wizard for hire'.
] ...

....niisama said those are just cards... [Given what translation shenanigans seem to be in effect around this place, Harry should realize exactly what that first word means; big bro told him monsters aren't real, alright, makes sense...]
windycitywizard: (Reading)

Re: Reira's family is scary tall and I will never understand //why//

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-29 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
["Just cards?" Well, Harry did remember that one game Billy and the Alphas talked him into playing...]

Eh? You mean like Magic: The Gathering? Well, I guess that's as real as they get for most people. [And he can't blame them. As rough as life can get when you're a part of the magical world, he can't blame anyone for staying ignorant of it, willfully or otherwise.]
soft_focus: (............no? D:)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-29 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[Magic the what now-- He looks more confused by that than the idea of them being any realer than cards, shaking his head remarkably slowly as a result.

How...how does someone not know? someone hasn't been filled in on that particular world difference.
]

...Duel monsters... [One hand fiddles with something in his pocket while he mutters that, likely searching for the deck he has in there.]
windycitywizard: (Default)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh... a different game, I guess?

[ on noticing the kid's figeting, a lightbulb goes off. The whole arrival experience had been hell on Harry, but at least he'd been through this kind of hell before. Maybe Uncle Dresden can help take his mind off things for a while.]

If it's anything like the one I know, it's probably a lot of fun, yeah? If you've got some cards you think you could teach me how to play?
soft_focus: (oAo)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-29 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah...

[Hmnn. Well, he pulls out his own deck--maybe 'yugioh' cards exist for Harry, maybe not, who knows, but that's basically what they are. Monsters, spells, traps...lots of camera themes in this one.]

...only one deck... [Awww c'mon kid, that's fine enough for this--]
windycitywizard: (Grinning)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Looks like there's a bench just over there. Making his way towards it, Harry motions for the little dude to follow.]

Well we could start with an explanation of the rules. I can try my luck with a few shops around here to get a deck of my own later.
soft_focus: (o0o)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh- ...He seems to actually brighten a little bit, even if he's yet to smile. that one takes a miracle really

The fact that he's following after to take a seat on the bench at least gives some hope to the situation, even if it'll turn out that no cards exist in this place.

Still! He'll sit, and once Harry's sitting, Reira will quietly look over his cards to set something up with them.
]
windycitywizard: (The Thinker)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, this is definitely in the same vein of card game. The backs of the cards even have a similar brown oval motif. The cards' art was definitely more cartoon-y than what he was used to, but he didn't hate it.]

So what should we start with, card types?
soft_focus: (:|)

-sobs- they didn't reveal the synchro one unfortunately (It was probably another earth one...)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... Mnh... [Yea...

He'll put down... Three different cards.
]

[Brown one first.] Monsters...

[Then green.] Spells...

[And lastly, the pink.] Traps... ...for the main deck...

[He puts down a black one, a purple one, and a silver one.]

Extra deck has...'Xyz'... 'Fusion'... ...and 'Synchro'...

[So those are your card types! Or at least the ones Reira runs. He can't well show you what he doesn't have.]
windycitywizard: (Reading)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Harry nods along as they're rattled off]

So the first two aren't too different from Magic then, and I'd guess traps are like spells with certain trigger conditions... You've definitely lost me with the "extra deck" though.

[You definitely haven't lost his interest though. He wasn't so good with complex rule sets these sorts of card games had, but they were still enjoyable once he finally got the hang of things.]
soft_focus: (:|)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Mnn... [Well, he can at least tell that...

First, the spells and traps. He nods.
] ...you have to set traps the turn before... [Thus the term trap, evidently.

Extra though.
] ...Extra deck... ...has monsters with special summons...

XYZ overlays leveled monsters... ...Fusions combine material monsters... ...Synchro tunes material monsters...
windycitywizard: (Incredulous)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Oooh, so that's what they're for. makes sense why they get to go in an "extra deck" instead of the main deck now.]

So they're for turning certain monsters into bigger badasses? I like it. [Harry was nothing if not a fan of the brute force approach after all.] What else is there that I'll need to know?
soft_focus: (oAo)

I...WILL PROBABLY HANDWAVE EXPLAINING HOW TURN PHASES WORK IF THAT'S COOL... 8'D

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ah...y...yea...

[Yea that's basically it. ...Now that's the basics.

Now he's pulling out enough of those 'first three' to fill ten spots--five monsters, five spells/traps. From there he takes the bit of the deck that's 'extra', and puts it on one side of the spells and traps... the other one on the other side... and from there blinks, making sure that the two 'unfilled' zones can still be seen.

From here, it's pointing and muttering, because there's a heck of a lot more.
] ...Five monster zones...for attack, [he starts, before turning one 'sideways'] or defense...

...Summoning defense means... [He flips the card face down.] It has to be set...

[There's a bit of a pause, before he quietly continues on.] ...Five spell and trap zones... [Ah-- he blinks, and then points to 'empty spot one'.] ...field spells here...

[No pendulum explanation for you. CONTINUING ON.]

Graveyard here...for destroyed and used cards...
windycitywizard: (Grinning)

Yep that is 200% okay by me! 0u0

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
[With each point Harry makes a subtle grunt of affirmation to show he's following. He was pleasantly surprised at all the parallel concepts, since they meant learning this new set of rules wasn't half as much of a headache.

All the same, it's a hell of a complex game.
]

Man, you kids these days are pretty brilliant, you know that? When I was your age I thought I was a big deal for learning how to play baseball.
soft_focus: (:|)

yaaaaaay- I mean I'll link it but yea I -still- barely understand phase rulings orz

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
... [No real response other than to blink and stare at the cards at that. One would think a kid would look a little more proud--oh well.]

...Players start with...4000 points... ...First to 0 loses; through attack... [He points at the monster,] ...or effect... [And then to the spells and traps.]
windycitywizard: (Default)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh right. There is one thing missing here that leaves him a little confused.]

What do you have to do to play the cards in your hand? Magic had... land or something that gave you resources and every other card had a cost based on those.
soft_focus: (-bites lip-)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Blink. A cost? There's a twitch of a frown for that, but instead of shaking his head he just points to the stars on 'CC One-Eyed Past Eye'.]

...Player's turn has one 'normal summon'...any number of special summons...

...Level 4 and down is no cost... [This card has three, so that's obviously a fine one.] 5 and 6 needs one tribute...

7 and up need two... [...Unless.] ...unless it says different, [He mutters, swallowing. That one's important after all. Plenty of special summons out there.]
windycitywizard: (Incognito)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotcha, gotcha. That's the one thing that trips me up every now and then, having to follow the special rules certain cards have spelled out on them.

[man, this explanation is starting to take up a lot of space on the bench though.]

You hungry? God knows if anyone around here has heard of them but I could really go for a cheeseburger right now. Plus some place with a table would give us a little more room to work with.

[That might kill two birds with one stone: apologizing to his own stomach for putting up with days of hospital food, and some of the old comfort food grease, carbs, and protein combo to help this kid relax a bit more.]
soft_focus: (oAo)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Food?

His stomach answers for them--quietly, mind, but it's enough of a tiny little growl to notice. Last thing he ate was a half of a tuna sandwhich after all, and that was ages ago.

There's a point to be made about the cards too--so he carefully, one by one puts them back in the deck, pocketing it and standing up from the bench.

Guess that's his answer then!
]
windycitywizard: (I sure hope it works)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Heh. Man, why couldn't more people be as honest as kids were? It'd probably make the world a much better place.]

I think that's a resounding yes. Alright Short Round. [He promises it's all in the height and the ball cap] Let's go. And fingers crossed that chilled monkey brains isn't considered a local delicacy.
soft_focus: (............no? D:)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Or at least as honest as this kid in particular--though maybe not as quiet, that's just asking for disastrous misunderstandings for sure.

They can be ball-cap buddies. Maybe. It's worth a shot--for now he just stares briefly at the sound of 'chilled monkey brains'; considering his expression this is a hope that he is very much sharing!

But hey, he'll follow you. surely the towns people will provide the food in this case, if at least to keep themselves off menu
]
windycitywizard: (The Thinker)

[personal profile] windycitywizard 2015-05-30 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[He laughs and makes an apologetic grin from that startled reaction]

Sorry, movie reference. I really doubt there's anywhere around here that would actually serve something like that, even with the whole Adams Family vibe that permeates this place.

It's definitely got its bright points... I can actually get within 20ft of a TV without hexing it into a smouldering mess. [The last time he could do that he was about your age.]
soft_focus: (o0o)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2015-05-30 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah... [Oh. Definitely not something he's familiar with then, so he'll look ahead once more.

...Maybe stare up again with the hexing comment. It's probably going to take him a bit to completely grasp the idea of 'real wizards'.

...At least he nodded a bit though.
